This is such a great video to other creators - the message of "How to install a filter" might never be surfaced as a result - might have to make another video 😄I'm guilty of this as well - I need to film more "intro" level content.

You know, here in Portugal they say that this type of person who doesn't value the work of others is like a bucket full of crabs. One tries to escape but the others all try to pull him back into the bucket! Good work, keep going, no matter how simple something may seem, there will always be someone who will appreciate it.

Hey there fellow dilettant, I found your channel a week or so ago and have watched many of your videos so far. It's nice to watch a "normal" American man living a "normal" American life, sharing his ideas, knowledge, and adventures, along the way. So thank you for that Tom. I have actually found all of them enjoyable to watch. Even though I have 40 years as an industrial maintenance electrician I know for a fact, no one is born knowing anything and we all have to learn everything we know at some point. My 2015 Subaru Outback has 230,000 plus miles on it and I have changed the air filter every 10K miles or so myself, but for some strange reason I had to watch you change it too, ha! And yeah, I enjoyed watching you do so. Okay, I may be ramblin on here, so last but certainly not least. My youngest Son is a currently serviing US Marine (10+ years now, currently at Camp Lejeune) so I hope you can endulge my ramblings here on my first comment here. As they say, my Son has many Brothers, therefore I have many Sons. You take care my Marine Son, and a very Merry Christams to you and your family.

welcome fellow dilettante! 230k miles on the Outback eh? Very impressive! Well done maintaining it! Great to hear your son is in the MC, I hope he is happy and successful. For me, the MC provided something sadly missing from many Americans on both sides of the political aisle...perspective. Seeing how most of the world would kill to have what many of us call a "bad" day does wonders to help "reframe" points of view and led me down the (possibly naive) path of trying to being the positive change I'd like to see. haha..now who's rambling? :). Merry Christmas to you and yours and thanks for watching!

Good on ya, Tom! That is a message that I hope DIY'ers of all experience levels take to heart. There's more value to teaching than most realize and we can all benefit from a teaching moment regardless of whether we are teaching or learning.

Thank you. No, I haven't attempted to change the filter on my '22 Outback Wilderness, although I am sure I could. I clicked on the video more for the title. I've found the situation you describe in literally every hobby I've been involved in, to the point where I've had to say "hey, we were all beginners once." I was Army, you were Marines, the commonality is how good leaders act. Lead on, Marine.

you are actually perfectly spot-on with this specific service. recently i took my wife’s ascent in for some warranty work and i also took advantage of a really fair priced oil change coupon. Well recently i have been seeing service centers create a short video of the car’s inspection. i really liked that. After the video you get a chance to select what additional services you want to have performed as recommended by the technician making the video. they laid my wife’s “dirty” air filter on top of the engine to show how “dirty” it was. again, nice to see the tech actually pulled the filter. what is kind of ridiculous is that they wanted another $24 in service fees to put the new filter in, even though they needed to put the old back in regardless. why do this? it makes me get so frustrated. knowing how to change the air filter and also how to make sure the airbox is secured is great knowledge. i could actually go on and on with different unfair practices dealers have or have done but i won’t. thanks for the video Tom. Semper Fi brother.

Thanks for watching and the great comment! I totally get (and can obviously relate) to that kind of frustration. I admit thought to being torn from time to time. My father was a mechanic at a Honda dealer for many years, and my uncle has owned his own garage for nearly 50 years. Mechs deserve to get paid for their work, and sadly dealerships aren't always good to them (i.e., BS hours on warranty claims, incompetent service writers, etc...). So while I'm always tempted to demonize a dealer for what I feel is unfair, I do try my best to remember the good techs behind the scenes that take pride in their work and are just trying to make a living. Anyway, I digress :). S/F and thanks for watching and chiming in!

You should do the cabin air filter next. I do all my own maintenance, but I had my Crosstrek in the dealer once and someone came to me with my cabin air filter in their hands asking if I wanted it changed out. I asked how much: $75.....and that was pre-inflation!

Thanks for the kind words! I agree. We're all beginners at some point eh? Some take knowledge and lord it over others to mask their insecurity, others help others become better versions of themselves. I hope to be the latter, and I'm guessing others that opt for the latter also realize how rewarding that approach can be :) S/F!

i’m still trying to teach them to put gas in the car before they run out. i know this might come acrossed as sexist but i am sure there are many men who forget to put gas in their cars as well. My personal experience is that the three ladies in my life all drive with their low fuel lights on regardless of how far they plan to drive. I am the gas man. I literraly fill up 5-gallon gas gans, load them in my truck, and then commence to filling up their cars. I don’t do this to enable them. I do this because i don’t want them on the side of the road because they ran out of gas. That is just too dangerous these days.
@TomtheDilettante
@TomtheDilettante 10 ай бұрын
oof! driving with the low gas light on gives me anxiety just thinking about it LOL! Fortunately, my wife hates to see her gas gauge below 1/2 and often has more gas than me :). After watching this video, she was surprised to see how easy an air filter was to change and was a bit indignant that she would have been charged $24 and said she'd give the next one a shot herself. Guess it's working LOL. Thanks for watching and chiming in!

thank for the great video, air filter s have changed over the years, its not like the old cars where you remove the wingnut and pull the top off of the air filter unit and pop in the round air filter. does the outback have a cabin air filter. I own a chevy trax and I changed my cabins air filter. and I had to dig around on KZbin for videos on how to change that. the people who post nasty comment's show how scared they are to DIY things and the should join the DYI community.

I had to look up DYI and after laughing for about 5 minutes, I made a note to myself to try to come up with a video of DIY vs DYI that covers how to accidentally avoid the latter (i.e., laying under a rotor without jack stands, etc....). Also, your old school air filter description immediately brought back memories of when the wing nut was corroded to the threaded shaft and you end up pulling the whole shaft out instead LOL. Thanks for watching and chiming in . Keep em coming :)
