Team Bomby Robertson - The 2021 Fastnet Race - Ep 4

A unique inside look as pro sailors Henry Bomby and Shirley Robertson take on the legendary blue water classic - the Rolex Fastnet Race.
Having trained throughout the summer, Double Handed offshore team of Shirley Robertson and Henry Bomby were determined to put in a competitive showing in the 695 mile Rolex Fastnet Race, sailing in their SunFast 3300.
337 boats crossed the start line into thirty plus knot winds and a stormy angry Solent - ahead of them several days of flat out racing across the Irish Sea to the legendary Fastnet lighthouse, then back to Cherbourg, France.
Fifty nine double handed yachts took on the race, almost half didn't finish - it was a tough edition, and Henry and Shirley filmed every step of the way. If you like offshore sailing or are at all interested in the Fastnet Race, this film will give you a fascinating insight into what it takes.

Great video! I participated in the 2019 Fastnet on a Whitbread 60. The weather was decent and there were 13 of us on board. I can imagine how difficult it was on a boat ½ the length in heavy weather and double-handed. Congratulations! You two make a great team and I hope to see more of your successes in the future!

I have been sailing a scow for a while and the shocks by 15kn are way more frequent and violent, way more than the sample as they leave the Solent, which may not be representative. And it is amazing how the human body and mind adjust. And my little scow sailing is not heroic by any mean. Thx for taking the time ans efforts to record, edit and share!

Well done and fair play to you for filming the campaign, pretty raw and all the more representative for it. Pretty sure I would not have been going below that first day to film a piece to camera. Running Aleis and Guillaume so close is pretty impressive on your first outing, I raced Aleis and his father in 2005 double handed Fastnet so he's been winning that for 16 years now. The amount of data that comes out of that boat must be immense, I think I spotted load cells on: bobstay, forestay, cap shrouds, and backstays. Must make settings much easier to exactly repeat.

Great vid. It would be interesting to know if the JPK caught you later because of a difference in the wind or whether it's quicker downwind in the light. I wish there was some better way we could learn about racing this style of boat; all the sailing media these days is basically fluff pieces and PR about foilers and big boats, rather than actual information that we can use on our own yachts.
