I always wanted to get a reel to reel deck mainly for nostalgic reasons. But, during the 2000's and currently I, do all of my recordings from the master CD, to CD-R. The recording is so much easier and better than tape recordings But, back in the late eighties and nineties, I, stopped recording with cassettes was going to buy a reel to reel machine. But, the salesperson at the store I was going to buy my tape deck convinced me to record on a HI FI, VHS, video machine. At first I couldn't understand why but, he had explained to me that if I just take my thinking away from the video part and just think of audio. Then had explained to me that a HI FI, VHS, signal to noise ratio, (104db)(+or-), is almost as close to a Compact Disc. So, I've learned how to record from CD, to VHS. To my amazement the sound quality was much better than any tape machines out there during that time. The sound was clean, clear, with no hiss or flutter from the VHS, tape deck. That's the reason why I've never bought a tape deck in that era. But, I still want to purchase a reel to reel tape deck, to compliment my music only stereo system. Your tape deck is awesome!

Wow, very interesting. I was big on the cassette idea in the mid 1970's. They were much better than eight tracks. And safer than playing LP's while stoned. Got an open reel deck in 1982, a Teac X-3 machine and have been pleased with it's performance ever since. The S/N response greatly improved with CD's and my "tape days" are relegated to mostly nostalgic listening. I have many once-in-a-lifetime recordings on tape that ain't available on any other format. A lotta interviews with folks like John Lennon, Billy Joel, Springsteen, Zappa, Aynsley Dunbar, Paxton, even Pete Seeger. But yeah, ya can't argue with 104dB signal to noise ratio's. My last (recent) tape deck purchase was a Denon DRM-800A machine last year for $125, a freakin' steal. Thanks for the education.

@@martyjewell5683 Incidentally, some of my Lp's, that I can not get on Compact Disc format, (most of my Lp's are from the 1970's), I, also record them from Lp, to CD format. This is my way on hearing the songs or album's without touching my vinyl's ever again after recording them on Compact Disc. It is also fun when I record them manually. It makes me feel like a recording engineer. I, also have a console that includes a turntable FM/AM radio, and an 8 track player. All of the functions still actually works. I'm never getting rid of that console unit. It reminds me of my childhood and teenage years throughout the 1970's.

@@sweetness_5772, my teen years were the 1960's and by mid 1970's I was bitten by the hifi bug. I dig what you're saying about recording. I made lotsa assorted cassette tapes and got quite good at recording (riding the gain). I had two cassette decks and would tape off air and later edit them for songs only, like stealing (pirating?) music off the internet today! Some intact tapes have complete radio broadcasts with commercials, weather and news. Also have many interviews with folks like Tull, Zappa, Joel, Springsteen, Paxton, Lennon and many more. All priceless recordings to me and probably not available anywhere. The LP to CD idea can help preserve your record collection. I always liked the LP jacket artwork and liner notes. I recall the hifi console idea was really popular in the late 60's, early 70's till the Japanese built audio for the American masses.

If that were true why don't $10 million dollar recording studios use VHS machines. Simple, they don't come close to full track Studer reproducers running on Dolby A at 30ips. NOT EVEN CLOSE

Had the same machine with remote, dust cover, original box, and dust cover. Bought it in Japan in 86’ when I was in the navy. It was $880 in 1986 $$. That’s about $2100 in today’s money. Bought it at the Navy exchange in Yokosuka, Japan. Sold it and kicking myself in the ass for doing that.

I bought mine in 1983 over in England at RAF Lakenheath. I took it out service for a number of years while I was strictly into home-theater. A few months ago I pulled it and my other old-school gear back out. Had the x2000r fully serviced by a pro. Had a pair of Bose 501 Series lll reconditioned. Technics TT, Sony receiver and EQ also back in use. Topped it of with my Pioneer 8-track player that I bought 1973. Lol! I'm having more fun every day with this gear now than I did the first time. Sorry you sold yours too. Even if you can get another one. Nothing like your first love!

Bought mine from Adak Naval station in '86 from their catalog for about 800.00 . I loved that thing, I was obsessed with it. Why the hell did I sell it . It had DBX, the remote, EE capabilities and ran both ways .

Mine has been covered with a towel for years. I cleaned everything and the reels will fast forward in either direction, but it won't play?

The capstan belt has turned to goo, take the cover off the deck and look at the flywheels. You will see the capstan belt has turned to mush. Either that or your tape lifters have seized up with dried grease, but most likely the capstan belt.
