¡Hola! That's a great question about stem-changing verbs! It can be a little confusing to know when the stem changes to "ie" and when it changes to "i." Here's a breakdown to help you understand: Stem-changing verbs: e > ie The most common type: This is the most frequent type of stem-changing verb, where the "e" in the stem of the verb changes to "ie" in most forms of the present tense. Examples: querer (to want) - quiero, quieres, quiere, queremos, queréis, quieren empezar (to start) - empiezo, empiezas, empieza, empezamos, empezáis, empiezan pensar (to think) - pienso, piensas, piensa, pensamos, pensáis, piensan Stem-changing verbs: e > i Less common: This type of stem change is less frequent. The "e" in the stem changes to "i" in most forms of the present tense. Examples: pedir (to ask for) - pido, pides, pide, pedimos, pedís, piden servir (to serve) - sirvo, sirves, sirve, servimos, servís, sirven repetir (to repeat) - repito, repites, repite, repetimos, repetís, repiten How to know which change to use Unfortunately, there's no easy trick to know which verbs change to "ie" and which change to "i." The best way to learn them is through practice and memorization. Here are some resources that can help: Flashcards: Flashcards are a great way to memorize verb conjugations. Practice exercises: The more you practice conjugating these verbs, the more natural they will become. Important note: In both types of stem-changing verbs, the change does not occur in the "nosotros" and "vosotros" forms. I hope this helps! Don't hesitate to ask if you have any other questions about stem-changing verbs or any other grammar topics. 😊

Hola, i deleted my previous message! It said something like, how can I determine whether a verb will be a stem changing verb or not or is is something I will pick up on as time passes by? Thank you.

Hi John, I wish I had a better answer for you but stem changers are simply stem changers. You just have to memorize them: there’s no rhyme or reason. Now, as you continue to practice the language you will start noticing that some things sound correct and others don’t. You are absolutely right, you will be picking it up as time goes by. Great question though! 👍🏽 keep up the good work!
