“My Saddest Hour” ---The “Original” Five Keys-LIVE 1983

I’ve temporarily lost access to my A/V editing software! but I found an old video I never got to post (but I have gotten lots of requests for.) The Five Keys, in my opinion, are the greatest all-around group of their era. They had 3 world-class lead singers and an awesome harmony background. Rudy West introduces the song, and Maryland Pierce recreates his original lead on their 14th recording for the Aladdin label-a soulful blues ballad from the fall of 1953. It was a territorial hit on the East Coast and in the Midwest in early 1954. Maryland is backed up by Rudy (who does Dickie’s part in this song), Ramon Loper (who replaced Dickie Smith), Ripley Ingram, and Bernie West

The 5 keys are perfection all the way. I had the honor of seeing them in NYC during the late 1960's. I love they way they switch leads between Maryland Pierce and Rudy West. Bernie West on bass is also incredible. You can listen to this song over and over again and always hear something new. Great post-THANK YOU.

A classic. Never get tired of hearing it. On the original Dickie Smith did the bridge, but in this 1983 version, Rudy does that part. No matter who--Awesome!
