Breathtaking. So passionately russian. P.I.T. is the most significant composer, who represents classic music in it's russian profile.

Volodin gives us a straightforward, no-nonsense and technically pristine performance of this old chestnut that somehow sounds like a world premiere, so electrifying is the excitement he generates. I've heard this played by just about every pianist here on KZbin and then some and somehow I still got goose-bumps for the first time in years just listening to the closing of the first movement. Trist me, those closing octaves will leave you breathless. Volodin reminds me a lot of Russell Crowe here, not that that should matter. Notice how he snaps his wrists back quite a bit after striking the keyboard. I wonder if that is a technique he was taught to give the chords more crispness. All in all, one of the most exceptional performances here on KZbin. Beats out the Kissin/Karajan but I think that's Karajan's fault. If you watch Karajan closely you'll notice he hardly ever looks at his young soloist, like he couldn't give a damn about Kissin and expects Kissin to follow HIS tempos. Power has privileges. Oh, and the overhead camera angles of Volodin are spectacular.

Dazzling! This is one of the most electrifying performances I've ever heard. For me, the piano was a little too up front but that's a minor problem. Both performers are at the top of their game here and it's wonderful to hear. We all have a our favoured performances and artists, but may I just remind everyone that the true master behind all this magnificent music is Pyoty Ilyich Tchaikovsky! We can all debate about the merits of any performance but nobody can seriously doubt the genius of this most wonderfully open-hearted of composers, whom I love beyond all others. I giant of a man and a seminal composer. Three cheers for Tchaikovsky...!

Very impressive. The orchestra sounds so lush and pianist is on full power. He was a judge at a Tchaikovsky piano competition.

as opposed to "too" slow?

I think its a good tempo, its better a little too slow than too fast, otherwise the music loses a lot of its meaning
