Regarding "team wasp", this time of year (late August), yellowjackets and wasps eat a lot of caterpillars in my yard. I have found that if you use a stick to poke a hole in a tent caterpillar nest, the yellowjackets will find the hole and carry the caterpillars away. It is a lot of fun watching them do this.

Add another project to pre spring and spring to do's. Build more bird houses. I have some for blue birds and some duck houses. Thank you so much for the info on house sizes. I have lots of scrap wood that will work perfect for this. I love the swallows and purple martins. Those guys are some of the most amazing flyers. I can sit and watch them from the deck all day. The cocky and territorial robins are always a presence and love to eat my elderberries. I have been visited by a few orioles in recent years. Lots of pretty little finches and such. My chickadees, nuthatches, and woodpeckers have been well fed all winter. Hungry little guys. They are a joy to have. Thanks again. Take care.

Totally amazed at seeing a picture of a robin with caterpillar in its beak. I have never seen a Robin take caterpillars, and we have way more tent caterpillars around here than we do worms. They will however gorge themselves on cherries, and strip a tree in days.

if only I could get the birds to stop uncovering large patches of mulch to eat the worms and bugs underneath it. The local mole is already doing plenty of that and has turned my patches into Swiss cheese. Hasn't harmed anything yet, so I'm not stopping it. They also walk over smaller plants and moved the mulch so much they even smothered some. I don't think the straw is decomposing that fast, even with the mushrooms growing from it. They're stealing my straw.

Sounds alive. Mole Swiss cheese is fantastic for aerating and allowing rains to soak in the soil.

I started in some very hard clay. Definitely helped a lot during tonight's storm. The soil texture is nothing like it was before. It even smells different than the other side of the garden where my parents do traditional gardening.@@StefanSobkowiak

Thank you Stepfan for listing all the birds that are helpful. And for explaining what each does. Great information! You have so many nesting boxes, do you clean them out often?
@StefanSobkowiak6 жыл бұрын
I used to yearly. Now most only 3-5 years. Those filled to the roof are never emptied as they attract bumblebees to nest.

Nice video! How you clean nestboxes and remove old nests?
@StefanSobkowiak6 жыл бұрын
The nest boxes have one side hinged. We only clean some of them every 3-4 years. Yearly clean out is not necessary plus we have 280 nest boxes so it’s too much work to do yearly.

How many nest boxes should we have in the orchard? Can you show us how you build yours?
@StefanSobkowiak6 жыл бұрын
We use 60 nest boxes per hectare (25 per acre). At that density we finally have enough for all the birds. How to build would be a good video.

Stefan, another great video! Thanks very much! Can I ask your opinion about bats? Somewhere I red that they capture 2000 insects per day, of different types. there is an easy nest box to be built and they will come.. But I am wondering if they eat beneficial ones too... and another one. these ones that you have mentioned, do they attack to your crop at all? I am starting my orchard this winter, but until the trees grow and produce, I will have to focus on annual vegetables, will these attack at all on them or they dont eat plants at all?? thanks in advance! keep up!
@StefanSobkowiak6 жыл бұрын
Bat, love bats. Would love to have lots of them. Yes they catch a lot of insects every night. Don’t know about 2,000 but it depends on the size of insects. One of their favourite prey insects in our area is moths. They probably eat what is most numerous with their own preferences. I don’t worry about them eating beneficials since they are never as numerous as prey. If I understand then no bats don’t eat plants,at least not in our areas. They eat fruit and nectar in warmer climates.

Considering any updates?... for example, how to deter waxwings from decimating berry bushes?! 😢
@StefanSobkowiak9 ай бұрын
Plant more. They can decimate the fruit from 10-40 bushes.
@carolvandale55979 ай бұрын
@@StefanSobkowiak hmm🤔 but this is a naturalized saskatoon berry area with hundreds of bushes that thrived after Aspen where cut for our homestead. They've also eaten fruit tree blossoms earlier in the season. Been researching options, I'm going to try pin wheel type noise makers... for starters.

At what minute? The plastic bottles we use are traps for codling moths not sure if that's what you mean.

The greatest skill a youtube watcher should learn is skipping way too long intros on videos. It will save you days of your life in time.
@StefanSobkowiak6 жыл бұрын
Brendon Parker good point. How long is good?
@brendonparker22106 жыл бұрын
I tend not to mind intros if they're under ten seconds. I'm not sure if yt shows you what parts of vids get the watch time but if so I'd go by that and not just my opinion.
