Teaching your horse to accept fly spray

Like many things that we do with horses, you first should teach them how to do it. In this clip, I teach a horse how to stand still while getting fly sprayed.

I use an empty bottle of fly spray that I filled with water (so I don’t waste any valuable fly spray). I do exactly what you showed in this video, have been for quite sometime and it has ALWAYS worked with both young and old horses!

My grandmothers friend uses skin so soft, original scent bath oil from Avon. It's cheaper and it works better than fly spray. I have yet to try it, but you can delute it with some water if you want. She said it works ten times better!

Maybe I didn't fully understand the principle of desensitizing yet but I have a problem with this particular exercise. If I teach my horse that the fly spray goes away when he stands still, how does this go together with the everyday practice of spraying him while he is not moving? What I did to make my horse except fly spray is start spraying a little bit at a part of his body, where he is less reactive, give a positive feedback if he didn't move, spray a bit further, positive feedback and so on unless I can spray the whole body. From my understanding, my method makes more sense from a horses point of view, but again, maybe I missed a point here...

Wow. I’ve been trying to teach my bolshy rising 4 mare cob to accept fly spray for over a year. She would try to crush me and all sorts but nothing worked. I watched this video 2 days ago and I am coming back to say a massive thank you. I took her in the school today and in 30 minutes she was standing like a dream. Even when I took her back to her stable to do actual fly spray, she just munched away on her hay with no flinching what so ever. Thank you so so much. You have been a god send with this advice. If you don't have audio it is a issue with your computer not youtube or this video. Check your audio settings and consider upgrading to windows 7. XP is obsolete and not supported anymore.

What would you suggest for my mare? She sets back when tied, she has sometimes reared up when doing it. She has done it in multiple places but the most common (happens nearly every time) is when she's tied up at the washrack. I had someone tell me to use chains or whip her when she does it, etc. but I just think there has to be a better way than that. We don't have a "patience tree" so to speak either so we can count that out. Here recently I have just been having someone hold her while washing and soft tying while saddling and everything else but I'm well aware that is not a permanent fix and it's not actually working. She still moves all over the place while being held or soft tied. I pour the spray in a little bucket and sponge it on. I hate breathing in spray anyway.

This guy knows a lot about horses, but not so much about people. Passive-aggressively making fun of a woman because she was inadvertently teaching her horse to move away from fly spray is pretty rude, especially when she's standing right there. Come on mate, you're better than this. Don't bully people from a position of power.
