Very good video. I currently work for EF in a very VERY small city so my experience is a bit different IE I am literally the only foreign teacher across both campuses here so I only ever interact with locals, but I'm very curious to know the experience of other foreign teachers since I've never met one. However, like you said the staff are very helpful and the work atmosphere is super easy going. Outside of weekends it's a pretty easy job and you never have to worry about finances or having a roof over your head. Plus the company managed to get me into China during the peak of the zero-covid policy... no easy feat! Personally, my reason for moving was to improve my Chinese and sit HSK5, and my boss and colleagues are more than willing to help me with my practice even DURING office hours, so I guess it wholly depends on what you want to get out of moving to China.

The problem with EF is each individual city and even school within that city are run by different people so it makes the experience completely different!! So it really is a toss up.

I felt like EF under paid and over worked its teachers. But I do think its a good way to get a foot in the door and to get a feel of a country and then network with other teachers when you arrive. I magically got a 6 month contract years ago and 6 months was enough 😅.
@SheRunTheWorld Жыл бұрын
I do agree that they under pay compared to the other programs and schools but since they help you so much with the arrival and set up I definitely think it’s worth it like you said to get your foot in the door and then after your contract switch to another company! I never felt overworked tho I loved my year. But each center and each city is so different that’s the hard part😅😅

Thanks! Honestly you can try looking online, but it’s hard to do it that way. The easiest way is once you’re already in China you’ll meet people and hear of schools/opportunities. So I think EF is a great way to get over to China and get set up, and then you can start looking for better opportunities once you’re there. Also, if you have a LinkedIn make sure to change your location/job to being in China cuz as soon as I did that when I moved, I got so many people emailing me job opportunities at schools around China

Wow this was super helpful! I just had my second interview today and it went well. I told my interviewer I wouldn't mind going to Beijing, but Chongqing sounds like an easier transition. Should I email her now and ask for this city instead? Also, a my main concern I had were financial matters since I had a few responsibilities here in the U.S. to take care of such as credit cards and my car note. Would know if bills could be put on hold or will I be able to take care of my small bills from China? Thank you for your help!

Yay I’m so glad! Yeah I would email her now and let her know before she writes up a contract offer. I will definitely say a Tier 2 city like Chongqing, Xi’An, or Kunming will be a lot more affordable and allow you to save more money! I’m not sure if you can place the bills on hold. But I had student loans to pay off, so you can easily send money back from your Chinese bank account to your US one. Either through PayPal (super easy and fast, but expensive), having a local Chinese friend send it through AliPay (very cheap & convenient), or a bank wire transfer (cheapest way, but a long process!) I had my Chinese friends sending money on AliPay for me every so often.

Hey! Don’t be nervous! I’d say the main thing that they’re looking for is just confidence and the way you’re carrying yourself. Most people who go to EF China have never taught before, but they’re trying to see if your personality would be a good fit for a classroom. So just don’t seem too shy & timid, and you’ll do great! Typically they’ll ask you some situational questions like “can you tell me a time where you had to deal with conflict” or “how would you handle a student acting poorly in your class” etc. Even if you haven’t had any teaching experience, you can easily just describe a situation you’ve had in work, school, or life and then say “this would apply in the classroom as well because...” that way they know you’re able to handle those classroom situations! Don’t stress too much :)

What are the hours like everyday?
@SheRunTheWorld4 жыл бұрын
Typically you have 2 consecutive weekdays off. And the other 3 weekdays you’ll work from about 2pm- 8:30 depending on the school. From 2-5 is just office/planning time, from 5-8:30 is class time (3 classes: 5-6, 6:15-7:15, 7:30-8:30). But let’s say you only have class from 5-7:15, then usually you can leave right after you won’t have to stay until 8:30. And on Saturdays and Sundays you typically work 10am-6:15pm, and you have to stay the whole time regardless of how many classes you have.
@AmyLovesYou4Ever4 жыл бұрын
SheRunTheWorld i read somewhere that the school provides you with the curriculum or lesson plans for us to follow, is this true? because if it is, what are we doing during the office/planning time then? also, if i do have a class only from 5-7:15 and i leave early, so i still get paid for a regular 2-8:30 shift or will i be paid from 2-7:15? and can you explain why we would have to stay the whole time on weekends? sorry for asking so many questions lol
@SheRunTheWorld4 жыл бұрын
@@AmyLovesYou4Ever they do provide lesson plans for you. They’re very long and detailed. So typically you use that office planning time to read through the lesson plans, print out/gather materials and make adjustments- the longer you teach, the more you typically like to use your own games and ideas instead of theirs. It’s also really helpful to print out your lesson plans and all materials during the weekday office time for all your weekend classes because you usually won’t have any time to do it on the weekend. Also during office/planning time you can occasionally have meetings and trainings.
@SheRunTheWorld4 жыл бұрын
also, you get paid the same no matter what. So some people may leave early on Tuesdays while you work until 8:30, but vice versa on Thursday’s or whatever it may be. So it’ll all even out, and your paycheck will always remain the same regardless of how many classes you teach. And you have to stay the whole time on the weekends regardless if you have class because there are a lot more things that teachers need to do on the weekends. You might have to do a demo lesson (for potential students), activity (current students can pay to do extra activities like cooking, making crafts, etc), or conduct placement tests for potential future students. So basically even if you don’t have back to back classes on Saturdays and Sundays you will be scheduled to do other things, or need to be in the office to be available if other things pop up.

Aw good I’m so glad! Yeah my sister is in the same boat actually! I don’t think anyone really knows 😢 they keep changing the visa requirements and everything, so it makes it take longer. She was hired in august 2020 for a February start and still hasn’t had any word on when she’ll actually be going even though she finished all her visa documents 🥺

Is there 6 month contracts?
@SheRunTheWorld3 жыл бұрын
As far as I know, there’s not. My sister recently was hired by EF Chongqing and it was also a minimum 1 year contract. It’s because they pay for your flights, visa, and hotel when you arrive so they don’t want to spend all that money for someone to only work there for 6 months! BUT, I will say that they are really desperate for teachers right now, so you never know. You might be able to negotiate that!

this video was so helpful! Thank you! Quick question though, for the people that you heard about that left after 2-3 months because they hated it, do you know how that works? Does EF somehow "cancel" your residence/work permit? Can you ask to transfer to a different center? I'm worried I might hate my experience at my designated center haha
@SheRunTheWorld3 жыл бұрын
Glad it was helpful! Yeah so I had a friend who hated her center and was able to switch, then she ended up liking it. And then I had a couple people who just left instead of switching- and yes EF cancels your work permit and you have to pay EF back for your visa & flight costs I wouldn’t be too worried though. As long as you’re a good employee and don’t have problems with your boss, I’m sure you’ll enjoy it!

Did you teach children or adults? If you taught children, how difficult was it to manage a classroom? Are they large classes? (over 20 people) My biggest worry is just that I havent had to manage/teach large groups of young children, and that classes of kids can be rowdy or difficult to handle.
@SheRunTheWorld3 жыл бұрын
Children! Ages 3-6 you’ll have max 8 students, and ages 6-15 you’ll have max 18 I believe. It was very easy to manage the classroom- you just have to set up your classroom rules, expectations and reward systems from the start. I found overall the students were pretty easy to handle

Hi! I an a little skeptical of this company after reading horror stories! I’m coming from the U.K. and have been offered an offer for interview - but not sure about this now that I’m hearing of these conflicting reviews.
@SheRunTheWorld3 жыл бұрын
That’s the thing, it’s really hard because each center is completely different. So you can’t say it’s a great company or bad company because it’s just too big to compare. I personally loved my experience in Chongqing- I had a great boss and awesome coworkers. I wasn’t over worked at all. But I have heard other centers and cities where people didn’t feel the same. So it’s hard to know until you’re there!

@@zetlander8265 no the interview is pretty easy! Just prepare some answers to some possible situational questions like “tell me about a time you dealt with conflict” and questions like that. May I please ask you something sensitive? I will delete the comment after your response. I received an offer for 13 667 CNY gross monthly in a city, 256 000 CNY/year with medical insurance. Do you think it’s good offer? Your response will be highly appreciated
@SheRunTheWorld Жыл бұрын
13667 is the standard offer for a teacher with no experience, that’s what my bf got. I had teaching experience so I started as a tier 3 teacher at 15667. As long as you’re in a T2 city (not Beijing, Shanghai, Shenzhen) you’ll live comfortably on that salary no problem ☺️ and at your 5 month review you’ll get a pay raise!

I have been teaching for sixteen year. I have worked in Russia for eight years and China for six. I worked for many language centers in both countries. I need my head read EF in Russia would no pay us so after the third month I left and so did other teachers. China we got paid and the materials are good but they will work you like a dog. Things have changed they hire anything that looks foreign regardless of how you speak and their management is terrible. The people that we see coming in to this industry do not want to work it is a holiday a lot of them do not like kids or teens. The learning centers are a franchise like Burger King or KFC the people who buy them have no clue about teaching and do not want to know. It is all about money nothing more. Then there is this idea that anyone can be a teacher I have met people here with the IQ of a rock and they have a degree! I have had better conversations with a glass of water. Do not go if you are not serious and have a school with the right people in place to train you.

Thanks so much for this amazing video! It’s helping me ease my nerves with my upcoming interview. I did have one question that I can’t seem to find the answer to - did you choose Chonqing or do they place you in whatever city they need you the most? I had mentioned to my recruiter that I was interested in Shenzhen but, considering the fact that I’d like to save and continue to pay student loans, it might not be the best fit. I’m just wondering if I can make any changes after. Thanks again for posting!
@SheRunTheWorld3 жыл бұрын
So glad it was helpful! So actually great question. It can be either. For me, they just chose Chongqing for me and I was ok with it. But my recruiter said if I didn’t want to be there, I could ask to be switched! My other friends in CQ all asked their recruiters to be placed there! So yeah if you wanna pay off loans don’t do shenzhen for sure! Go to a tier 2 city like Chongqing (I’m biased lol), Xi’An, or Kunming. I have a couple friends who just transferred from CQ EF to Kunming EF and love it just as much!
