My cousin wanted help helping her daughter learn how to read during the school closure. I know this video is not very professional, I just wanted to get this help out!
My usual focus is on weight loss and healthful eating and living, but I am a tutor and until the school closures of COVID-19 I was a teacher in a specialty program for homeschooled children and want to offer help during these hard times.
SWR - Spell to Write & Read by Wanda Sanseri swrtraining.com/about-us/
Free app for phonogram sounds: look up “All About Reading” the app has a bee icon. The official SWR one is not free and sadly, in my opinion, a poor audio quality. But if you buy the CD from the above link it’s of great quality.
Just made this google doc to compliment this lesson: docs.google.com/document/d/1X... If you notice an error, let me know.

I am. I will update how my week 11 on Maximum Wright Loss has been! I plan to make a video today. I have filmed 3 x and always had something happen while filming...if it wasn’t a child, a pet, technology issues (like in this video it gets cut off at the end when someone calls and it makes my phone camera stop recording😣 But I’m determined to record it all again today!!

Would love to see how you apply the writing part into a lesson when working with beginning readers.

With SWR they need to learn how to write each letter of the alphabet at the start -but don’t have to master them to start learning the sounds (phonograms). You can say a sound and have them try to write the letter they hear and you can review the sounds if they are wrong (if you say the sounds of “C” -hard and soft, but they write a K or an S they are showing they heard a sound that matches one of the sounds C can make, but not both & then have them write the C and say the sounds...I like to do two Cs to practice each sound). If by writing you mean words and sentences, I love that SWR teaches words right away that you can make sentences with and practice reading and writing them!

So I’m curious - is the word “was” still considered a rule-breaker by SWR? The “a” doesn’t say any of those sounds at 10:55. Another word with the same sound is “Adam” - the 2nd “a” makes that same sound as the “a” in “was” I’m just trying to understand how it all fits together! Thanks

I am not an expert, but I think the a in was is just being said like the "uh" sound we often say for a -like "It is a dog" is said like "It is uh dog." For me the second a in Adam sounds like was's a and I am sure it's just our not so accurate way of pronouncing the words -like how pen and pin are said like homophones, but they really are not, if pronounced correctly. Sorry I took forever to reply. I have been beyond busy and actually never checked until I was needing to reference this video for something today.

I'm looking at the srw for my kids. I bought Christian Liberty Press workbooks, crafty classroom and teacher pay teachers for more practice because my kids are loving worksheets should I not use these with my kids?

I’m not sure what all those contain. Consistently going over phonics and applying them systematically (like SWR does) is the best way-in my opinion. Feel free to ask more.

What about ink? How do you explain the e sound??

Jennifer McLain I was trained to say to the student “think to spell [short i sound]nk.” Many words we say differently than they are spelled. Often it is because we lost the original pronunciation, but kept the original -or just an “outdated” spelling. Some examples are “one” and “of” and “your.” Does this help?

When you are pronouncing Mac…how do they know you are using the first sound of “a”.

I apologize for not keeping up with these videos and for not checking on comments. I have been the one to write a comment and wait ages to never get a reply. I just teach kids to use the first sound and if it does not make sense try the second, then the third, etc. as applicable. Soon after kids get started you can go into open and closed syllables, but it's perfectly fine to tell them that at the start of a lesson "you will only use the letter A's first sound /a/ for today's words." Less is more when it comes to explaining to littles, unless they ask they probably will tune out if you get too deep into the reasons. Does that make sense? *I suggest showing a list of words like: Mac, hit, hop, den, pen and ask them what they notice. Things you can ask if they are lost and don't know what you are looking for them to notice/say: "How many letters do you see in each word?" Have them count if needed. "What kind of letter is in the middle?" What kind do they all start/end with (middle: vowels, start/end: consonants). Help them piece together their own understanding that C-V-C words have the first sound of the vowel. So later on when stuck on a C-V-C word you can ask, "Is there 3 letters?" and if needed, "Is the middle letter a vowel?' and if still needed, "consonant, vowel, consonant words mean I should try the first sound of the vowel..."
