Tchaikovsky Piano Concerto No1 by Mikhail Pletnev (One of the best renditions)

Mikhail Pletnev's performance of this concerto in 1991 has something I can't describe that stands out from all the other versions I've listened to, I can also enjoy other versions, but I always come back to this one.

I have to admit that this is probably the pinnacle of recordings of this concerto, the Steinway sound is divine and the orchestra and pianist are in perfect balance.. this is music from heaven

Grigory Sokolov has More colorful beautiful piano sound than Pletnev! Grigory Sokolov his rhythmic vitalness is unbeatable! Sokolov is the Giant of Piano! What a performance! Earlier this year I attended a Russian National Orchestra concert which Mikhail Pletnev conducted. The program included a Prokofiev symphony and the Chopin Piano Concerto No 1 with the young George Li as soloist who was very good.

A performance of real individuality and style. The numerous 'interpretive touches' are fascinating in their spontaneity and the main cadenza of the first movement is like an improvisation. Pletnev's technique is effortless and gives him the ability to respond to the inspiration of the moment. Tchaikovsky's great work sounds fresh and new. Frederic, you are right. Not an easy piece to pull off. The piece must have power and grandness, but suffers if it is overblown. Pletnev brings a lightness, almost Chopinisque, and virtuosity.

This was recorded in 1991 as part of the Tchaikovsky Cycle by Vladimir Fedoseyev and the Moscow Radio Symphony Orchestra, and the cycle was one of the last things credited to that name; in late 1991, the orchestra changed its name to the Tchaikovsky Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Fedoseyev was with the orchestra from 1974 to 1999 and again from 2006 to the present.

Tremendous performance, all the more impressive when you can see Pletnev's ease of execution. Of course it's not the best. The music is far too great for a single "best" performance to exist at all. Variety of interpretation is what matters, and this concerto has generated quite a range. It is stupid to listen to 30 recordings and compare them bar by bar. It is equally stupid to limit yourself to a single performance, no matter how great. But this one by Pletnev is one of the very few certainly worth returning to regularly. Fine conducting by Fedoseyev, too.

I have my opinions, and I *personally* think Argerich is better in *almost* every aspect, the musicality (dynamics), the tempo (rubatos), and the precision and speed. So, I would have to disagree with you. But, this all is my opinion, since I cannot do any better then Pletnev. Check Argerich's version on KZbin for yourself and compare it to Pletnev's version. Let me know your opinion. (No offense intended against you or Pletnev)

I was trying to see what piano Pletnev is playing here. It's Steinway. He is not fooling around with a Shigeru-Kawaii piano as he did at his recent concert in Seoul, Korea. Daniil Trifonof was fooling around with a Fazioli piano. I just don't see the point in playing other than Steinway piano.
