Thanks Wayne just took apart a 1989 0MC small barrel. Made a jig for our auto engine stand so we can turn it any way we desire. We made the oil drain air injection part by drilling a grade 5 -3/8" bolt then tapped the carrier holes 5/16th " used teflon tape dope around the head of the 5/16ths bolt heads to hold in the socket. For that tap we used a lavatory and hosebib fourway key and ground off the large T parts glued the tap in the smaller of the small ends and the other just fit a 1/4" ratchet drive with short extension. Put the washer and prop nut on to catch the carrier a plumbing compression test plug on top to plug that off put air to it and pop it came right out.

Update: I was skeptical, but desperate, so I made the air adapter tightened everything up, and started putting air to the lower unit to check for leaks. I'm not sure how much pressure I put on it, but it popped out and went airborne about 3 ft. Never got a chance to heat the case or put the puller on it. I really appreciate this video; just sub'd. You're the man!

I did this with the drive on the boat, tilted all the way up. I loosened the four bolts all the way but left them loose in the holes. Just that was a good enough air seal to pop it. I shot compressed air into the drain hole with a rubber tipped air nozzle. Easy peasy. Thanks for the video.

Wayne, you SIR are a GENIUS! On my own I would have NEVER thought to apply high pressure air on the back side through the oil inlet port. I am thoroughly IMPRESSED! Wow!

Good info ! I've been chomping at the bit to get through the end of the video, as I didn't want to miss any important steps. I'm about to go try it on my 2007 150 hp Etec. Fortunately my carrier is the two bolt. The manual states the carrier on the M2 model, which I have, is pressed in and more difficult to remove. I already snapped a threaded rod using the puller, and that was with heat. So I guess I'll soak it with liquid wrench, put some tension on the puller, heat the case, and then add some air..."here I go, hold my beer...can't stop me now, lol."

Thanks for the videos Wayne. Assuming the lower bearing carrier disc area is about 3 to 4 inches diameter, you're going to get 7 to 12 times (πr²) the air pressure, so 420 to 720 lbs (at 60 psi) force pushing out on the bearing carrier.

man that's awesome info. I am in process of taking bearing carrier off my 2009 200hp etec. 2.6 liter. non HO. I finally got wedge retainer out. I going to use the air pressure method. of course I don't have the 4 internal locking bolts.

Also enjoyed the video immensely (despite the lack of editing 😊) and shared it with ‘Dangar Stu’ as I thought he’d appreciate it! Any videos of elegantly removing the AL ring in front of the carrier? I’m wrestling with that step and will be buying a new ring nut for my Yamaha o/b

I was amazed at how PERFECT this worked!!! Thank you for sharing this method. I must admit I was sure mine was frozen so I put the regulator to 70lbs...POP! I think it would have flown across the room if it wasn’t for my thumb being in the way resting in the prop shaft. (Do be careful folks cause this thing literally popped off with the full force of the air pressure) I have a Mercury 115 and the was, again, a perfect way to get the carrier off. Woohoo! Thank you.

That was a great way for the removal with not having the puller.I found out just recently gear oil leaking from prop shaft upon checking it out of course bearing was leaking, but noticed bearing carrier top area had a chunk missing and the edge of the bearing was exposed and that's where the leak was should the carrier be replaced or can I use a sealant once I replace the bearings? I bought this boat used it's a 1991

Hi Wayne, took the lower unit in the basement to replace seals/o rings/gaskets over the winter (getting water in the oil) and pulled out the bearing carrier with a standard gear puller and a piece of wire wrapted around it.Came out very easy-no air/heat. From what I've seen in your videos they're harder to get out, should this be a concern, or shut up and be happy??

how tight are those 4 bolts tightened? are there any seals on the bolts?

Ok dumb question but why not first try taken the 4 bolts out and put Teflon tape on them and not screw them in very far and then hit with air??? Then if that does not work try tapping?

The easiest way to do this is with a 2 x 4 over the shaft and a ratchet strap ran through the sides of the bearing

How do you get the snap rings out behind the barring carrier

There is a special set of snap ring pliers you have to order that are about 2 ft long.. Also the easiest way to remove a carrier bearing is To put ratchet strap through and then put a small 2 x 4 over the shaft and ratchet it out
