We’re feeling nostalgic recalling the rollercoaster ride that is a school assembly. Brace yourself for Tell's ridiculously hilarious take on students' unionizing, and Gabe's priceless narration of a middle school anti-drug assembly gone very wrong. Not quite the inspiration we were looking for.
In the spirit of safety (and hilarity), Lauran introduces us to the most memorable fire safety magician, who taught kids about safety while pulling a rabbit out of his... fireproof hat? We also relive the terror of the legendary fundraising assembly skits. And let's not forget Tell's revelation about grade inflation, sparking a debate filled with wit and sarcasm.
We're also applauding our heroic students in this episode. From a 7th grader taking over a bus when the driver faints, to a brave class handling their teacher's unexpected fall, these kids give us hope for the future.
Just when you think it can't get any crazier, we cap off the episode with a story about a school with a very unwanted guest, pretending to be a substitute teacher. We promise it's even wilder than it sounds!
Join us for a jaw-dropping trip down memory lane in the world of school assemblies. We assure you, it's an episode you won't want to miss!

When I was a senior we had a sub that was like 80 but was an Olympic swimmer back in the day....some punk was being disrespectful to him calling him names and everything and told the guy there was no way he could beat him in a swimming race. It was decided that the two would race 30minutes before school ended that day. The whole school heard about it and all classes literally stopped early that day to have an impromptu assembly to watch the race. We thought it was the coolest thing our school had ever done. Needless to say the 80+ Olympic swimmer kicked that kid's ass in the race and the kid was put in his place...they shook hands afterwards and the 2 got along from then on. We weren't a small school either. It was insane.

I taught in Southeast Asia for a few years (not in a big city, in the middle of the country) and we would have ALL sorts of wildlife come into the classroom- mainly reptiles etc. but because we also lived so close to a couple of farms we'd sometimes get farm animals that would wander over (like chickens, goats) and since most of the students lived in town and commuted out to the school they were JUST as weirded out as the teachers were whenever it'd happen. Probably the biggest WTF moment I had with that was when a stray cat came into my classroom mid lecture and gave birth to two kittens right then and there. (Actually it was really sweet because I fostered the mom and babies for a bit and then one of the students whose mom is a veterinarian ended up adopting all three- I still get photo updates about them!)

Having a microphone in class not only saves your voice and the energy level that you use throughout your day. It is also can be an access tool for people who are deaf and hard of hearing. As someone who is hard of hearing and is an educator in a hearing school it is the most beneficial to create access for everyone!

My oldest daughter decided in 5th grade that she was not going to do homework. Our school district has a 90% homework policy. I battled with her the first three marking periods and at the end of that period, I flat out told her that she would be repeating 5th grade. Trust me, when the problem started, I offered all of the support she could possibly need. It was the best thing that happened to her, because she learned that there were consequences for every decision made!

The only anti drug assembly I remember having was one where the DA taught us about Good Samaritan laws and that if someone’s needs help you can call 911 and won’t be prosecuted I don’t know if they exist in all states but that was lifesaving information that I wish was more common knowledge to kids that age

The bus driver story: bus drivers in my county have “emergency helpers” that we have 4 kids on our routes that help with evacuations and we teach them “hey if something happens to me, here is how to stop the bus safely, here is my emergency phone, and this is what you gotta do from there” for that very reason.

Columbus City teacher here (& I've definitely been in some of those crazy decrepid buildings that we just had a strike over), but my biggest WTF moment was the day my vice principal came in and pulled me out of class. She was so serious that I thought somebody had died. It turns out a food delivery truck had snagged an electrical wire and pulled a telephone pole down onto a row of cars (including my own). I did get to see the security footage. The driver never stopped... just kept driving! 😮

I graduated from HS in 1998 in a Missourian suburb of Kansas City. (There were over 500 graduates in my class.)We had SADD; students against drunk driving. During Red Ribbon Week they’d have a completely trashed car parked in the lawn in front of the school that had a sign in front of it “His car didn’t survive; neither did he.” Then on Friday then one day of the week, they’d bring in several cars that were smashed and totaled set up in our back parking lots. Our student council would have fake blood all over them, half hanging out of them. Basically, it was supposed to be a drinking drinving accent with OUR friends the ones that were “hurt and or dead .” They’d bring ambulances and fire trucks, taking them away in stretchers. For a high school kid this really kinda messed with my gears. But I still remember, so it was effective.

I really remember the fundraiser assemblies in elementary. Because I was in charge of one. And yes, I was in 4th grade at this point. I had cancer and had shirts for chemo, so it’s really easy for kids, and wanted to give them to other kids in the hospital. So, I have a flyer to my nurse and she talked to the principal, and we made a video to share on all social media for all schools in the district. Then I got to skip gym and make a speech, and I talked in an assembly for all 6 grades, k-5.

I remember I middle school they had a 2 bathroom passes a semester rule or something like that. It was a written thing in our agendas we had to carry around and a teacher would actually have to sign it and once your two were done, most teachers refused to allow any exceptions. It was a nightmare if you had your period or something and at that age, we were all new to periods so two bathroom passes was awful. Thankfully most teachers would let us go every now and then even after the two passes were up. But some of them, I feel like were taking out the fact that they couldn't go to the bathroom out on us. They should build all schools like they do young elementary and put a half bath in each classroom. Yeah, that might be tricky for privacy for high schoolers, but this way anyone in the classroom could go pee and it wouldn't be a whole fiasco.
@TheSuburbanBase
@TheSuburbanBase Жыл бұрын
My schools didn't have that rule, but some teachers were jerks about the bathroom. On the flip side one lady in high school didn't want us to ask, and we just couldn't do it.

My classroom was directly below the nurses office. A little guy was living in a tent with his mom and didn't have access to a shower, so the admin set up a shower schedule for him. I went to get my 3rd graders and came back to rain in my classroom. The pipes weren't connected in the ceiling, so water everywhere.

In my senior year of high school, a ceiling in a classroom in the upper hall collapsed, luckily on a weekend when no one was there. Huge, thick chunks of the ceiling completely smashed desks. The solution? 2x4s were placed in the hallway to brace the ceiling. We had to gingerly step around them the rest of the year. A few years later, the school was demolished because it would have cost more to fix than start from scratch. The movie theater complex that replaced it built a facade that looked like the front of the old school since it was such an old and beloved school, so that was nice.

In 2004, the elementary school next to the 6-12 grade school where I taught, was destroyed when Hurricane Charley passed over central Florida. That school held classes in a local church from September to January of that school year. Literally, the 4th and 5th grade were in the sanctuary with rolling boards for the teachers to use and no wifi.

Weirdly, I had to learn to hold my pee while I was a Custodian working at a college. Thankfully, I didn't have to call anyone to take my place while cleaning. But, the reason I had to hold it so often was because of Timing. Students coming and going. I couldn't run the vacuum in the mornings. I had to wait for the communal bathrooms to be empty before I could block it off to clean. The common areas sometimes had to be cleaned because of student events that we find out about 30 min prior. Once the semester was over, we could take our time, it was nice.

One time, they held a court hearing about a DUI at school in our auditorium. Our class was notorious for being obnoxious during assemblies, so ALL the teachers and staff laid into us ahead of time that we could not misbehave in any way shape or form or we would get detention. It was supposed to be a “don’t drink and drive” scare us straight thing, but the dude that was on trial was an adult, and I don’t think he got a harsh sentence.

Trigger Warning! Sui*+de I was a Lunchtime yard duty at the time and the school I was working at got out early every Wednesday. One Wednesday as I get home I get a phone call that there was an “incident” and the staff had to come back. What happened was on the bus route one of the people in the neighborhood had stood on the sidewalk and had used a shotg*n on himself; and most of our students saw this! We had counselors in for the next few days and we were asked if we could walk students home. It was sad and traumatizing for everyone.

I was in elementary in the 80s, graduated in 99. With that said, when I was going through school if you failed you got held back. If you got 0 it was a 0 no ifs ands or buts about it. Some teachers offered extra credit to everyone not just the ones who missed or refused to do assignments. This was also before computers or any type of electronics were in the classroom. Computers were just getting put into schools my senior year of high school and cell phones were just starting out. The most that teachers dealt with were notes being passed in school, hand written cheat sheets ect.

8:00 We had a “secret pooper” a few years ago in the boys bathroom, who would poop in places in the bathroom that were not the toilet (floor, urinal, etc). After a few weeks of reminders at staff meetings to look out for kids regularly out to the bathroom for extended periods, or trying to have admin in the hall to watch for kids leaving the bathroom, our admin had enough. The next Wednesday morning, our morning announcement was nothing but a 15 minute lecture on bathroom behavior. On the loudspeaker, across the entire building. What the parents who were in classrooms at that moment must have thought was going on, I don’t know.

OMG Tell! Grew up in Alaska, but we had a skit/dance anti drug assembly that was done to the song ‘Turn around’ when I was in High school, high schoolers dressed up in black shirts and jeans that were facing backwards and and then there was a girl, her boyfriend, friends and parents. It started out that the girl gets in a fight with her friends, boyfriend and parents then when the first chorus starts she turned around the first black shirted person (tobacco was on the front of the shirt) and hugged them. She hugged them a couple times then turned another black shirt around (alcohol) and hugged them and as the song progressed she ended up turning all the shirts (each one another drug) around and hugging all of them multiple times. Then they created a circle around her that she was trapped inside, her friends and family finally pull her out of the circle and the black shirts line up again. The last virus she goes up to each of the black shirts and turns them backwards again. People always give me weird looks when I tell them about it!!! But every time I hear that song I think of the skit.

Very interesting to hear how the random noises cross international boundaries. I've heard all those noises to this year!

So I'm a student right now and I would just like to say that it is an art form to be able to hold it for the whole day after drinking like five bottles of water throughout the day

My middle school english teacher always told people that were scared of failing because they worked slower than others and they were afraid of zeros "I don't give zeros, zeros kill." She would put a 50 in as a placeholder until they redid/turned in their assignment. To be fair, I go to a school was 300 people in the whole district and she had ample time to help people that needed it.

I used to hate taking my Advisory class to school assemblies. I used to get heart palpitations. I am so glad to see teachers representing us and our experiences. During the dark days of the Great Recession and school reconstitutions and evaluating teachers by student test scores, I never thought we would be in this situation where now teachers are desperately needed. I have to laugh when I see districts offering relocation bonuses.

Oh man i feel that. Like I WAS that kid that just couldn't bring myself to do anything. Granted my ADHD made it hard for me to find the motivation to do anything until the very last minute, but yeah. To all my former teachers, my bad.

A few things for Lauren: 1. I think you're thinking od SADD which when we were in school meant Student's Against Destructive Decisions. 2. The comedian your thinking of is John Mulaney with the bit about the horse babysitting your dog. 3. I grew up in Beaver Falls which is super close to East Palestine on the PA side. Ever hear of it? Great Show to all!

The Total Eclipse of the Effect of Drugs performance was big in central Texas. I "performed" it in high school in 2006. More than that one dance move though. And yeah, i was in what we called RISE, and also smoking weed.
