This really is one of the funniest damn movies ever filmed, right up there with Airplane, Blazing Saddles, Naked Gun, or Top Secret. It's hard to pull off a movie so stupid that it's a work of genius, but the writing, soundtrack, and visual spectacle are all top-level.

Ladies, the guys who did this are named Matt Stone and Trey Parker. They did south park but they also have a filmography. Cannibal: the musical, Orgazmo (which is about a Mormon porn star), baseketball, team America, and more. The soundtracks are all amazing. They do original songs but also license some cool stuff. As far as the time period and aesthetic of this movie, it is a satire and rundown of post 9/11 America and the war on terror. Things were different before the turn of the century. Things are also very different now from when this was made.

"As actors, it is our responsibility to read the newspapers and then say what we read on television like it's our own opinion." Fun Fact: Originally, Matt Damon was going to be portrayed as intelligent and articulate, but when they saw the puppet, they noted that it made him "look retarded" and decided to portray him as such. Unfortunately, I personally can no longer take Matt Damon seriously anymore. Whenever I see him, all I hear is "Matt Damon!" ringing in my ears. MPAA Hacks Fact: Due to a puppet sex-scene, the movie was given a NC-17 Rating by the MPAA. The scene was edited nine times before they received the R rating they were shooting for. Trey Parker later admitted that the scene was originally added to distract the MPAA from the rest of the film's subject matter. On Matt Stone's urging, the scene was reinstated on the "unrated" DVD. Blink And You'll Miss It Fact: The statue in Jong-Il Kim's palace is actually a human in heavy makeup. In the first scene in which he appears, you can see his eyes blinking. In the overhead shot of Gary lying in the giant puddle of vomit, it is actually Trey Parker wearing a pair of fake legs so his proportions more closely match those of the marionettes. The "vomit" was a mixture of soup and beer.

You had to be around at the time, as this film parodies celebrity activists as well as over the top responses by the USA. Some countries were invaded on the basis they had WMDs -Weapons of Mass Destruction, which turned out to be a lie, and basically an excuse to invade them. Hans Blicks was a United Nations inspector and the head bad guy was leader of north Korea at the time. The whole "durka durka" was a parody of the common perception of terrorists, that they all wore dirty robes and spoke Arabic, which just sounds like "durka durka!" to many Americans. This led to people calling the police on things like someone writing scientific notations in a fast food joint because some moron thought it was Arabic.

The idea with using puppets that represent real actors/celebrities: The film's creators, Trey Parker and Matt Stone, are ridiculing the statements and conduct of these people. The targeted actors believe that because they're actors or celebrities, that they have something meaningful to say about world events, such as terrorism, or America's role in the world. (They don't: They're talented and/or fortunate in the acting arena, but are foolish, wildly ignorant and counterproductive when they try to leverage their status to condemn the U.S. President, or Team America, or to attend 'Peace Conferences' or push this or that ((Leftist)) social change.) While these actors who are ridiculed are on the political Left, the film doesn't limit itself to ridiculing only the Left; The film also ridicules things about America that are associated with Conservatism: Team America's efforts to stop terrorism, are/were often done terribly, resulting in about as much destruction as the terrorists would have done. (Was it worth destroying half of Paris and its iconic monuments and museum, to get a handful of guys? Or destroying the various Egyptian pyramids and landmarks?) They also lampoon the mindless jingo-ism that 'America is good BECAUSE it's America' - and not for other, much more substantial and important reasons. The film was released in 2004 and America (and the world) is no longer the same country that it was 19 years ago. But the general themes still resonate.
