I wonder how they would have advertised this feature if it was kept in. "If you have this obscure accessory, you can use voice commands as a substitute for extremely specific actions!" Weird. Also, Skawo voice reveal? Or I'm just dumb and it was already a thing in an earlier video I missed.
@SkawoКүн бұрын
Yeah, and it's... really inconvenient to use any of these. And, technically, yes.
@ejej118721 сағат бұрын
I don't think they set out to make this with the assumption that the accessory would be obscure, it could've been advertised like any other feature had the microphone been successful
@Meatball1324 сағат бұрын
Given that this system was never used, it's entirely possible these weren't the actual intended use cases and were just used for testing, so I wouldn't harp on them about the actions being so specific. That said, it's not like I can think of any better use cases for this system. That's probably the main reason the feature didn't make it in; they just couldn't find an application for it that didn't seem forced.

Just during this year, I learned Skawo has two hands and a VOICE. Maybe he's just one of those floating hands bosses. Jokes aside, this is interesting. I love Nintendo's old microphone peripherals, they suck so bad.

@@renakunisaki They probably would have had that in here too. This is unused code, after all. It might be a fragment of a partially developed system.
@Skawo4 сағат бұрын
@@yomama9390 In fact, I wonder if the reason it doesn't work is because it's meant to be push to talk, and they just removed all the ways of, well, "pushing".

Wow, I thought I knew everything about MM. This is crazy. Yeah the N64 microphone didn't always work great. My guess is that this feature didn't take long to develop, they probably just copied over the function from Hey You Pikachu, and toyed around with it. That said, I wonder if it would be possible to bypass the N64s terrible voice recognition with a more modern better voice to text translation layer, and then just pipe that command output back to the N64 to tenfold improve all voice recognition games?
@TriStain10 сағат бұрын

Im surprised that you have to say the english word for milk, rather than the japanese word, gyuunyuu (ぎゅうにゅう). Also, in japanese, when writing non native words, you use Katakana, but when writing native words, you use hiragana. So for the gossip stone, it should be written as "あとなんじかん" or "あと何時間" if you wanted to use kanji. Interesting video though! With most unused stuff in games, you have to ask yourself, "I wonder why this was cut," but with this, i just have to ask, "Why was this put in in the first place?"
@Skawo21 сағат бұрын
For the Japanese words transcribed in the video I was just copying what the game uses internally for the voice recognition -- github.com/zeldaret/mm/blob/4724a2b7fe5cfce5d8334643875115e68c253ec2/src/audio/voice_external.c#L6

@Skawo wow, that's actually even more interesting! I wonder why it's like that.
@YeahImRose19 сағат бұрын
It's not like ミルク is a super uncommon way to say it, and maybe they were having trouble with the extended vowel sounds in 牛乳
@Meatball1324 сағат бұрын
@@EmilyCorradino The textbook explanation you'll get of katakana is that it's used to write loan words, but that's not the exclusive reason you'd write words with it. In this case, the words are being sounded/spelled out for pronunciation, not being used as the actual word - and from a technical perspective, the voice recognition software has to decode it, too. You'll also see katakana for emphasis (much in the same way someone would write a word in italics or all caps in English), and to indicate an unnatural tone (robots, aliens, etc), among other things.

I know you're using the English version of Majora's Mask, so, can the American VRU work the same way?

@PlantedWave51907 сағат бұрын
@Skawo Ah, I see. Sorry I asked. I know the Japanese VRS Unit won't work with the American version of Hey You, Pikachu!, or vice versa.
@YeahImRose20 сағат бұрын
The stone time one is 後何時間?, or how much more time?"
@Skawo17 сағат бұрын
It's based directly on the day transitions. e.g あと72時間 "Ato 72 jikan" - was localized as "72 hours remain", hence why I translated it as "How many hours remain?"
@Meatball1324 сағат бұрын
@@Skawo In addition to paralleling Nintendo's official localisation, "How many hours remain?" is no less literal of a translation than "How much more time?" so I'm not entirely sure what the point they're making here is.
