you can really feel the way that they jam together. One persons rhythms inspire someone else to do something, and everyone listening begins to form ideas in their heads about how to meet what the last teacher just threw down. This session becomes a true jam because they're all ready to say yes to each others offers and let the rhythms lead into one another. Tap is percussion before it's dance, and to jam with percussion, you really gotta have that ear to feel out what people have been doing. This is nice.

I think two things are affecting the weight of their rhythm and the power they put into their moves. One, the floor isn't evenly resonant; it doesn't respond the same in the back as it does more in the centre to their shoes and movement, and a good bit of the jam happens farther up stage. Not only that, but they're surrounded on most sides by all of the other dancers who are there sitting on the floor, at the edges of the space. Even if the floor is super well designed for tap, and could produce sound very well, the presence of many bodies at the edges would dampen a huge amount of the sound, especially with how many of the folks are there. Because the sounds die very fast, it takes a good amount of attack on the dancers part to have the same clarity that a soloist might find on a much more empty space.

I mean, as a decade and a half long tapper I saw and heard footwork a bit more varied than just a bunch of “stomping”. But who knows, maybe the wide nuances and variety of rhythm tap aren’t for you. I try not to judge, to each their own.
