Now I'm very interested if Monte applies the same criteria for narrative epics & poems in the domain of mythology (Eddas, Gilgamesh, Kalevala, Ossianic cycle and many others) as he does for LOTR. Tolkien was directly inspired by some of those and emulated their "loose" structure to a point in his books. The common denominator of their "quality" is in transcending the usual restriction of the genre, medium and time. IMO, judging them by the same criteria as you would 99 % of available fiction does nothing to show their core value.

3:10:43 i think why seinfeld is good and shows like friends / how I met your mother aren't is apart from the comedy itself which is ultimately subjective is that the latter shows don't operate logically or fairly. in seinfeld the cast are bad people who make bad choices and as such they have bad outcomes. in friends the cast are bad people who make bad choices but we are supposed to love them and care about them and want good things to happen to them, which they don't deserve, but get anyway. a lot of shows fall into this trap.

Firefly's writers created 3 different shows, Buffy, Angel and Dollhouse, from 1997 to 2010. All these shows had absolutely worst season first and got way better with time. The argument that 'Firefly was going to get worse' really makes no sense as everyone expected it to get better and fans of the other shows were mostly just suprised that the start was already decent. That's big reason why it still has fans. It's the ultimate 'what if' series. While I do agree that mystery and not showing is often better, in this case the argument its just meaningless. The fans of the show see it like we only got to read the first chapter of our favorite author's last book with the easily strongest start. And then he died.

Referring to Lord of the Rings Books beeing overrated: I think its so much more fun to read if it stays on specific characters and follows their story, then rewinds time and follows another characters story. I absolutely hate if the chapters jump between each characters all the time and its all split up. Its one of my major gripes of books with lots of characters that split. Some do it better some worse, currently reading a Wheel of Time and generally there only is character switch when a plotpoint is finished so it doesnt feel disruptive.

LoR is definitely overhyped but I can see some people loving it. I gave it a huge try, read 1st book - not convinced, little enjoyment, quite boring - started reading 2nd book but in the middle of it I just couldnt make myself read it. Its SOOO boring! Way too much describing, way too little action and important dialogues.

He also thinks wheel of time is over hyped iirc, and for the same reason. And from the 2-3 books of WoT I've read, he's kinda right. Both Tolkien and Jordan are great at building convincing, interesting new worlds, that's where they shine, but their writing on a basic, technical level is kinda bad and grating. I also hated essentially all the main cast in WoT by the time i quit, but I did like the world and lore set up. So they're harder to go back to, and its why he much prefers the LotR movies. Idk much about the WoT series, but I've heard it's bad, sadly.

@@LikeACrouton Dunno how hyped WoT is as I only found by looking for recommendations but it's certainly simpler. Especially the first 3 books are very very simple. But then it kinda explodes in all directions with factions and nations and cultures and characters and gets a lot more complex. Although I actually prefer the simpler beginnings x), as mentioned before I enjoy more to follow one journey instead of many.
