Wonderful performance and unique interpretation! By unique I mean this march started much slower (ans softer, as if from a distance) than many other interpretations I am familiar with, but then it built up momentum and quickened the tempo. Yet the faster tempo now also shifted from time to time, seeming to reflect the marchers actual shifts of steps and movements. By the way, someone already mentioned the Imperial Russian Anthem that Tchaikovsky excerpted here. He also used it in other pieces, such as the one commemorating the Imperial Coronation and, of course the "1812" overture. Notice also how he imitated the heavy roles that clarinets and trumpets play in most military bands. Bravo!

The original name was Serbian-Russian march,but because of political reasons the name was changed.The march is deticaded to serbian and russian soldiers who fought in Serbo- Turkish war in 1800-is.The original composition is stored in some museum in Moscow,i cant rember which.

"Slave" is a French word, not English. Means "Slavic/Savonic" and it doesn't resemble the French word for "slave" at all. The origin of the word "Slavic" is in the word "slava/слава" which means "glory" in many Slavic languages. In any case, the only original name this piece has is in Russian and it's Сербско-русский марш (Serbo-Russian march) and it honors the friendship between two countries and Russians helping Serbs during the war with Turks and afterwards. Exotic-sounding motives are from Serbian folk music. Russian Imperial hymn "God, Save the Tsar" hints on Russian Empire. Reading discussions about slaves under this video makes one's eyes bleed and one's heart despair.

In Serbia we don't use word 'Slavyani' (slava/glory) for Slavic people, but 'Sloveni'. Because 'sloviti' means 'to speak' (the same language). So Sloveni are the group of people who speak the same language(or similar). I think that is a more precise explanation

Indeed, the composition was chosen by the melody of the Russian anthem "God, Guard the Tzar" and three Serbian folk songs: "Sunce jarko, ne sijas jednako", "Prag je ovo milog Srba" and "Jer puscani prah" (the second part of the song "Rado Srbin ide u vojnike" from 3:42 you can also hear melody from Serbian Drina march :)

I was a university student in Leningrad in the Soviet Union in the 70s. I often visited the Finnish railway station in Leningrad, where the express train called the Red Arrow arrived every evening from Moscow. In the 1-2 minutes before arrival, Leningrad greeted those arriving by train with a very beautiful solemn melody over the loudspeakers of the railway station. I haven't been able to find what that tune was since. Almost 50 years have passed since then, but I still often think about him, dream about him. I haven't been there since. Is the tradition still alive? Does anyone know anything about this? Could it have been a fragment of a similarly sublime work by Tchaikovsky?

So fatalistic. This captures perfectly the Slavic mind-set of being consigned to one's fate and embracing it. And as a result, it creates a kind of peacefulness in the soul that Anglo-Saxons can't fully embrace or understand. We are all bound for heaven or nothingness, depending on your beliefs. There seems to be a disagreement about the proper tempo of the piece, in the comments if not in the performance. I'll admit I find it personally much more exciting in a faster tempo, though clearly a directorial choice was made in this performance to take it slower. Except listening to this one the whole way through, I notice they made some of the most dramatic choices of tempo in any performance of this I've heard. Listen to how 6:32 accelerates until 7:10, then goes back down and all the way back up again in 15 seconds. Note that this is the second time through that passage. Though it makes the beginning a bit more challenging to stay awake for, not doing it at 2:21 to 3:24 makes it much more interesting to come back to it a second time. Also at 9:30, 9:57, and of course 10:55 are some much more dramatic ritardandos than other performances do. essentially, you may not agree with all the decisions made with the tempo, but they were absolutely deliberate and purposeful.
