The tv says it will properly format the usb drive............but the tv doesn't detect any of the sticks I've tried.. this video really should be called HOW TO FORMAT USB ON MAC-2 WAYS, I expected to see a basic run thru on the TV up in there somewhere.. I appreciate ur time and effort to share knowledge tho, I got my 1st Mac a couple years ago and still dont know how to use some of the "basic" functions

This totally solved my problem. I had a new 128 gigabye samsung memory bar, and my tv wouldn't recognize. I reformatted for Ms-DOS(FAT) and now it works. Thanks!

If any one is having the issue with the black friday tv's not updating. The video didnt run the drive for me but very informative for future use. I was able to get it to update by using a LAN cable. Once I did that it took the update. (Please note: this is for the black friday deal tv's 55 inch TCL 55S20. ).

@@TechandDesign Question that is a part of the topic.Just bought a 40 inch tcl and the usb video ans subs works fine from a hdd.The problem is i dont see any setting for time dellaying the subs in case they dont match.Do such a option exist in the tv? My old 2011 budget samsung did had this.

This will not solve most people’s problem with this issue. It’s specific to the TCL TV and not their drives. Most drive are already formatted correctly and most media is already in an acceptable format for the TV to play back. The issue is with the TV itself and it’s really frustrating.
@TechandDesign4 жыл бұрын
Actually this fixed the problem with most people since not all TVs can read exfat and usb sticks always need to be formatted to the correct format you need. If your tv has a problem I suggest just stream
@warpathh4 жыл бұрын
Tech & Design False. Most people have an issue with usb power, not format. Almost every jump drive known to man is formatted in a way that works for the specifications so you are just running your mouth at this point.

@@warpathh I managed to make an SSD (in enclosure) to work on a TCL TV by dividing it into 32gb partitions and formatting all partitions into fat32. All partitions are recognized by the TV. Exfat and NTFS doesn't work.

I used the PNY Attache 16gb on my 55" TCL Roku tv without any issues. I scanned for channels. Then the last steps asks if you want to setup up playback and formats the usb drive. That was it.

On the top left of disk utility click 'show all devices', then click on the actual disk not the partition and you should have that option when erasing

If this solution doesn't work for you as it didn't for me. Here's what I did. The problem is that macOS doesn't go well with Android but it goes somewhat well with windows. So to make your USB device work on your TCL tv you'll have to interchange between systems. First I partitioned and formated my WD external 2TB HD to ExFat with master boot record in 2 partitions on my Macbook pro. Then I inserted my hd in my Windows PC and formated only one of the two partitions in NTFS. It turned out my TCL 55" C815 Android Smart TV doesn't read ExFat but it reads NTFS. The only problem is that I cannot write files on the NTFS partition on my macOS so I write them on the ExFat partiton and then transfer them on the NTFS partition with my PC. Now when I insert my HardDrive in my TCL the TV reads the NTFS partition. Hope this will help some of you.

Thanks, my tx is not working with exFat as well. I will try NTFS

If you want your TCL TV to recognize your usb you have to let the TV itself format the drive. I have the Android version, not the Roku version, but it must be pretty straight forward on Roku as well. So plug in your USB stick and go to > settings > device preference > storage.... there you will see your device storage and removable storage. select the removable storage and choose format. After you finish that unplug your USB stick and connect it to your PC. If windows promts you with an error... that your usb needs a scan or it has to be formated, choose ignore. Put some media on your USB drive and eject it, and connect it to your TV. If you get a dialog asking you to choose the purpose of the drive, choose removable drive instead of an internal drive. Open VLC or whatever mediaplayer you are using, browse to the drive and voilá, Enjoy.

This is the real solution. Don't use a USB stick formatted for purely Mac use. Use a universal format. Most people will never have to format a flash drive to use with their TVs.
@asym525 ай бұрын
Nope. None of this worked. I had done all of these things myself before watching this video. Nothing new. And nothing worked. Waste of time.
@TechandDesign5 ай бұрын
not really a waste of time since now you know there is a problem with your usb stick or the tv. but most likely you didn’t try all of these combinations though
@asym525 ай бұрын
Oh, I did. But thanks for the gratuitous rudeness. That was fun. There is no problem with either of my usb sticks, that is, they work everywhere else. And there is no problem with either of the multi-terabyte hard drives I hooked up to it, either. Yeah, there's something wrong with the tv, but I didn't really need to spend all that time and energy to find that out. I realize that most of your viewers are probably not very savvy, technically, but what do you gain by treating even those people as if they didn't know what they're doing. (And now I have to go through the same routine with TCL. Because most of the people who buy tv's are not very savvy, technically. Oh well.
@asym525 ай бұрын
Hahaha, now who's not savvy, technically. Turns out it was a very simple, and very obvious problem. My memory sticks were both 64 GB. The kids over at the geeksquad said "nope. 32. It's a cheap little tv. It just can't handle 64 gigs. The end." I hope that that make you grin. It made me grin. At myself. Pfffft. All the best to ya.
