For Contextualization, I used to use the opening intro to Avatar: The Last Airbender or the opening to Lord of the Rings when Galadriel is giving the prologue. It really gets across that you can't just jump straight into a world and story without setting up a few key details about the backstory first. Your first few sentences should be setting the backstory for OUR history, just like Galadriel gives the backstory for HER history. Otherwise, if you tried to watch the Lord of the Rings movie, you'd probably be lost.

The stuff about using a movie or TV show frame that students know how to contextualize to frame the skill is super helpful. Thanks for sharing! In order to boost the skill of argumentation in my course, I have compiled a list of "light ethics" prompts from other colleagues to use when introducing thesis statements or claims or anything related to argumentation. I teach AP World History at Denver Christian High School in Colorado so I try to use topics relevant to our community. The best one, which happens to be on the docket for the next argumentation session, comes from our winsome librarian: "In 2019 and 2020, Denver Parks and Recreation herded up the geese in large parks, butchered them, and ground them up to use for a Thanksgiving feast for folks who are house-less. Should Denver Parks and Rec have done that? Why or why not?"

Yes! That’s brilliant! Extra-curricular material has always been my bread and butter, but the ethical slant is even better because it forces them into an argument.
