Here is my story, not long a go, a friend of mine saw me playing mtg in college with some one, he never knew I play mtg and he saw that it was interesting, so he started watching me play mtg with some one else, and he started asking questions about how the cards work and how to play them. later that moment, I lend him a deck and he manage to beat me without me teaching him the combos of the deck. now 2 weeks later he manage to sell most of all hi yugioh/vanguard cards and bought a BFZ booster box and got pretty neat stuff. and he was interested in the landfall mechanic but he only made a random mono green and was having trouble playing it. So I helped him build a G/R landfall deck, i traded him some cards to with him to help him out, he seemed pretty happy and now he seems to enjoy the game much more than he did with Vanguard and Yugioh, and just the other day I showed him different mtg playing style such as commander and free for all, and he seem to like that and now all he talks about is mtg.

Asuma357 That's based on something I saw that happen once. I was hanging out at my LGS, someone walked in wanting to learn Magic, and then a very, VERY well-meaning "Johnny" player took them aside and proceeded to try and teach them MTG from absolute scratch using only his Modern Storm deck. The rest of us managed to politely extract the new player and start them out with something more...basic.

I suggest to not let your friend win. Just build both as crappy decks, so that both need a lot of luck to win. Also, put in just a few cards that will stop a play by the other deck, but not very often (you won't draw it enough to be effective)...this way your friend learns the mechanics of removal, but does not feel "shut out" all the time. Also, this video's format was cool.
@tempestandacomputer69518 жыл бұрын
+Sims Dreamer What i attempt to do is build a good deck and split it in half, with even amounts of land and unknown cards, that way we both have a good shot at winning.

I got a friend of mine into Magic just by having him watch me and another friend playing. After a few games he had his first favorite cards and got excited when a play with them succeeded. I found Duel Decks to be quite nice for playing with starters. They should be of the approximate same power and don't go overboard with using fancy mechanics. Most of the time their game plan is pretty straight forward too. And if you buy the first pack, your friend doesn't even need to spend his money on something he is not sure of whether to like it or not.

Haha love it! It's great how you show what control decks do to the game. I have seen too many people quit the game because they can't stand playing against control all the time. It deter's many new players from playing and they just quit. I know there are people who enjoy playing control, however magic is suppose to be about having fun and making friends. Not trolling.
@SnapquesterMage10 жыл бұрын
As a returning player, I was instantly put off by the strength of control decks. They're not fun to play and when playing with new players, it's extremely frustrating for them. I have a pretty painful black discard deck that I try not to use with newer players, because shutting down their hand and draw stops them from actually being able to play. It's excellent advice to steer as far away as possible from that kind of play for new players and wait until they can wrap their head around some of the more complex offensive and defensive strategies. Let them discover the soul-crushing pain of Esper control decks on their own in their own time...
@John-lk5su10 жыл бұрын
Lol yea one of my first competitive decks was a black discard deck with a little blue for bounce I built back in original mirrodin. I learned pretty quick that no one wants to play you, and if they do they hate it. I don't mind discard as much as say esper control though. Although thoughtseize can be a ball buster! XD

cfusionpm Yesterday I drafted a Waste Not, and I used it in my deck because I though it was great! I was playing against a 12ish year old, and an older player came up to us and corrected my usage for Waste Not, saying that the opponent HAS to DISCARD 1 of the 3 different card types (I was summoning the 2/2 black zombies whenever I killed one of his creatures). Having played Magic for a total of 2 weeks, this still confuses me. I've seen like, 2 cards that actually say to discard the creatures, not "Put it in the Graveyard" and whatnot. I need help :(
@John-lk5su10 жыл бұрын
+ChaosKai4444 are you asking what the difference between discarding and going to the graveyard from the board? If so discard means a card from their/your hand is put into the graveyard, whether it's random or chosen. Waste not only activates when opponent discards, not from killing a creature they have in play. Hope this is the answer you were looking for :)

My friend taught me to play few weeks back and let me build my own deck out of her cards. I have yet to test it against her, I will most likely get destroyed but how else will I learn? Her teaching mechanics were very visual and helped me understand what is happening! For example I cannot block a flying creature with non-flyer but the flying one can block the one on the ground because "it's not like it gets in the air once and never comes down. It has to sleep sometimes too and land" :) I'm having a blast already with this game!

A few years ago, I taught my daughter to play. If I remember correctly, we started using Portal Second Age decks. Then, as she got better we switched to Pack Wars, using M13 and then Return to Ravnica packs. This is a great format for learning to play and also a good way to learn the cards in a new expansion set. One way my approach differed from your advice is that I never did go easy on her, except for allowing a first free mulligan and one takeback per game. I did give advice during the game, however. Her first tournament was Dragon's Maze Game Day, where she got second place.

Gotta say: this is your best video so far, seems like you put many of your free time and lots of effort to do it. This could help me out with some friends that want to play magic, but, there's a catch; unfortunately there isn't any game stores in my town, and I gotta travel at least 1 hour to get to any, at least they send me any orders I have from time to time (sleeves, singles, some seal products like booster boxes and duel decks, etc) so, there's not much problem by asking them a few sample decks to get my friends into it, but a game store in town would be much better. Thanks for the advices, they would be helpful, and, maybe I'll send a picture of my playgroup by Facebook when it gets bigger
@feetymug979010 жыл бұрын
I actually have the same problem and it sucks. Because if you wanna start playing Magic more often and get better at it it's quite important to have a card shop near. It can get boring playing with the same people over and over again. And the worst part? You just don't have a way of changing it...not a cheap way.
@Felipaxo10 жыл бұрын
FeetyMug well that's true, but because the card shop owner doesn't bother in send me out the thinks I order (just paying for the product & shipping) I just travel for FNM or any other event every once in a while (Saturday draft, modern Thursday or commander Sunday), and, a lot of people seems to like Magic The Gathering over here, so, I don't mind it much, but, it's better when you live near a card shop. A LOT. But with a big community support (if possible) you'll have a great time

I used to keep 2 basic mono colored decks on hand just to teach people with. A goblin deck and an elf deck. Onslaught era, not optimal decks or anything. Kept them mono colored for simplicity. Had a list of the steps/phases of a turn for reference. Made teaching a lot easier.

It was a light-hearted joke, and disrespecting other people's interests isn't very nice. I like Magic, League, DotA, Strife, and many many many more games. I dislike Call of Duty, but I wont call all CoD players vulgar cavemen just because they innocently play a game they enjoy.

I'm an MtG player and I tried learning Netrunner a couple days ago and started wondering if it was too complicated. Man if Richard Garfield likes making anything it's fucking complicated card games. Thank you so Much RG.

I just started playing again a couple of months back, went to my first friday night magic last friday, was such a blast. I can't get any of my friends to play at all, not even to try the game once, they just straight up refuse and make the most idiotic excuses not to. Have tried getting coworkers to play, no success so far. So, I went to friday night magic in the local game shop, it was the most friendly and welcoming environment I've been for a really long time, even though most of them were half my age it made no difference. None of my decks were suitable for the standard tournament they have every friday, so one of the guys there ran home to pick up a deck I could borrow. Throughout the whole evening, they had pretty much lined up to come and help me and give advice, and hear anecdotes from back in the 90's when I was last playing the game. Ofcourse I didn't win the mini tournament, but I got 2nd to last, I'm happy with that considering how clueless I am about Magic today. Anyway, this wasn't meant to get this long. Nice channel, thanks for all the videos, has helped me a lot over the last month or two.

I have been a magic player off and on since the start. I am now introducing my daughter to magic. This video has some good points to it and has been very helpful. Thank you for all the video's. I am also a writer and my wife is my editor, English is not one of my strong points. Good luck with the channel professor and good luck with your classes, younger students can be oblivious to the commitment that collage realy is. I went back a few years ago for Computer Sci degree.

This has become my favorite channel since I started teaching my nephew how to play Magic only to have him turn into a little johnny. I think I need to expose him to the professor.

I use the Jace Vs Chandra and Garruck Vs Lilliana decks to teach people. As well as a very simple white deck with an Ajani in it.
