I have watched dozens of videos on reading comprehension and this is the only one that seemed actually doable. Thank you. I can't wait to try this with my son.

Thank you so much! My little brother is struggling with his comprehension because he rushes through his reading. I’m looking for a structured strategy to help him learn how to read to understand. My dad and stepmom are at their wits’ end and RTI at school is helping slowly. I think the Fab Four and some skill leveled passages are going to help him make great strides in his learning.

The problem these days is that around where my son goes to school, they don't have text books, they don't write on paper (they use a laptop for everything), they don't have notes, and they never bring any work home for my wife and I to really see where he's struggling

That's how I found out my child had a "bad teacher". The teacher refused to send home concrete feedback/ suggestions on how to help my child improve his reading. We went extremed and asked for a different teacher. It was like night and dat. Sometimes bad teachers make bad students.

Ask for your child's assessment results performed in school. Typically there is an assessment per quarter. Keep email chains just in case you have to elevate your concerns. Start with the teacher, then principal if no resolve, then the assigned school student advocate if no resolve, then principal supervisor. Most districts have a raise your concern cheat sheet that shows you the path to raise issues. Have facts and tangible evidence. Then advocate for the child to be moved.

We actually USE this during guided reading! Guided reading includes all the Fab Four strategies.. we just LABEL and NAME them during Fab Four lessons.

What about for adults? I never retain what I read and I read slow.. I’ve always suffered from this.. but there’s so many books I want to read .. I want a library, but I lose train of thought and get bored and start thinking of other stuff.. if the text is big letter or bold I find it easier, but I’m interested in legal type content and that makes it even harder. Debating paying 140$ a year for speechify because I can’t find a free equivalent

You need repetition. I had that issue when I first started college. Then I met a professor who was life changing. He had me just read book after book. It’s ok if you have to read a paragraph over. Start with news articles from things like NY Times and financial times. Then move on to short books. Good luck.
