This is such a cerebral work as well as being emotional. The amazing thematic development in this is equal to any of Tchaikovsky's symphonies. It isn't often performed because it's extremely difficult technically, and, if you notice, there are not multiple lines but multiple textures, which makes the work very thick and undulating in places. It is truly Tchaikovsky's best overture in my opinion.
@RafaFernandezMahler9 жыл бұрын
It is a little-known work by Tchaikovsky, and I don't understand why, due to the fact that, in my honestly opinion, it is simply a masterpiece. That work represent by a outstanding way the agony, the pain, the tension and the beauty of the Shakespeare's play. This work is unfairly underrated and forgotten, but it isn't an inconvenient to enjoy this superb composition. Tchaikovsky is my favourite composer of every time...

+Rafa Fernández Agree, together with Manfred Symphony
@TheVaughan59 жыл бұрын
+Rafa Fernández You are right, it deserves to be heard more often but even more neglected is the magnificent "Tempest" overture. Both these works are as good as "Romeo & Juliet", if not better, it's only the ridiculous cachet of the name that gives it precedence over the other two works.
@raptorjesus69538 жыл бұрын
alwt1991 Notice the heavy similarity between the openings of this and the Manfred-Symphony. Most probably done on purpose to represent the likelihood of these two tragic heroes.
@fredrickroll064 жыл бұрын
@@raptorjesus6953 Tchaikovsky actually made a note to himself while sketching the beginning, "Do something to make it sound less like 'Manfred!' I suppose that Byron, while writing his "Manfred," was inspired by "Hamlet," among many other masterpieces

An underrated masterpiece. This piece made me fall in love with Tchaikovsky, along with Op. 66. And how like it it is, with all the ingenious thematic development, bizarre changes in pulse, and epic orchestration one could only imagine.

A work that should be performed more often. Romeo and Juliet is a masterpiece and the great love theme has made it one of Tchaikovsky's most popular works but this Overture, although undeniably exciting and dramatic, lacks the former works melodic inspiration. I am a Tchaikovsky addict and love all his music.
@TheVaughan513 жыл бұрын
This has always been my favourite overture by Tchaikovsky, I grew up with the Lorin Maazel/VPO recording which I love but this is every bit as good, Gergiev and the L.S.O. at their best and they don;t come any better.

Valery Gergiev can sometimes disappoint when he pulls the tempi around in certain performances but when he's on top form as here, he is unbeatable, especially in Russian music. The L.S.O. play as if their lives depend on it and the results are amazing!

I didn't know this Tchaikovsky piece. It's really brilliant and the video and sound quality are excellent. Thanks for posting this. If you listen to carefully at 6:53, the oboe is playing a theme that Vladimir Kosma probably ripped off to compose "Autumn Leaves" (Les feuilles mortes). This same theme comes back with strings behind at 11:29. Not doubt that Kosma had a solid knowledge about Russian classical and romantic music; then he could pick up themes here and there...

I take this association with a grain of salt, but it's certainly interesting.

Yes, thank you. Am in London so it's often a great privilege indeed to hear Russian musicians play too when they come - they live the conflict and sadness and don't dismiss it like many British people here may do -that is also another world -

The BBC engineers manage to get a fantastic sound quality considering the difficult acoustic of the Albert Hall. It's ridiculous to think that the L.S.O., one of the world's top orchestras, does not have an acoustically decent hall for it's home (Barbican Hall) like those of Boston, Vienna, Amsterdam, Paris and Berlin.

The conductor whipped them all together - without him, practice would probably have been a lot more chaotic! There's no reason why he shouldn't stay on to direct the final performance. Mind you, you may be interested in the conductorless orchestras - they once existed in Soviet Russia, I think?
@elainebmack12 жыл бұрын
Don't be so critical of kochos777. The role of the conductor is not so obvious to a person in the audience. All kochos777 needs is a brief explanation of what a conductor does, not heavy condescending remarks.

Произведение ни о чем! Это понимал и сам Чайковский. После прослушивания на репетиции, воцарилась тишина. Автор сам понял, что его пьеса не удалась, как и большинство других. Он выполнял не творческую задачу, а техническую написано без вдохновения.
