Teal and Tattered Journals

4 жыл бұрын

Are you struggling with making a good, sturdy journal cover and binding your pages into it? Tune in and let's make a journal together!
Hi Guys!
Welcome to the second part of my tutorial in which I am showing you how to make a hard cover book that can be used as a journal or an ephemera holder!
In the first part of this mini series, we made our fabric hard cover. I showed you how to make it durable and sturdy and shared some of my favorite tips and supplies. Here's the link if you have not seen this video yet!
kzbin.info/www/bejne/lWnUcp9jn9ageNE
Today we are going to do a few things - some finishing touches on our cover (book corners and a metal book plate), gluing in end pages, adding pockets to our papers (for those of you who are making an ephemera holder, like I am) and finally we will bind our signatures using a three hole pamphlet stitch.
We will go through all the steps together and at the end of this video you should have your journals or ephemera holders ready to use! :)
As I did under the previous video, I am listing all the measurements and supplies for you to reference, as well some time stamps in case you want to jump to a particular section of the tutorial.
Hopy you will enjoy and find it useful! Let me know what you think :)
Hugs,
Martyna
MEASUREMETS:
My current ephemera holder:
- 26 cm or 10 1/4 inches - length of the cover
- 16,5 cm or 6 1/2 inches - width of the cover
- 7,5 cm or 3 inches - width of the spine
The book we are making today:
- 21 cm or 8 1/4 inches - length of the cover
- 15 cm or 5 3/4 inches - width of the cover
- 3 cm or 1 1/4 inches - width of the spine
SUPPLIES:
- 2mm bookboard or heavy card for the cover - two pieces cut as per the measurements above
- lighter card for the spine - cut as per the measurements above
- fabric for the cover
- piece of cardstock to reinforce the cover on the inside
- PVA/wet glue
- paint brush, water and paper towels
- 1 piece of 12x12 paper for the end papers
- 4 pieces of 12x12 paper for the pages
- vellum for pockets
- needle, awl and linen thread for the binding
TIME STAMPS:
02:22 putting a book plate on the front cover using metal brads
09:55 adding pockets to our end pages and gluing them in
23:33 creating signatures and adding pockets to hold ephemera
41:15 binding our signatures into the cover using a 3-hole pamphlet stitch
53:10 adding metal book corners

What I did differently... I made a 6 .25 w x 9.25 cover. I added 6 heavy card stock pages, each sewn i. Separately for 6 single signatures. I used plastic I bought by the yard for the pockets

Thank you so much for making this tutorial!! I saw someone with one of these types of books and do wanted to learn how to make one. Your video showed up within a week of me wanting to start looking for tutorials. The fabric you used on this cover is absolutely gorgeous. I really need to find this fabric here in the States. Well, maybe once we are able to visit our local craft stores again. I just purchased you celestial digital kit, as I’d like to make something with your beautiful designs. Would you ever consider showing us how to make digital kits? I’ve looked and not really found anything that’s detailed enough. I’m sure there’s a lot of us crafters who’d love to see the process. Thanks again for all the wonderful videos. Hugs 🤗 from New Jersey

Hi Martina, thank you for your designs, ideas and tips. I would like to ask you about a filing cabinet that you show already finished in the second 00:42, at the beginning of the video. There you have not used vellum and although it may not be so beautiful I think I prefer it that way because it provides more resistance and greater visibility. The question is, what material did you use? is it acetate? or, what is it ? Thanks for everything.

Following on... I did use laminate which was quite thin at 80 microns and my sewing machine coped with it very well, including 250gsm card sandwiched between.

I actually made pockets with laminated sheets before when I ran out of Acetate. I didn‘t use any cardstock or paper between it - only the laminating film itself. I simply ran it through the laminator. Worked quite nice and is an alternative if you don‘t have anything else😉. So far I didn‘t use a sewing machine to attach them, though. Glue worked well, same as double-sided tape😊
