I'm a 10th-grade History teacher and have noticed a significant decline in student's abilities in my 7 years of teaching. The lockdowns caused irreparable damage to their social and scholastic skills. 90% of my students are at least 2 years below grade level in reading and writing. Edit: For those who replied that I am making excuses for students by blaming the COVID lockdowns, I'd like to clarify my POV. It was not the "lockdowns" per se. The biggest culprit of the learning loss was the online classes using Zoom and Google Classroom. This type of learning disproportionally affected students with learning disabilities or mental health issues. Besides a few students per class, most of them lost 2+ years of academics. Online learning is a joke, especially for younger students (below 11th grade). 75% of my students come from single-parent households as well. So while my students were home alone all day, their caregiver(s) were working multiple jobs to stay afloat and unable to monitor if their child was attending class. Most of the students were on social media or playing video games all day, instead of doing their classwork. They had no support from their parents/caregivers when they needed it the most. Thanks to all who commented though, I enjoy reading the variety of opinions on this issue!

I'll say this as a secondary education teacher: I've taught at schools of all levels, of all different backgrounds. Students who KNOW they're not the brightest try the hardest I've ever seen. Those are the kids that have NO IDEA how ahead of everyone else they are. Students that are "Oh! My school has advanced placement, a medical program, and an engineering department! I'm OBVIOUSLY a genius!" Report cards go home and we got BOMBARDED with parents saying "How can my GENIUS offspring be failing?!" We need to foster a system where dedication and work ethic is fostered. With America, our education system is like a factory. You would think my job is to teach. I would say that's about 35% my job. 60% of my job is to document proof of learning (which usually involves assigning work, designing tests, grading work, documenting behavior, documenting attendance, documenting whether students are using resources that we are legally obligated to provide, etc.). As a result, I have become damn good at paperwork. The current system is why I advocate for trade schools at a high school level (go ahead and look up CTE programs. They saved my brother from not getting a high school degree since he did not behave well in a classroom setting. Building Trades was his favorite "class"). Also... kids. We REALLY don't want to fill out behavior reports. It's a mess, requires a TON of work on our part, and makes us sad. We REALLY don't want to make your life hard. But we would like a LITTLE bit of effort. And for you not to be cruel to us or your classmates (And if you do not know your actions or words were bad, that's ok! Warnings are a thing! But you would be flabbergasted at how many times kids have tried to justify bullying, fighting, and hateful rhetoric).

As someone who was homeschooled, I do agree with you on homeschooling. My parents didn’t even do that much to educate me, they literally just got some textbooks and told me to read them. Then they decided that I needed to go to High School to develop my social skills. It was hilarious, I literally didn’t know much of the required information going in, and I still excelled in the classes. Like, the only reason I wasn’t the Valedictorian was because I graduated a year early and the District had a policy that the Valedictorian needed to attend school in the district for 4 years minimum. Homeschooling seems to be demonized in various circles, even though it shouldn't. I've worked children for a couple years now, and there has definitely been a drop with parent involvement with their childrens education. So many parents have said things like, "I don't want to FORCE them to do xyz" that has resulted their 10 year old barely able to read kindergarten books, or their 7 year old still wearing pull ups. So many parents have mentally checked out while being constantly distracted by their phones, social media, content, etc.
@sianais Жыл бұрын
Then when their kids hit a real roadblock instead of the many ignored speed bumps, they expect years of neglect to be fixed by a teacher who got handed off dozens of struggling kids because politians, administrators, and those parents themselves were more concerned with their children looking like they're progressing even if they need to be held back. They can't add properly, they can barely read, but they'll somehow magically be able to do multiplication, and do worded math problems, etc. in the grades they're not ready to enter. It's insane. If a teacher or school is failing your kid, why did you only start paying attention when it's so late? Parents need to ask themselves that because only blaming teachers won't solve the main reason this stuff was allowed to get so bad.

The teachers assigned to the high-scorer groups were different from those assigned to the lagging groups. The rate of teaching was much higher for the former group than the latter. This was done to ensure that a high performer's learning experience isn't affected by a mid-performer. It was also a way for the school to groom top performers for acceptance into top colleges and use this to promote their school in the district.

It's actually a common practice in some places in Europe, for example the terminology for it is "differentiation" (differenciálás) in Hungary. We mainly do it with foreign languages, for example those fluent in English will most likely be separated from those that just started learning it in 1st/3rd/9th grade. Even though our education system is also pretty bad, the teacher training itself is pretty solid in this regard. The teachers know, the students know and even the parents know that not everyone is equally talented in everything and some people will hold others back just by requiring more attention from the teacher in order to catch up, even though that attention would do talented students a lot more good. But both of them need that attention for different reasons, therefore it is easier and a lot less time consuming to separate students based on ability and have them taught in different classes according to their needs.

It's not every school, and in the grand scheme of things it might be pretty rare. Just because you went through school without experiencing it doesn't mean it doesn't happen. I failed to concentrate for more than 10 minutes, and I was usually put in an activity group with the other kids like me, so we didn't have to learn literacy or maths with the others. This was in the 90s. If we were taught the same stuff, but in a different format, we probably would've learned it easily.

I know people like to say ''oh its social medias fault'' or ''its because you're always on that phone/laptop/whatever else." But we completely forget that children are dumb and have no self control. Where are the parents? The IQ has dropped because the parents stopped parenting.
@VoiceOvaGuy Жыл бұрын
Social media is definitely bad, but you gotta watch your kids food too. So many chemicals, preservatives, dyes, additives in western food that it's actually low level poisoning them. Multiple food dyes that are banned around the world are allowed here, dyes that specifically reduce attention spans. Funny how most colored candy use those exact dyes. Horrible, downright non-existent 'parenting' doesn't help either. Broken single parent homes abound. There are MANY problems leading children to under develop these days.

As a 10th grader from Australia, my school uses a system that ranks kids based on academic prowess (academic honours, avid, general, SEP). This ensures students are lumped into core classes in accordance to their academic skill; meaning, you won’t find clowns without a circus. I’m from the academic honours class. Whenever I have to go to a general class, I feel my heart fill with dread; every cliche and clique imaginable exists in these general classes. The loud Cheeto girls, the sigma male chads, the mean girls, etc. Going from a class of calm and reason to a class of chaos; it genuinely feels like you have to fend for yourself sometimes. Like please, leave me in the corner in peace. I just want to work alone. I’m always amazed how people aren’t embarrassed with their behaviour. Flunking classes to roam around school, wagging and taking a day off, being a dick when the teacher is teaching; where is your shame? It’s clearly wrong but you clearly don’t care; you aren’t growing popularity, you’re growing testicles on your forehead. When they try to justify or explain their actions on the cusp of consequences, they prey on your exhaustion and you being fed up with them to the point that you devolve from logic and speak their language. Thanks for coming to my TEDtalk.

Yes!!! I took honors classes and all that, but I took10th grade regulars English to lighten the load... The amount of tomfoolery that would happen every day was indescribable. Kids were playing games on their chrome books, nobody was doing their homework or willing to pay attention. We were introduced to about 50 prepositional words at the beginning of the school year and there were still some students who only knew a couple by the end of the year. Every day objects were being thrown across the classroom, even when there were subs. Despite it being my easiest class, the environment made it way worse. Don't ever take a regulars/general class please... if you can.

I'm the same as you, I was also from the honors class. Every time we needed to share a bus with the general class for a study tour, they always said, 'Ew, honors class, not fun,' and we were just like, 'What the heck?' The weirdest thing was when I was grouped with the general class for a club initiation. They struggled with '5 + 5 + 23 + 23 + 30 + 30 + 30 + 15 + 15.' Then they asked me, 'Hey, you're from the honors class, right? Do you know the answer?' I answered 176, and they were like, 'Wow, honor students do have different brains,' and I was like, 'What?' Then, I taught them how to use multiplication.

Having kids out of school for up to two years in some places from Covid shutdowns definitely hurt a lot. Nobody learns well online and most students barely paid attention to video lessons or stopped participating altogether. Otherwise, yes it’s definitely from parents not helping their kids anymore and relying on the school to raise their kids. My mom was teaching me how to read and write before I even entered kindergarten cause she wanted to make sure I was ready and could do my best. School isn’t enough on its own because you don’t know if your kid is actually paying any attention when you aren’t there to tell them to.

Many kids learn well online. K12 is obviously proof of this, and I’ve learned more from ONE YEAR of online school than all my years in public school. Problem is not kids having to do online schooling. Again it falls on the parents. When I did online schooling my dad took every video game phone and all and locked it in his room until I was done school. My niece would call me while she was doing online schooling while she was playing roblox. Again, it 100% fully falls on the parents. K-12 online schooling is not only free but they genuinely have the resources and ability teach. For 7th grade they sent me a f-ing microscope and chemistry set. In public school we didn’t even have a microscope and chemistry was never taught in any of the grades, even in highschool we didn’t have microscopes or chemistry classes. I remember clearly that one of the assignments was literally to get a booger from your nose and examine it under the microscope to teach us about cells. Again, it completely falls on the parents to take responsibility.

Part of it IS the parents. But it's also the education system's fault too, I remember my cousin, who was a teacher who had to leave recently for maternal reasons, telling me that she was told to pass elementary school students who were reading at a first grade level (she taught third grade) in order to help the school get more funding, and in order to keep the parents off the school's back. I know that schools and school districts expect results, but there are children who need real help who are not giving the best results. Instead of the schools trying to help these children, they instead pass them because it's easier to pass than to be inconvenienced or lose funding. It's too bad, these children's futures are being thrown out the windoe.

It is January and this poor girl still cannot read and will most likely fail the standardized tests and repeat 3rd grade. I don't know why this poor girl was allowed to be promoted to 2nd or even 3rd grade. Yet, this little girl knows how to find "unintelligent content" on YT and Tik Tok. I totally blame the mom. My kid was struggling in advanced math. I pushed the schools, got him tutors. I did my research and got him tested for dyscalculia ( a math learning disability) Sure enough he had it. With the test reports,, he was able to have some accommodations, work super hard, work harder on his deficiencies and eventually did well in college. Many teachers rotated working full days, on one month, school hour days the next. Full day=5:45-6:45 School hour day= 7:00-4:30. We went along and sought outside tutoring. He was tested, and they said that he was well above grade level. Hmmm. We had a meeting with the principal, counselor, and teacher and agreed to have him evaluated and tested by a psychologist. One minute into the next meeting, the psychologist was screaming at the teacher. In some of his tests, he was at an 11th grade level. At one point, the principal asked us to step out....the walls couldn't contain the anger from the psychologist. When we returned, it was agreed to move him to another teacher and pull him out of the special classes. Our son is now in his early 30s and got his doctorate a few years ago. Where would he be if we allowed that teacher to control his future. It turned out that she couldn't deal with his questioning and intelligence. I left teaching in 2021,after lock downs, hybrid teaching, online classes and then back to in person. The change from 2018-2021 was so appalling that the students who were in 7th grade left as seniors. Most of them would say the exact same thing, " I still feel like I'm in 7th grade". That broke me. The biggest problem with our generation is the fact that our parents (not all of ours) didn't stress the importance of becoming a good/likable person. Some of us had family that cared and raised us correctly with discipline where it was needed. But even when i was like 12 i would question how some of these kids would turn out as parents, and i would see how their parents acted and really wonder. Why would teachers want to teach some of these kids? Not to mention most of the people in my generation were raised on electronics but personally i think the ones who got introduced to social media early turned out the worst. People just literally cannot put the phone down it's really sad and that it probably a contributing factor to the declining IQ, and the lowered attention span.

It's so easy to blame Gen Z and the internet, but as a student I think the main problem is the education system. We have districts lowering their standards just so everyone can graduate. School these days isn't even about learning anything. Their goal is to rush us through everything so we can move on to the next grade. Students see this and that's why you have so many lazy kids who don't want to try at all or pay attention. Our attention span is also ridiculously short. In my opinion, the education system should come up with something that can motivate and keep students interested in what they need to learn.

ChatGPT was only released in November 30, 2022, so if students are using it to write reports, they have not been doing so for long. Also, if they have learned on their own, what they need in regards for software, and then how to use that software to write a book report, they are not in the "slow group" in their class. My teachers as I got older really started to admire that, and my grades went up. I still work as hard as I can on my university assignments today. Teachers don't have time to indoctrinate anybody into anything. Most teachers wish they had that much discretionary tme. It's a nice fantasy. Separately, K-12 teachers rarely have any input regarding curricula, books, testing, standards, or much of anything else. Most educational decisions are made by administrators who taught for just a couple of years (if that) before leaving the classroom. Tbh, most school adminitrations treat teachers as if they have brain damage. This attitude is one more reason for the teacher shortage.

Now, yes i do not have a right to talk about my parents' education qualification, but they never joined me into any sort or coaching for studies and that's a dumb thing to do as i have had a consistent grade which were not great at all.

As long as you seek to learn, you will be okay. There are plenty of free online educational resources like Khan Academy, KZbin documentaries, fun animated videos on history, recorded lessons on any subject, and free textbooks and books PDF. You need to be consistent and disciplined in your study. The things you learn will be forgotten over time anyway, but what matters is how you can think. Learning is fun. Also, I would like to share the good news of Jesus Christ with you. I know this might sound off-putting, but you were created from the love of God and God truly does love, but you must be saved and born again through repentance from sins by the grace of God through faith. Why? Because we are born broken sinners who are evil and unrighteous to the core of our hearts. We can try to do good, but deep down our hearts are cold, calloused, and sinful. Imagine if all of your thoughts and actions were filmed and turned into a movie, would you even want to watch it? If it was played on a large screen and everyone you know is watching it, you would probably run out of there. I would do the same because I am ashamed of my sins and how broken I am. This may sound discouraging, but we have to recognize the truth that we are undeserving and wretched sinners. But, even so, Jesus died for all of our sins and through Him, you can be cleansed and find real living in God. Jesus does save and you will find Him when you seek Him with all of your heart. I know you're still young, but I hope God will reach your heart through this. Take care. God is love and God loves you.

My parents are teachers and the big problem that they see is that children are just passed off into the next grade, you can fail, but are then given so many empty opportunities to just get by per the "no child left behind policy". In Arizona (not sure how it is in other states), children can just keep retaking tests after test until they eventually pass and/or given so much extra points as encouraged by the administration. So with inadequate understanding from the previous grade, they can't keep up in their current grade but are still somehow able to go to the next grade due to the broken education system and it just keeps going. And the kids just end up finishing through middle school and high school with no real knowledge nor basic foundation for anything. In my home country, you have to retake previously failed classes and have to retake the whole grade if you don't pass. Age doesn't matter, skills and knowledge does. But here, it seems like they care more about making sure the kids are where they need to be in their academic career based on their age as in if you're 15, you SHOULD be in sophomore, even if you lack the foundation or knowledge. The kids being dumb is a symptom but not the main issue, the educational system here is SO broken that kids have no choice but to be dumb

Multiple factors are at play here and i think in the UK anyway , it all points to the 1970s. Because if you start propagnndising the population to not have children cuz muh career then eventually you will get people that are not thinking of the future in a "make a world that is better for my kids" and you start thinking in "i want to have a good life and who gives a fuck about the future cuz ill be dead" attitude. Well it can also be teachers. My dad had a terrible math teacher which he had for 3 years (as he was going up in the grades the teacher was also moving to) and the guy didn't even know the math he was teaching. If it wasn't for a tutor he would have had math !messed up for him

@@thedreaded As you might have gathered from my previous comment, some teachers have dedicated their careers to educating multiple generations, and a common sentiment among them is that Gen Z and Alpha are facing unique educational challenges. While it's easy to attribute this solely to teachers, it may be an oversimplification of the issue. It's undeniable that everyone has had a few mediocre teachers during their formative years, but it might be unfair to pin the blame on educators for the decline in intellectual abilities. Even renowned schools with exceptional teachers are grappling with these challenges. The prevalence of social media and the rise of more passive or less involved parenting are factors that cannot be ignored. They are conspicuous culprits that deserve consideration before pointing fingers solely at teachers.

I'm not saying all of them. Some problems can be parents and other can be teachers and others it could be social media or even just bad freinds@@xanderdelion

It's not always the social media excuse

Parents are forgetting they need to teach their kids how to read and write, how to do math and think in general as early as possible. I've noticed kids, nephews and cousins of friends learning to actually read for real at ages like 8, when most of the people we all knew back then started learning not soon after they could talk.
