@@glennkemp6565 I was fortunate enough to become friends with Ed. From 2013 until he died. We talked a good bit. He told me Leon was his favorite of the Skynyrd gang. He also said he STILL loved and wanted to play bass all these years later.

@@samlott99 Sam thank you for sharing that memory. Ed seemed like such a kind soul. His bass playing on Pronounced was outstanding. Very melodic. Have you ever noticed how everyone fell all over themselves praising Steve Gaines. I love Steve as well. And how the band always tried to re create their songs live just like the records. But, every lead passage that Ed King created, not one of the three could play Ed's parts. For example, the solos on Workin for MCA, and Sweet Home Alabama were just slop on the live album. I always thought it was kinda sad when I spun One More From the Road and heard that weak piece that Steve put together on MCA. No one ever mentions that. Anyway, I'm not trying to put a hat on Steve's candle. I love his playing and he was a great fit for Skynyrd. But Ed King is a towering figure in my guitar book. Thanks again for sharing your memories. Godspeed to you.

Aren't these Docs gems?. He did one on Steve Gaines and I thought "Finally". An historian was, at least going to give us some information about a musician , probably only months away from Guitar Journals(e.g. Guitar Player.) He might have even got acknowledgement from." Rolling Stone" ,ya know, the publication that failed to honor any of the four players in their "top 100 Guitarist All four should have been included. Steve Gaines inevitably would have been recognized and credentialed by the music establishment within a year Id estimate.

I never knew Leon was only 49 years old when he passed I’m not sure why but I thought he was much older. I’m a drummer so I have always been aware of Leon’s contributions to the band and I knew he was a good vocalist because I was lucky enough to see Skynyrd live 4 times before the crash. The last time I saw them was oct 13th 1977 just 4 shows before the crash. It was in Statesboro Ga. Mothers Finest open for them. It is still one of the best shows I ever witnessed by Skynyrd and MF was one of my favorite bands in the late 70s and early 80s BB QUEEN BORDON was the drummer for MF. He was a huge influence on my playing. He went on to play with Molly Hatchet and then settled in with Marshall Tucker for many years. I have so many memories of these great times.

Leon was a great player and has been compared to some of the best bassmen. And he deserves to be at the top of the list. But let's get him in the company he deserves to be in for a change... with the true giants of the instrument from the best era of rock. Leon is right there with martin turner and andy fraser. He was perfect for Skynyrd. Always brilliant but never in the way or over doing it. He made every tune he played on better for his part of the given number. Rock solid but inventive at the same time... just like Turner and Fraser.

Leon's bass playing added to the Skynard sound, like the commentator said, he laid down the bottom end with tasteful, sweet baselines. Also like the commentator said his backing vocals were strong and right on point. Never saw Skynard with Ronnie, had tickets to see them on the last tour when the plane went down and was devastated. I had only been into them for about a year and was looking forward to seeing them live but fait came and took that away. Saw the new version until Leon Past and that was it for me. RIP Leon.

Loved the bass heavy sound of most of the songs on the first album. But the second album was inconsistent and the rest got less and less full range sounding. That Smell has a really small sound compared to Simple Man (speaking of the mix). I love the bass on Simple Man. As great as the lyrics, vocals, Hammond, and guitars are it is the bass that makes that song so special.

I just recently left Jacksonville. I travel around now that I'm retired in my Fleetwood RV. Anyway, I went by Criswell Park. It's a football field today. I believe it was in the early 80s that it was no longer used as a baseball diamond. Believe it or not, the home plate was still in the ground. You couldn't see it, but I dig up the sod around it, and dirt for it was forgotten about overtime .But now I own it the beginning of a Lynyrd Skynyrd. The home plate in the late summer of 1964, where Ronnie Van Zant hit the foul ball that hit Bob Burns. Gary Rossington was there that is how they met.

For the longest time, I was under the impression t hat Bob Burns was playing in the field the day Ronnie Van Zant hit a line drive that drilled him. Damn near knocked Bob out. Turns out that Bob was sitting in the stands and never saw the ball coming. But, yes, that baseball field was where it started for Lynyrd Skynrd. You own a small piece of history.

It's sad now that they are all gone. The story of Lynyrd Skynrd is probably the most tragic story in rock history in which the final chapter was written after the passing of Gary Rossington. As a New Orleanian, I've seen them perform several times and they were like a 'home grown' group to me. All things must past and soon I will rejoin with them as one of their faithful fans.

Putting the raw talent and natural southern boogie of this legendary group aside, their look and appearance is timeless. Can you get anymore “badass” than Leon’s look? I know, I know. It’s supposed to be about the music. But, damn! The hair! The curls! The beards! The shades! Fk!

Leon’s influences were the same as mine. I played bass for thirty years, and Leon’s played influenced me as well. There are so many roads in music that have rusty nails sticking up that you have to watch your step or you’ll hurt yourself badly. I still miss his playing. RIP Leon.

The woman mentioned, who did slit his throat, also later cut his wrist. She used shard of glass and cut lengthwise, the serious way. Why she wasn’t locked up has always been a mystery to us. 😡

Yeah she was a loose cannon from all accounts. I pretty much believe as you do. I think Leon just kept it to himself about her. From all accounts and purposes she was pretty violent , especially when drinking. My guess is, she wasn't locked up because Leon didn't push it or press charges on her. Now this is just me speculating here. What's ironic is, Leon got locked up over her!! I guess maybe he was in love with her..who knows. Thanks for your comment and watching the video. I appreciate it.

Awesome video on Leon, one of the best. Two other bass players that don't get their due is Charlie Hayward from the Charlie Daniels Band and Tommy Caldwell.

A good friend and once you told him your name he would remember it from them on! When we talked about the Battle of the Bands at the Tropical Teen Club in Jacksonville he remembered me and from then on when in town him and Bear his bodyguard would go to the Tradewinds Bar…Wee would sit in with The Alligator Cowboys. One night he dropped Troy’s fender, precision base. Fortunately, it didn’t break now Troy is gone and in heaven playing with Leon. Both of you guys are greatly bass players, rest in peace.

Ed King said Leon did 3 months in jail for beating up Rhonda. That is the girl he was with when his throat was cut. But I have never seen any solid proof that he did any time. Just throwing it out there because Ed said this in an interview.

Nice tribute to Leon. I played bass in a Skynyrd cover band years and years ago and I just loved playing Leon's bass lines and I believe you are right sir, Leon Wilkeson was born to play bass in the Lynyrd Skynyrd band. I've seen a few of your other videos, which I enjoyed .

Not underrated at all. Been highly, rightfully rated, for years. He may not be TALKED about so much, but he's always been known as "world-class." Poison Whiskey, 3 Steps, countless others. Great player. Not good. Great.
