Tchaikovsky - Nutcracker "Pas de deux" - piano, arr. M. Pletnev - performed by Luke Faulkner - 4K

My favourite piece to play and appropriate for the festive season, Pletnev's transcription of the "Pas de deux" from Tchaikovsky's Nutcracker combines exquisite music with masterly piano writing.
When playing it, you get a strong sense of the orchestra that the piano is trying to illustrate: harps at the outset, woodwind dialogue in the central section, sweeping string melodies omnipresent, and rapid flute scales embellishing the zenith. Playing this is about as close as I've ever come to being a conductor! Credit must go to Mikhail Pletnev, a true virtuoso, whose transcriptions are a treasure trove for pianists and enthusiasts alike.

As i was a child, my mother took me to the presentation of Nutcracker by Mariinski Balet in Moscow. While hearing the first time this Master Piece i was not able to stop crying because the emotional feeling and the indescrabable energy of the melody overwhelmed me - and this at age of 6. I have a similar story. For me, it was my Grandma, and she'd take my sister and I every year to the ballet. I don't remember how young I was, but I was very young, and I cried as well. I couldn't believe the surge of emotion, it was so intense. This piece has engraved a place on my heart. and I shall never forget it. I still cry.

Beautiful job. Those were interesting artistic choices regarding the final bars of the piece. I’ve heard this performed live 1000s of times, with full orchestra as well as solo piano, but I’ve never heard an interpretation that ended on a decrescendo.

So very beautifully performed! I know that Tchaikovsky wrote this upon hearing the news that his beloved sister had passed away. He expressed so many sentiments/emotions in this very mournful, haunting and most beautiful musical piece.
