Actually, if you play the Russian version of the game, apparently, Heavy is more sophisticated than most of the other classes. In the English version, he just has trouble with speaking the English language.

I liken Heavy to those cab drivers that used to be nuclear physicists in their home country, but have only just learned English. It's why he's also so intent on his driving, he's not used to driving on that side of the road. Spy and Medic, I figure, have been in the U.S. much longer. Soldier's an interesting case. He's canonically mentally damaged prior to the storyline, plus additionally from drinking lead poisoned water. But he's also managed to become licensed as a priest, an exorcist, a lawyer, and a park ranger in the comics. Somehow. I blame Merasmus.

*sigh* Why do people, after all these years and countless videos and comics by Valve and Valve outright stating THAT THE HEAVY IS NOT STUPID (even giving him a PhD in Russian Literature in his dialogues in Poker Night at the Inventory), still insist on thinking the Heavy is stupid?? Because he is overweight? Because he doesn't talk much? Because he doesn't speak fluent English? Look at the current six-parter TF2 comic. It's made *very* clear there that the Heavy is smart. Look at his dialogue back in Meet the Director, when the Director nosily tries to persuade him to talk about his childhood and family: "I. Like. To shoot. This gun. Is all you need to know." He openly refuses to talk about himself and basically playing dumb so the guy will stop badgering him. The two mercs who have been confirmed in the comics as being (semi-)illiterate are Soldier and Pyro. Soldier needs his fingers to count to three, for crying out loud, and lives like a hobo. And his "robot-confusing" signs on the MvM maps are full of spelling errors and the letters look like a first grader scrawled them.

***** Pyro definitely is illiterate. It's pretty obvious in the recent comics, especially in "Ring of Fired" when we see Pyro trying to read a report and all he/she sees is gibberish. Miss Pauling even flat out says in the Teufort courtroom that "more than 2/3" of the present 5 mercs (Pyro, Soldier, Demoman, Scout, Spy) "can't even read or write". And both in Meet the Medic and in the comics Pyro keeps using comic books and libery books as kindling to make a fire.

Then came "Shadow Boxers" (December 2012) as part of the MvM-themed Mecha Update which doubled as the Smissmas Update 2012. The storyline continued in the current ongoing six-issue comic series "TF Comics #1: "Ring of Fired" (August 2013), "TF Comics #2: "Unhappy Returns" (December 2013), "TF Comics #3: "A Cold Day in Hell" (April 2014) and "TF Comics #4: "Blood in the Water" (October 2014). The comic "A Smissmas Story" (December 2011) should be read, too, because it's referenced in "Unhappy Returns" (adding more confusion for the fans in regard to the RED/BLU team split). Those comics are "Bombinomicon" (released October 2011 for the 'Very Scary Halloween Special', the 3rd annual Scream Fortress event) which featured Merasmus, Monoculus and the Bombonomicon, and Demoman's retconned boyhood backstory about his real family and how he lost his eye. Next was "Doom-Mates" (released October 2012 for the Spectral Halloween Special) explaining how Soldier managed to piss off Merasmus again and why the mercs found themselves at Ghost Fort. Then came "Grave Matters" (released Oct 28, 2013, one day before the start of the Scream Fortress Fifth Annual Halloween Special event). Merasmus in the framing story is telling the tale of the further fate of the dead Redmond and Blutarch Mann twins, or rather their ghosts, making this a direct sequel to "Blood Brothers" and making 2013's the first Halloween event that is told in retrospect. Meaning the events played out in-game on the Ghost Fort and Helltower maps technically happened in the same year 1972, because in "Grave Matters" Soldier is still living as a squatter in Merasmus' old castle. Oh, Valve. Lastly came "Blood Money" (released on Oct 29, 2014 for the Scream Fortress Sixth Annual Halloween Special, explaining the reasons behind the event map Carnival of Carnage (sd_Doomsday_event) the first Halloween map since Harvest_event that didn't feature a boss monster), which technically is yet another story told in retrospect as it's clearly set around the time before the mercs were fired by Grey Mann and before Meramus went to prison (in "Ring of Fired"), but after the events of Ghost Fort, because Soldier says, "Oh hi Merasmus! We were just talking about killing you! Come on in!" when Merasmus knocks on the door where the mercs are having a Halloween party. (Or at least there's some Halloween decoration visible.) And Soldier already has his rabid pet racoons he acquired during his stay at the castle.
