I love this piece, in the original string sextet version. I don't care for the string orchestra arrangement, though I think Tchaikovsky himself is responsible for it.

I completely agree about the beauty and originality of this work. In general string sextets do not benefit from being orchestrated for full string orchestra, e.g., Schoenberg's "Verklarte Nacht". Much better in the original form!

Greg Spradlin I think the full orchestral performances are played on the original version itself...

This marvel of youthful talent and commitment is as humbling as elevating: such enthusiasm and exuberance, with formidable musical skills, founding so natural a unity, such spirited feel for the lyrical drama and dynamism of this discursive piece, form a triumph; individual voices of instruments, richness of tone, intense melody and flow, no less their convergence, are sublime.

I don't hear anything humble, what I hear in addition to the youthful talent enthusiasm and exuberance you comment on is a spontaneity that someone else might call rough or abrasive, but it's these 'imperfections' that haven't been ironed out that make it all that more addictive - I can't stop listening to it for weeks. GO FOR IT!

la música no es ilusión sino mas bien revelación y he aquí donde da toda su fuerza, que no es transitoria sino perpetua reconciliación con la vida. comentario de Pior Ilich Chaikovski.

Wow, the bit around 15.45 sound like early Schonberg! To the untrained ear.

Perhaps this is because Schonberg also wrote a very famous string sextet"Transfigured Night" Check it out!

So much of Tchaikovsky is great and this sextet is no exception one of my favourite chamber works for string groups, so inventive. That lovely Italian warmth and charm. Thanks KZbin
