I was at a baseball camp at the aeronautical uni in prescott when this went down. When we all showed up to our dorms, the yarnell hot shots were all walking out of the same ones presumably headed towards the fire. About two days later our coaches broke the news that all the men we saw staying in our dorms had passed away. We took the whole day off of practice to sit in a circle and pray

The film "Only the Brave" shows a brief shot of the recovery team finding them, in that shot all the shelters are intact...in reality all but 3 were completely vaporized, the 3 recover from the site were reduced to the size of a ball of tin foil. I just can't fathom how awful and hellish it must have been in those final few moments for these brave men.

That movie hit home for me I was 17yrs old and a drug addict also facing time in prison. I asked God if he gave me one more chance that I'd change my life for the better. The next day all charges were dropped and that day I enlisted into the army and 9 months later I deployed to Iraq. I lost a lot of friends over there. But I live every day in memory of them. I refuse to give up because my friends didn't get a choice and I do so I will never be unappreciated for the life I have.

Watching both "Deepwater horizon" and "Only the brave" goes to show the pain and suffering these type of people go through. Both of these stories are very similar and emotional.
@maygenburrell25476 жыл бұрын
Deepwater Horizon is not only my favorite movie, I watch it all the time, but now Only The Brave is close to taking the top spot. You actually feel the pain these people went through when you watch these movies. As well as other movies depicting tragedies like these. It’s truly heart wrenching to think that all of these people risk their lives for nature and for other people and I have read comments of people saying that these people aren’t heroes. Maybe the Granite Mountain Hotshots made a mistake moving their location, maybe they didn’t. We will never know. But these people have families and loved ones that think of them as heroes. & Their titles as that shouldn’t be taken from them. It’s sad to me people say these things. Deepwater and Only The Brave are 2 of the best movies I have seen in my 25 years of life.

@TimKaseyMythHealer4 жыл бұрын
Changes that must be made: 1) Each hotshot should have their own dirt bike for fast escape. Secondary, and equally as effective, electric mountain bike. The fire moved at 10-12mph, and any mountain bike could outrun that. 2) Three (or more) mobile weather stations on 20 foot telescopic poles. These can be set up along a fire line. If at any point along a fire line the wind speed exceeds 20mph (for example) an audible siren is heard along with a flashing strobe. This will overcome the dynamic of smoke blocking the flames when the crew is working ahead of the flames and smoke has prevented the firefighters from seeing & determining fire rate of spread. Each of the four wind speed detectors equipped with a siren to warn you that the wind speed has exceeded 20mph. 3) GPS tracking unit on the group with GPS tracker I-pad monitored by a water bucket dropper. The water tanker (in this case) was unable to locate the group that had been blocked by smoke. 4) Spotters who's only job is to keep an eye on both wind speed and fire direction. This is only effective if smoke doesn't block view. The mobile wind speed and direction alarms are a best bet. They can be purchased cheaply enough, and be allowed to burn up in the flames if they become overtaken by the flames. You can design these units to work with phone apps & to send data over radio frequencies. 5) Equally as important is to understand that not every small campfire sized blaze is going to be met with a 10k dispatched water tanker. Because of this, a fast attack response crew should be available (but they won't dispatch them either). What does it cost to dispatch anything? 10k minimum is my guess. The next best bet is to have many more citizens trained in fire fighting. All volunteer fire fighters, as well as all citizens who live near areas of high fire probability, should monitor NASA FIRES maps. These are real-time fire monitoring maps. A volunteer living within 5 miles of a fire can put it out in the first 30 minutes with a brush truck. Most dispatches to fires are after it has gotten so out of control that the Mayor of the town makes a few phone calls, but by this time its too late.
@Etomidate4 жыл бұрын
You gotta remember, those bikes, weather equipment, and any other weight can be more of a danger to the person than you know. Falling through ash stumps, heat stroke, falling trees are more of a danger to Wildland firefighter than the actual fire. We already have mobile weather kits that are electric or manual, we can get weather whenever we want. The bikes would be really cool, but most of the time the terrain makes it impossible to get those bikes up to where we go, we could be going over 3 miles into a completely burned out area where you can’t even see where the true ground is, just a thick layer of ash. But At least you are putting forward ideas and seem enthusiastic about it.
@Etomidate4 жыл бұрын
And usually on bigger fires there is always a lookout somewhere posted up, maybe not from your crew, but giving information to operations that crews can hear over TAC1. As well as someone at Operations with a very good weather station giving us live updates on RH wind and clouds.
@TimKaseyMythHealer4 жыл бұрын
I've viewed several hot shot crew tragedies where they were unable to outrun the fire, and they were near a road. Having a van nearby to shuttle everyone out of the area is also an option. If as you were saying, it is impossible to have any motorized vehicle in the area, they need to construct an 8 person lifting device that can attach to the helicopter. A modified carnival seating system with cable rigging attachment would do the trick. Fast evacuation lifting device. The trouble with such a device is that you must anticipate the wind speed change and shuttle everyone out before the winds kick up. Some helicopters can handle heavy winds. Rather than to do nothing because it looks too dangerous, have various options available that address the different hazards.
@Etomidate4 жыл бұрын
@@TimKaseyMythHealer that device would be pretty hard to use with a hard smoke cover like these hotshots had. And usually there is motorized vehicles. We always drove in trucks or buggies. But you could be 1-5 miles away from those trucks on any given day

Can someone genuinely answer how this happened? My understanding is that they were in “the black” - an already burned out area. Was there intense winds and did they mostly die from hot gasses in their lungs? I’m just trying to understand how a fire like this works when they retreat to a clearing. How could so much flame be in the “black”?
@MrZoomah4 жыл бұрын
I know in Australia, under the right conditions, radiant heat from a fire can kill you at 300m. (900 feet) Put a few bricks or metal between you and the radiant heat and you survive. Put a small shelter.. not so much. Not sure if they died from radiant heat or not but I can imagine it still getting them.
@lorinavrodtzke8932 Жыл бұрын
They moved out of the black to go to their safety zone, a ranch I think a mile away. They went into a box canyon to get there, thought they had enough time, and the fire came around them and cut them off. They were in an area of dry vegetation when they deployed. That's why the shelters failed. The fire hit somewhere around 2500 degrees and went directly over them. No shelter can withstand that kind of heat

Something was not right with this fire, like those in California. Their fire blankets did not protect them like they should have. Someone needs to bring the truth out with what’s going on with these fires. May God do that and also bless, heal, and give comfort to these families and friends of the men who died in that fire. In Jesus name
