Here’s some tough love for transitioning teachers.
It’s not an employer’s job to see your value - it’s your job to show them.
Just because you have skills when leaving the classroom doesn’t mean a company will automatically recognize that you have them.
When transitioning out of teaching, you might feel everything from anger to relief, but one big worry is whether you’ll be taken seriously in a new role.
It’s easy to get caught up in the idea that you have a lot to offer (and you do), but in the corporate world it’s all about what value you bring to the company as a whole.
Corporate jobs want to see how you can physically solve their problems.
They don’t have time to figure out how your teaching experience translates to their needs on their own.
You need to show clear accomplishments, use statistics, and highlight all the skills you’ve gained on your resume and on applications.
In short, here’s what employers need to know:
1️⃣ What problems you can solve.
2️⃣ The impact you’ll bring.
3️⃣ How that impact will generate revenue or solve issues.
4️⃣ Examples of your successful work.
5️⃣ Why you’re a good fit.
It’s up to you to show your value and you need to make it clear why they should see it that way.
