Do you know the #1 skill all late talkers are missing? IMITATION! They don't know how to imitate words... which is always linked to late talking. In fact, imitating can be the most important thing that separates late talkers from toddlers who are already talking. Imitating is how toddlers learn everything, especially how to talk! So... how do we teach nonverbal toddlers to imitate? Obviously, we can't start by trying to teach them to say words. They're not able to repeat words no matter how much we beg, bribe, and plead! What most parents of late talkers don't know is that there are "levels" of imitation that all kids learn before they begin to talk... whether a child talks late or on time. During their first year and a half, babies learn these levels of imitation easily and naturally as they mature and grow. When a child doesn't begin to talk on time, we know that a child has gotten "stuck" in an earlier level of imitation and hasn't been able to progress to imitating words. When this happens, we must determine where they're "stuck," meet them there, and then help them learn to imitate at higher levels until they're developmentally ready to imitate real words. Once they're imitating easily and frequently, we've turned them into full-time imitators, which leads to a child who talks!

Laura, thank you so much for the information on your website and this podcast. I wish I came across you earlier, but better late than never. Almost everyone I talked to about our son not yet talking said it's all fine and had a story about someone who didn't talk by age 3 and I let it comfort myself. Yes, everyone is in fact different but that doesn't mean you can't help them early in the development, rather than wait for a "miracle" to happen. I feel sorry for our now 2.5 yo not able to tell me what he'd like or how he feels, when he's obviously trying to let us know but doesn't know how. I am going to do my best to get all the info needed to help him. Thank you so much for everything again.

I look forward to your new podcast series..Thank you for this video to! My child does have great cognitive skills, and also does have repetitive language. We are still working on imitation. Our child watches us with great focus but, will not copy us, yet! Our child knows what he wants. Does not point, grabs us by our hand and takes us to what they want. Our child does make great eye contact with adults and other children. I would have to say that many of these things are very positive. We will continue to work with our child and hope for more progress. Thank You Laura ~ you're the best!

What can you say about toddlers who were typically developing until 12 months and then regressed. My son used to imitate gestures (never spontaneous) but stopped slowly over the course of the next year. He is 27 months old now and never imitates gestures. Along with no joint attention etc.

My son is 25 months now I’m a little worried about him as well. But all kids are different. If they want some that they can’t get or need they will try to to let you know. My son say nana instead of dada He always has but we have to be patient with them. Makes things excitable and words means nothing without the object ball ⚽️ show ball car show car or make the sound they make boom vrom beep beep they will get it
