The opportunity to educate, teach, and inspire is one of the greatest blessings of the musician. As silly as it may seem for the Clearwater crew to drive halfway across WA state just to hold an hour-long clinic at a school whose band program is just starting to blossom, experiences like this get kids involved, form connections, and ultimately change lives. Enjoy some fun footage from our trip from Spokane to Moses Lake as I recount the experience of helping kids make their first toots on brass tubes.

Getting to work with students in their first moments of learning an instrument is such a special experience. The "Aha!!!" moment with the kids is the best feeling as a teacher

Great to hear you've been teaching. You're a good player with a lot of knowledge to back that up. I love talking trumpet and cornet and mouthpieces but my real passion is for conducting, teaching and music therapy. I realised I was not quite cut out for a performance degree but still wanted to pursue something musical, so I took a conducting course where I had time to reflect and grow as a musician and person. It was a really good experience and opened me up to a lot of things I never even thought about.

To tell you the truth I don’t teach many regular/weekly type private lessons. But I really do enjoy getting to do little sessions or clinics like this. In my time at GU I’ve led a lot of small ensemble rehearsals and sectionals, and I really enjoy getting more of an outside perspective on the music making process. Not to mention how happy it makes me to see little kids make their first sounds on an instrument. I too am not much of a performer or competition player. Glad you were able to channel your passion for music into a healthier avenue for yourself! It is oftentimes the experiences we have outside the concert hall, not in it, that truly shape us as enjoyers and stewards of our craft.

I get what you mean. A lot of people nowadays don't look at band and think that that's what I want to do. But that's why when you find those kids who do see that and want that you've got to cherish it You've got to do everything. You can to help make that dream a reality.
