Hi Chris. Nice tea boxes and a fine video that demonstrates and explains clearly your processes. I have been a woodworker for over 40 years and I cannot remember how many tea boxes and other boxes I have made. That said, I learned something from you. Well, more so than learned, I received a wake up call from you. After you made reference several times to seeking to maintain as much of the grain match as possible, I found myself thinking "Give it a rest...it will be fine or "close enough". But then I thought "NO, he's right! In short, I feel I may have become complacent in my woodworking and too quick to settle for "that's good enough". I am going to try to get back to the perfectionist mentality I used to possess and that you display. Thanks for the wake up call! Stay safe in the shop!

How did you know how long to leave the side piece before cutting them down further?

Hi Michael, good question! The length was determined based on the desired dimensions of the individual compartments. Let's say the compartments are 2" wide x 1.5" deep, box sides are 3/8" thick and the divider stock is 1/8" thick. The length of the long sides of the box (to the long side of the miter) are then determined by adding 2+2+2 (the width of three compartments) + 1/8+1/8 (two dividers) + 3/8+3/8 (thickness of 2 box sides) = 7". How can I build this box if I do not have a table saw, planer, and jointer?

It would be a challenge no doubt. I have invested a lot of time and practice to develop this skill so even with all the tools it’s still a challenging project. Lots of other good videos out there in addition to mine to help you learn 👍🏼

Several poor and unsafe tablesaw techniques. Never stand directly behind the blade in case of kickback. Never push the wood with left hand toward the blade - it can pinch. Pressure against the fence has to be removed as the wood reaches the blade. Keep your left hand away from the blade! There is no need for it to be there if your set up your cut properly. Nice boxes, though.
