1989 OSAN AIR BASE SONGTAN CITY WALK

Stuck in my old military gear I found this vcr tape. I transfered it to digital. A day recording in 1989 with some friends around the Main Gate of Osan AIr Base/ Songtan City - our last ays before Jayne and I shipped out to Ramstein Germany. Its been cut down from 2 hours to 30 min. I hope you enjoy and maybe you can re-live crazy town!

I was last at Osan AB in 1988, TDY from Clark AB. I was stationed at Osan for 4 years.

I was there from 1985 - 1986. Some of the most gracious people I've ever met. They were building a new hospital and commissary on base before I left.

89-90, shot in dart leagues all over Songtan. My house up and down, Batman club, Superman club, Aragon Alley. Jim beam was king for trade, they use to write our Ssn’s on the bottles to try and catch you in the off color market. If you bought Shampoo and Ox tail to your favorite peeps you were a hero. Really great people and I loved the culture if you didn’t abuse it. Kimchi bus cracked me up, I got on a wrong bus one time and all the locals tried to help me get back to Osan. I understand the base has really built up since then, all we had was the 51’st wing and all the intel people in the mountain. Great memories from that year. Nothing like a pizza from the NCO club at midnight.

Loved the video. Fresh Bayliner jacket! Back when people were camera shy instead of taking endless selfies. I was stationed there in 2000-2001 with the Blackcats and Songtan really wasn't too different looking from this video 11 years prior, but it was even more bustling business wise in the video than I remember. I had glasses made, for one third the price of what they would cost in the US at that exact optical shop you see the sign for as you're all walking out the main gate. Boogie House was the only bar on that street I recognize as still being open, but Golden Gate, UN club, the Zone, Apache, Playboy, Penthouse (which ironically was in a basement), Young Chon, the notorious Smitty's and many others were still alive and kicking. I used to swear I would fly space A and return after I retired and wasn't subject to the curfew. But recent videos where the first thing you see right outside the gate is a bank, instead of a vendor selling penis dolls, have made me just appreciate that I was there during the good ol days. I wonder if Sam Il bulgogi is still operating as well as all the Yaki Man do and chicken on a stick street carts we used to hit up at 1:30 AM so we could make curfew and have our drunk food in the dorms. Thanks for uploading this, it really brings back great memories. Those who haven't been to Korea or have never served in the military don't know the adventure they missed out on. I truly feel sorry for them.

I was there from 88-90. It was nice to see all of those places. I went to Stereo, Hill Top, Golden Gate, VIP but mostly Skinny Mom’s. Me and my buddy would get there at 7:00 am and she would let us open the bar. She let her regulars run a tab. All of that being said the dude in the blue jacket is why a lot of them hated us. I thought he was a dick.

+Pilot n Training now this was in 1981. Used to walk or ride my bike to the field. It was right off the right side of the main gate. The left field side was bordered by the base fence. People living in, I guess there were apartments over the fence in left field, would watch us play . I was in Skivvy Nine from May of 81 till Sept of 81. My dad got very ill and I was called home by the Red Cross. Then reassigned to Keesler to finish up in 1982. As I remember the road from the main gate was up above the field on the right field side, there were trees from the road down the little slope that bordered the right field side.

+Edwin Pittman Skivvy Niner from '82 to '84. We played softball at the fields by the gym. I thought I remembered there being a field by the main gate but it was used by the ROK forces stationed there. They would always be playing volleyball with their feet. Too much soju has clouded those memories a bit though so I could be mistaken.

I'm not sure who is recording this but Tracy and I were stationed together there at the same time we dated on it off then we dated some more when we got onto the East Coast we have been friends since Korea and I just wanted you to know which I don't know if you did know that he put app a good fight and he never stopped asking me to marry him and he truly was a good love of my life But when I saw this it felt like he was telling me everything was okay and so I can't say thank you enough
