Thank you for this! About to start my first teaching job and I came across a mention of echoing while reading through my CELTA notes. This video helped a lot with ideas or how to avoid doing it.

Hello, Jo! I'm about to start a CELTA course this September and I came across your videos which are excellent for my prep! Well done! Although I've been teaching for 18 years I realised that I too have been making some mistakes. First of all, let me ask you something. Why is recasting wrong? I really thought I helped my pupils by doing that. Because if I say "You GO cinema?" expecting them to correct their previous answer, they would probably say "Yes". But when I say "Oh, you WENT TO THE cinema, right?" pointing out their mistakes, they usually go like "Oh, right, WENT". Thank you very much for your help! Keep up the good work!

Elena Papitsa Hi Elena - I guess the issue is about whether or not they notice it - in the case you're describing, they do, and this definitely happens but does it happen all the time? This article is quite a nice summary of some of the issues and the literature www.academia.edu/8129929/Recast_and_Its_Impact_on_Second_Language_Acquisition -I think you have to make an account with academia.edu, to view it, but that's free. Hope your CELTA goes well :)

I'm still reeling at the teacher who said "Good!" when the student said his father was dead 😢
