I’ve been a substitute school teacher for years. None of this is normal. Being physically at school like this is good for the parents if they have young children that they can’t leave at home while they go to work. Not everybody can work from home, so that’s good. Going to school like this, expecting young children to be emotionally and physically buttoned down by wearing masks for long periods, not being able to see the expressions of others, physically apart, staying in the classroom for lunch, etc.

@Bandana Dee Isaac are you out of your mind dude??? Teachers have had to change their whole way of teaching in less than a week to adapt to the new norm. Create lesson plans, activities, while also having to deal with their own families. And let's not forget end of the year assignments, when kids that are failing their grade have to turn in all their missing work. Who do you think does all the grading? Who do you think has to answer to the parents when they want an easy fix for a whole year's worth of work? The principal? The secretary? No, TEACHERS DO ALL THAT. Así que deje de hablar estupideces mijito, que onda no va conmigo. Ps. I was a teacher's daughter. Well, I just want to speak my situation. I’m not speaking for all, I just want to say something. I live in California and am a coming junior in high school. About 2 weeks ago, my school had sent a email to all the parents regarding how they want to teach. They made a vote and I suppose the votes would help decide wether the school year would be taught online or physical. My mom voted for it to be physical because she was thinking of me and my younger brother who is a coming freshman. Her and my dad work so she thinks that we’re not responsible enough to do online and take care of ourselves and do chores at the same time...its sad...I know. Anyways, the final result was online, so for this coming semester, classes would be held online. I’m actually really happy it was online because in some classrooms, tables are formed to make a circle, so if they wanted, it could be in groups. I doubt if we were to go to school they’d keep us like that but some classrooms are too small to have each person have their own table. May I remind you that each classroom contains about 30-36 students. Now I see some comments saying that the students won’t listen. Well that might be true for the wannabe’s and baddies and those who are just disobedient in general, but our school isn’t like that very much. I’m sure that the teachers would enforce procedures and rules as the yard duties patrol and assist students. Since, there are going to be new freshman and they most likely will still have that middle school vibe and attitude, there might be problems but yeah. I’ve heard that some schools are going to have some days physical and some days online. Ive also heard that some schools are going back and I feel really bad for them, especially the little ones because I know they can be brats and not listen. They learn with their peers, they’re hands on learners and they’re not that clean, so knowing that, I would love to hear how your schools are approaching this change.

If a person argues against virologists findings that this virus is worse than the flu, I know for sure I wont waste my time to educate them as they dont want to be educated but they want to be validated. Of course children will bring the virus to parents, grandparents, and older siblings and other family members. It’s all fun and games till someone you know dies from it. Do yourself a favor and go to school and study science specifically biology and microbiology. If not? Watch people perish and realize you were as wrong as it gets. Kids may not die, but older people that care for them very may will. By the way it’s spelled “bliss”.

@@nGUNNARp Not sure where you got those numbers. But here in the U.S. there was 34k deaths in the U.S. during the 2018-2019 flu season. So it lacks the same numbers as Covid (Covid has resulted in 165k deaths in the U.S.). Specifically, though, only about 200 children throughout the entire U.S. died of the flu last year...which is still sad. But it's a smaller number perhaps because pediatricians here in the U.S. remind parents to vaccinate their children for the flu every year during checkups. OR flu shots are mandatory depending on the state. If an approved vaccine existed and was properly distributed it would be a different story. Those getting terribly ill and dying don't all have known pre-exisitng conditions. NO mater how you look at it, scho9ols are going to be an experiment, a petri dish. I recognize the spirit of adapting as humans and as Americans, we are quite good at it, however these current circumstances dont require adapting, they require fixing the root cause, we need to fix what caused the covid pandemic to spiral out of control not adapt to it being out of control, we need to fix what cultural climate allows people to ignore science or facts or basic safety protocols that other countries have figured out and are safely returning to NORMAL school life not a crippled broken and dangerous approach that we are encouraging our teachers to go down.

TJ Maher ... I appreciate the kind words. I tested positive on April 4th for covid and had a pretty rough couple weeks. I know first hand that this virus is serious. I’m also a parent with one in high school and one in middle school. Very hard times we all are in. I understand the fear, but I personally feel the kids can go back safely with precautions and some kind of hybrid learning. Studies have shown that 100% remote learning for kids is extremely inadequate. My kids did that from March until June and it quite frankly was a joke. I want everyone to be safe, and I think we can find compromise to best serve the kids and be as safe as possible. Just my opinion

@@passiflora1014 How do you know, have you been in the classroom? Did you talk to the teacher? In fact, an effective teacher does as little as possible and let the children discover themselves the teacher is available if the students need him during class activities, his task more of monitoring that everyone is focused on the task and co-operating. How much top-down teaching is given, depends on the teacher. Student-lead learning is proven to be at least as effective as top-down teaching, and it also teaches the students social skills, leadership and *how to learn*. When I was a student even high school was 95% spoon-feeding and regurgitating information at exams - university was such an upheaval to most students, because self-teaching and critical thinking skills were suddenly expected from them.

What happened to 6 feet distancing? How are we going to deal with children who experience the death of a teacher or staff member? And, how are children going to deal with the death of two or three or more teachers and staff members in their school? Some children will be acutely aware of what they need to do to take precautions. I can’t help but think that some are going to internalize the death of a teacher and by that I mean that they are going to feel anxious and some may even feel responsible for their teacher’s death ( even though it is in no way their fault). We don’t know enough about COVID-19 yet. We could be jeopardizing our children and certainly we know that children can be carriers of Covid-19, even though they have absolutely no symptoms. What happens when children carry this home and there is a death in the family? I have not heard any of these issues discussed by anybody.

So, this idea of children going back in to school buildings gives me super increased anxiety! I’m saying that as a mom of children because I am a mother. I have children. My children are adults now, and my daughter is a teacher in middle school! We live together, out of convenience. And I am over 60 and have underlying conditions. 😩 Will see the death rate rise, from opening up schools. There is no statistical way we cannot see it! I am not a mathematician or a virologist, but I do possess common sense. I try to use it. as well! If you didn’t notice there were kids that got COVID-19 from being at day camp this summer. DT is a bully! Back in my younger years, I was a lunch lady. I didn’t put up with such nonsense In the lunchroom or on the playground. Somebody has to stand up for the children, right now! @J P Perhaos you are too stupid to realize that kids do not learn if they are tied to a chair hour after hour. Anyone who knows anything about education knows that children need to move to learn, to do hands on projects, group work and participatory activities. Obviously doing that online is very very far from Ideal, but it is better than nothing, and many teachers and parents have found creative ways to do these things even online. Being glued to a chair with a mask on and prohibited to touch your friends, having to be policed all day to insure that you follow rigid social distancing is not learning. It is a highly stressful situation that not only inhibits any kind of learning it is damaging beyond measure.

All I can do is vent, mourn, and ultimately be thankful for educators like this young lady. Thank you for documenting, perhaps now the public will see how ludicrous it is to be in the class, when the “experts” are saying 6 ft apart. People in ivory towers creating and executing ineffective policies. All the while we’re literally in the trenches everyday....if you have a teacher in your family, as a friend, or your child’s new teacher; give them the proper love and respect today, we are the heart of our society my friends! We create safe spaces so that the underdog can flourish and the brilliant ones learn to collaborate with others....instead we will be forced to teach everyone to be non-social individuals, even when we’re surrounded by peers. Please send out good intentions to ALL educators.

@@dccd4 How are you people so evil and why do you hate children so much? Children are suffering and dying from child abuse and suicide, are being emotionally and psychologically traumatized by social isolation from their friends and activities, and being denied a right to an education. Everyone knows Covid does not affect children. Do you keep your children chained in the basement and feed them water and porridge? Disgusting

@@The-Last-Pharaoh Question for you.... do you have 4 million cases in your country and 70,000 per day new cases? If you don't, respectfully, stfu. I know that's rude to say, but seriously, I'm really tired of people from countries experiencing a different case rate telling us that we'll be okay. Thouh I do appreciate the well wishes.

@@emilyuncry8933 clearly, you need to return to school. Once there, you can return and construct a proper sentence so that your meaning might become clear. Good luck. I'm sure I'm "annowing" but in point of fact, it does seem as though you just MIGHT be a bit of a troll, since your meaning is unclear. Bot perhaps?

lol imagine thinking that a bunch of bored kids crammed in a small building for 7 hours a day will follow all the safety precautions and not have physical contact. But honestly we shouldn't blame the kids for socializing and enjoying their childhood but instead blame the district for reopening schools.

As a parent with a child who has a legitimate diagnosis of ADHD...that isn’t how that works. He was like this since birth...he has a twin brother who doesn’t have ADHD, and it is night and day between the two. But we are a school at home family thru an online virtual public charter school so this has not effected my kids(I have four) education, other then field trips and library trips.
