And no disrespect to Mantle. But I’m very educated on the topic. To hit a ball that far naturally is very unlikely. You’d have to generate immense force. Which would make even more sense that a teammate may have found out and also taken part, and hit an uncharacteristically high # of home runs (61). Not saying for sure, but would def make sense. I have seen online speculations he did get heavier and start hitting the ball further… but it’s all just rumors since there was no records.
@philviz90123 ай бұрын
Mathematically at 200lbs swinging a 32oz bat he’d have had to generate 85mph bat speed and have an exit velocity of 120mph+ with older balls and bats and a slower pitch. For comparison Stanton is 6’6 (leverage) swings a 32oz 80mph with an exit velocity of 120mph and has never hit a ball 550ft….

We really dont know how balls he hit in his career that went over 400 feet that were also outs, but you also have to realize that it was 296 ft down the right field line and 301 ft down the left field line in the old Yankee Stadium so its hard to believe that he would 900 in today's ballparks.

@@metaphoria3 I don't believe there is a doubt about that. Mantle continuously had more shear power than any other ballplayer I've ever seen. The ballparks back in the 1950's were humongous. In the modern era the best pure hitter combining BA, home runs, RBIs was Ted Williams. No telling how many more HRs he would have had absent his service to our country. Mantle was the most fearsome power hitter I ever saw, and of course he had great speed and was an excellent fielder. Many people forget that early in his career, before his knees were messed up, he would beat out bunts to 1st base. Other players like Aaron and Mays had more consistently great careers than Mantle due to his injuries and his drinking. But the spectacle of him hitting a massive home run was almost draw dropping. I've seen other players hit those types of homers, like McGwire, Jackson and a few others, but I still think the Mick was in a class by himself for unbridled monster homers.

The New York Daily News on its back page featured the home run Mickey hit left handed that hit the top of the facade in right field showing a graphic that estimated the distance at 603 feet (if I am not mistaken or 604 ft.). Everybody that I ever heard talk about it said it was still rising when it hit the top with a loud boom about a foot from the top of the facade. Yet Mickey was not much bigger than Bret Gardner...but he swung with ALL his might, not just swinging hard with upper body as players do today. Mick drove into the ball with his legs and butt muscles too... The only player I ever saw to swing as hard as Mickey was Reggie Jackson who hit that wind-aided homer in the All Star Game in Detroit that hit off the transformer on top of the roof in Detroit. I give Ruth the nod as the greatest ever because he would've been a HOFer as a pitcher in addition to his unreal batting stats but after Ruth nobody had the talent of Mantle. As a White Sox fan I've listened to Hawk Harrelson talk ad nauseum about how talented the man was. Funny thing is when I ask people who saw him play they all say Hawk was right. Mickey was the greatest they ever saw. Hawk told a story about during the last year at the old Yankee Stadium people were oohing and aahing during the home run derby because guys were hitting HRs up near some area of the stadium (can't remember what he called it). He said Mickey did that on an almost daily basis against live pitching. The man was essentially the most skilled player you could ever imagine with Bo Jackson like athleticism. Like a better version of Mike Trout. I mean think about how good Trout is and even he would likely be considered a poor man's Mantle. That's no disrespect to Trout as he is on a path to end up as an all-time great. Anytime you are in the discussion with Mantle that's an instant tip of the cap. That's how great Trout is but Mantle is an almost mythical player.

WPIX New York Channe 11 broadcast that game. I was watching it. And I attest that the ball was still rising when it hit 104 feet the tin facade with a loud boom. That was set back about 20' feet behind the 344' sign on the right field wall, so about 370' away from home plate it struck metal 104 feet above the ground. The back page of the New York Daily News the next day had the projected distance as 604 feet as I recall. Just like seeing a UFO or a Bigfoot Sasquatch you remember something that is far beyond the bounds of NORMAL.

Incredible that someone from that long ago could set a record. If it was a record, and I’m sure it was. They say back until around 70s early 80s that baseball players and most professional sports players were different. Primarily because the salaries they received weren’t really enough to live off of comfortably. So they didn’t have all that off time to work out and train. They usually had a blue-collar job went out of season. not sure exactly the date or the numbers. But that’s a big reason why football players especially are so much bigger and faster nowadays.

How far did the ball that hit the facade in 1963 actually go? That can be measured. Take the distance from home plate to the fence directly under the facade where it was struck by the ball and then add the distance the ball rebounded onto the playing field. The ball struck the facade above the 360 foot sign in tight field. It then rebounded back onto the field and landed about half way to home plate. That adds another 180 feet. Adding together, that comes to 540 feet. Of course, the ball would have travelled farther had it not hit the facade because the facade absorbed some of the energy from the ball. But I think we can say with some degree of accuracy that the ball actually travelled around 540 feet.

@MrMakemyday36 жыл бұрын
what year? he had that hip abscess at the end of the 61 season
@jimallen85 жыл бұрын
I believe you are thinking of the '61 WS against the Reds. Mantle had an abscess on his hip from a bad needle for a shot he was given to kill a flu bug he had near the end of the '61 season. The abscess was cut out and stitched up, then broke open when he was running down the line. . There was another game during the '62 season when he was running down the first base line and one of his legs seized from a torn muscle in his thigh. He went down as if he was shot. . I was at the game in '63 at Memorial Stadium in Baltimore when Brooks Robinson hit a drive to straight away center. Mantle raced back, leapt for the ball at the fence, tangled his cleats in the chain link fence on the way down, breaking his foot. Robinson got a homerun. Mantle was subsequently diagnosed with torn cartilage in his knee as well. He didn't play for eight weeks until the Yanks returned to Baltimore. I was at the game, Yanks losing by two runs. They had a man on. Ralph Houk called Mantle up to pinch hit. The first pitch, he hit a homerun. As he rounded the bases the Oriole fans - notorius Yankee haters , gave him a standing ovation . . One of the most dramatic moments in sports I have witnessed. .

Tony Kubek was the one who claimed the ball was still rising when it hit the facade in 1963. He's been quoted often and the story has been passed along as folk lore ever since. But know one actually knows if it was true or just Kubek's perception of it. Science has disclaimed it. But it was a h@ll of a blast.
@mortimerzilch94373 жыл бұрын
Science disclaimed the curve ball too until Early Wynn hit a sports journalist who was standing behind a tree. Science still disputes the rising fastball. But if a baseball can curve 17 inches why can't it rise two or three???
@howie97513 жыл бұрын
@@mortimerzilch9437 Actually the curve ball was proved in 1898 when three posts were set up from the pitcher's mound, halfway to the plate and the plate. The ball was thrown on the right side of the two posts and the catcher caught it on the left (his right) side of the plate post. It was photographed too. Unfortunately the book I had with the article and pictures was destroyed. As for Mantle's HR, I myself don't know. But it was only Kubek who said the ball was rising when it hit the facade and the story was repeated by others as fact. Several articles have been written saying it would have been impossilbe and you can look them up if you want. Myself as I said couldn't say one way or another. Thanks.

Kubek, years later as a broadcaster, saw Mantle hit a long one in an old-timers game at the original Atlanta Fulton County stadium. He said Mantle would have hit a thousand homers there.
