Wafa Ghnaim is an accomplished Palestinian researcher, author, and educator. From the age of two, she began learning the art of embroidery from her mother, Feryal Abbasi-Ghnaim, a celebrated artist. Wafa's book, Tatreez & Tea: Embroidery and Storytelling in the Palestinian Diaspora, showcases the traditional patterns taught by her mother and is a vital document of cultural preservation. As the first-ever Palestinian embroidery instructor at the Smithsonian Museum and a Collections Specialist for the Museum of the Palestinian People in Washington, D.C., Wafa is a pioneer in her field. She also serves as a researcher for The Metropolitan Museum of Art’s Islamic Arts Department. In 2016, she founded The Tatreez Institute, a global arts education initiative that extends her mother's legacy of teaching and sharing Palestinian embroidery.

So grateful for Wafa’s hard work and deep devotion to keeping Palestinian heritage thriving. I agree that Tatreez and other indigenous art forms are fine art, and am thrilled to see someone like Wafa actively working with museums to defend the value of this art form. Thanks to Wafa for her service to Palestinians and marginalized communities everywhere.
