We speak with renowned Florida educator Marvin Dunn about the fight to protect the teaching of Black history in the face of racist curriculum changes in the state that justify slavery and downplay violence against African Americans. Ahead of the first day of school, Dunn helped lead a "Teach No Lies" march to the Miami-Dade County School Board Wednesday to protest the new education standards. "We are now in a confused, demoralized state of education in Florida," says Dunn, author, professor emeritus at Florida International University and co-founder of the Miami Center for Racial Justice. He has been leading tours of teachers and young people to places like Rosewood, site of a 1923 massacre of Black residents by a white mob.

all of it. My tribe had 150 black slaves that were taken on The Trail Of Tears. This is why American Indians do not race bait. American Indians had slavery so did black people and most others.. They are leaving out the fact that more than a few black parents went off on the schools. look how he keeps saying "' White people ""The films made of the school tell a different story. All this division needs to stop.

My high school, John Bartram was the first Magnet school in the country; VP Humpfrey visited our school to make it official. That meant that students from all over the city could come and take advantage of our excellent Black History curriculum and they did. I feel so sad for the students and teachers in Florida and other states that are now suppressing the truth through this blatantly bias curriculum.

I'm 73 and was born in PR..When we came to the US inland , my family settled in CT. I started school late (7) and had a lot of catching up to do as far as education goes. Went through grade school, then HS in Hartford. I have never heard about the true story about the 1923 Massacre in Rosewood Florida nor anything about 'Black Wall Street' in 1921 OKlahoma... This definitely needs to be taught at least in 7/8 grade and in HS. This is a shame. Along on the same subject, I never knew what Columbus did or caused to the original inhabitants of PR the Tainos to be extinct, where settlers enslaved Taínos as laborers .. Of course we know about the africans slaves being brought over by Columbus also...Everyone needs to know about history bad or good...Mostly BAD sad to say....

This is just a tallking point pushed by people trying to downplay the horrible institution of slavery . Slavery in America was based on only black people being slaves ,and whites being predominantly slave owners . What happened often than not ,is that free blacks raised money and if posible , bought the freedom of friends and relatives .

This is one historian that stands basically alone. Any credible historian will refute the framing and even some of the "facts" being taught. There is far more documentation about our founders than any black history cited here. They all kept detailed diaries and shared their struggles with slavery and how it was wrong. People are complicated, and so is history. Black history isn't a thing. It's American history or bust. The horrors of slavery have been taught to us for a long time. We can teach both. We can teach the horrors but also teach that many white men also worked hard to dismantle the practice of slavery. Hundreds of thousands of white men died for black men to walk free today. But let's just forget about that because slavery is bad....The idiocy to forget the progress we've made will lead to our destruction as a society.

They do and nobody wants to hear it. Thomas Sowell shows exactly how slavery was the bedrock of the African tribes for hundreds of years, thousands perhaps, preceding America's role in slavery. Thomas Jefferson did not want to ratify the constitution due to slavery: in fact, America and England sent troops to Africa to quell the Masi and other tribes that did the actual enslaving. Slave comes from a word meaning Slav. A white person. More whites were enslaved by Moors and Berberes from Africa in 1776 than were ever imported to America. If you are going to teach history, show that slavery was ubiquitous, white people bought slaves from blacks in Africa, native Americans enslaved one another, and the groups who received the worst historical treatment don't complain about it. Like the Jews. Chinese were enslaved in america and built the railroads. I don't hear them bitching about reparations and slavery holding them back. In fact, Caribbean blacks who came from slaves and live in the USA today do better than most whites in terms of academics and income. They were not fed this lie that forever they will be held back by slavery. And yes, redlining did exist. Did. But blacks in America were more educated, more upwardly mobile, had a 99 percent family unit in tact until the welfare state which incentivized single motherhood for certain urban black populations. Educate, do not indoctrinate. Correlation is not causation. And race is but one lens through which to view history. If you are going to use race as a weapon, stop and ask why. Teach slavery as history, not that slavery is uniquely American. It never was and it is time to stop the polarizing nonsense this phony prof spouts. He's hardly Thomas Sowell or a scholar of the history of slavery is he. Italians were put in internment camps during ww2 with other groups. I don't hear them blaming the racism--like being referred to as a wop, a dego, for 100 years---on their personal failures.

These same Yt people that we will be seeking jobs from as we entered the workforce, we despised. I say they set us back because it was very little dialogue or explanation after we watched that bullshid. It made us as children ANGRY and hold a real disdain for anything that resembled Yt.
