To further comment on folks who are upset about the loopholes: Ambrosius is all about loopholes. The less specific people are in their creation requests, the more creative he gets to be (which he enjoys), and his creativity is essentially exploiting loopholes in the requests made of him; he actively looks for ways to add his own touch to the requests. Additionally, he was aware from the beginning that they were trying to save Penny's life. Ruby was upfront about that fact. He knew what they "wanted" but he has to make what they "ask" for. Honestly, Ambrosius seemed happy to execute their request because of its creativity and the creative freedom they explicitly gave him. And of course, as you pointed out, he said himself that the outcome was unclear. Team RWBY accepted that risk, and so Ambrosius did as they asked.

I don't mean to disprove you or anything in the sort but I don't remember anything about the staff of creation being one to exploit loopholes. @effortlessfury

@@blueflarecharizard7295 It's not explicitly stated that way, but Ambrosius uses any vagueness in the request as an opportunity for creativity; for example, he laments at how specific the evacuation plan is. However, Team RWBY didn't ask for a bottomless pit that necessitated a dire warning, did they? He used a gap in their request, which I'm likening to a loophole, to add something to their request that was not specified. Penny's "human form" was also something Ambrosius added to their request that they did not specify.

I think people also forget that the Relics were made by the god of Light to help Ozma against Salem so the spirits are beholden to the rules BUT generally benevolent. That's why Jhin accepted Ruby's rule bend and wasn't more upset that Hazel asked no question. The spirits aren't here to screw people over or punish them for using the powers of the relics. If anything, a character like Ambrosis was probably more interested in the challenge of figuring out a solution than in following the rules.

also noted, that Ambrosious was very positive about Team RWBY in the first place. They stroke his artistic ego + being humble but prepared enough. They made a big impression on him. Nothing fancy. Not a "FLOATING PEDESTRIAN CITY". It was a honest yet complex wish. Oscar had the background info, that he is this kind of character. Being on his positive side made the chance of success vastly higher. Ambrosious could have given them ANYTHING else with Penny's soul in it. He wouldnt put it in a stone and call it a day, since he seems to be proud of his creation, but it could definitly be something else easily. But since they were on his good side and he certainly catched their drift and being impressed and all, he gave them what they truely desired all along. I think that part was executed very well.

SPOILERS FOR CHAPTER 13! Don’t read if you haven’t seen it. We see the consequences of word choice with Ambrosius (can’t remember how to spell his name so sorry if it’s wrong). When explaining the portals, Weiss says “people enter through one side and exit on the other, a one way ticket to Vacuo”, I’m paraphrasing but that’s the gist of what she said. You’ve said it so much better than I could. It’s ok if people don’t like it, but it makes sense, it didn’t come out of nowhere. The writers actually had some excellent wordplay this episode. He cannot destroy, so leaving her soul without a body or outright destroying it after the next request is out of the question, a loophole. Then like he said a soul needs a body, so he was forced to give her a body for the aforementioned “no killing” rule. And it was a gamble, the characters even mention this. There was a chance were his powers were limited and the “new” Penny would vanish once they created something else. But they at least tried and got what they wanted.
@relic5752
@relic5752 3 жыл бұрын
Well, it did kinda come out of nowhere. Outside of the "One creation" rule, none of the others were established until this episode: the fact that a spirit resides in the spear, how he needs a reference, how careful wording is needed for people to get what they want, and, most importantly, the no kill rule. The execution becomes rather shaky from this, regardless of whether or not it makes sense.

@@MurderofBirds (reposting this here so I get the little hashtag thing, hopefully so it gets noticed. = I know this comment is probably going to get buried, but I have to mention my opinion on why I disagree and why you missed the point. I'm not saying that RWBY should have told him how to make a human body. I'm saying that Penny's human body should have been destroyed. The body wasn't made by Penny's aura/soul. It is specifically state and inferred by Ambrosius and Ruby to have been made by him. It was made by Ambrosius' power, which means that regardless of the loophole, it should have been destroyed. You can't use the "he can't destroy" rule against that, because if that were true, then Team RWBY could just have easily have asked him to make a new body for Penny sans the virus, and then when he tried to make something new they'd go "uh uh uh, you can't destroy" and Penny lives. But they explicitly stated that RWBY can't do that, which means that wouldn't have worked. Which means that Penny's new Human body should have been destroyed upon making a new wish. Furthermore, it is unlikely Penny's aura/soul would have been destroyed: Ozma and the Brother of Light's conversation in Jinn's flashback make it clear that there is a form of afterlife, so Penny dying wouldn't have destroyed the soul. Also, the "Can't destroy" rule doesn't work, since he clearly destroys his creations after a new one is made. Now you may say "But that's just his power at work, not him." Okay, but that just means Penny's new body would have been destroyed regardless. If he personally destroyed his creations after every wish, then that means that can and is destroying them, making it a lie, but he can't control it, then that means Penny's human body should still be destroyed as it was something made by his power. Plus, he can destroy things indirectly. He was asked to make a new Penny using her exact Robot parts. Okay. Then he was asked to make the tunnels... and the robot Penny got destroyed. He never made those robot parts. He made the body with them, but the parts were pre-existing, which shows that he can destroy things very easily if it's indirect. Which further supports that the rule is a complete lie. THAT'S the problem with the episode. The loophole is a plothole. The only actual loophole in this is that RWBY got two things for one wish. That's it. Doesn't change the fact that Penny's human body, since it was made by his power, should have been destroyed.

Wording is very important with these relic spirits. With that in mind, a second explanation as to why Jinn wasn't more upset at Oscar, Hazel and Emerald summoning her and not asking a question is the exact words she told Ruby in volume 6: "I will not allow YOU to summon me without a question again." Basically, in case Arnold's explanation is a bit confusing, the reason "human" Penny exists and isn't destroyed when the staff is used again, is because human Penny wasn't part of the creation they asked for, since what they asked for was a version of Penny using her existing parts and virus, which intentionally leaves out the soul. Human Penny is then something that Ambrosius was semi forced to make, because he was unable to destroy her soul, and the only way to not destroy her soul was to make her a new body, but since they didn't technically ask him to do that, she just exists now, separate from the staff's rules. That's the loophole. She isn't part of the request, so she doesn't get removed when the staff is used again.

This video was really great, but I have two little things to add: 1. I am still not confident Penny just got a human body now. I get why team RWBY was cagey about not telling him to create a human body because they wanted to make sure that they had nothing to do with what Ambrosius would do with Penny's soul. But Ambrosius himself was very excited about what he would do so for it to just boil down to creating a human body seems strange. But I expect some kind of comment from Pietro to clear things up. 2. I get why you say again and again that Penny "is a real girl now". But that isn't what happened. RWBY as a show was VERY clear since we found out about her being an android that Penny was always a real girl. Blake also says it in this episode. I just think a pretty important nuance gets lost when we don't at least awknoledge that Penny always was a real girl and that what happened in this episode was about saving her and giving her autonomy over her body and not about making her a real girl.

But thing is... Ambrosius wasn't obligated to do a thing with a soul. By recreating Penny's robotic body in this manner he would only leave her soul extracted. Alone. Unbound by anything but the rules of life and death of the world. So she would drift away to the post-life (and we KNOW that such a thing exists, as do twin-gods, as should he, Ambrosius, do as their creation) and that would be it. There would be no destruction or killing whatsoever - only reassembly and extraction. Anything else is not in his jurisdiction. What we got is a plothole because of laziness, magic and... reasons. Moreover - even if Amby really SHOULD do something with Penny's soul (once again, he really shouldn't, but let's entertain the thought), then her new body would be considered his work too. It's not so much about creation anymore as much about single act of his. Which should be against the rule - can't create more than one thing, right? But - another one - even if his terms of service are giving a pass to this shabang, then it would be considered a part of his process of creation. Thus an act - like an order in a fast-food resturant that consists of two or more things. And both of this things - Penny's old robotic body with a virus and her new human(-ish) one - would disappeear once anything else would come to being by the powers of the staff. We can argue that yeah, how much of it is Penny's self and how much - Ambrosius' work, but creation of this brand new body started by the act of no other but Ambrosius himself. Thus it SHOULD abide by the rules, because otherwise - why should we care about this "rules" anyway? At the very best he should said something along "No can do, ladies, you're kiiiiind a stretchin' the whole set of rules too little too thin". Because it's really bending to the point of breaking.

Yep, even Oscar’s body language is changing. It’s actually very fascinating to watch. The show never really throws it in our face, but it’s there. His voice is not necessarily changing in the way it sounds but in the way he talks, if that makes sense... and the way Oscar stands and walks with the staff. He’s young, he doesn’t need a cane to walk but he moves like he does.

I'd also like to mention that whenever Oz and Oscar would switch it was a kinda 'May I take over?' kind of vibe... It was like an unspoken rule between each other. (Since Oscar wanted to be his own person, evident with how he was upset when Oz returned) But now it's like the rule they had has been swept under the rug. Poor Oscar (But I'd love to see the possible changes in his eyes since eyes say everything about the soul, especially in RWBY)

My thoughts on the merging of the "like-minded souls" is that fusing won't be so bad. I'm thinking they're so much alike that the person who is the current host is still very much present, he just so happens to have Ozpin's memories and when he talks about those kinds of things, he says it like he was there in the first person but we'd all know he was talking about Ozpin. Oz said in the flashback that he learned to live with his host. What if that just means the host would retain his personality during his lifetime? This is assuming the souls would be so like-minded that Oscar would've made the same decisions even if they weren't merged.

This is what I posted on Adel Aka review video. Anyone else watch his RWBY videos, he has a lot of issues that I do not agree with. "I think it makes some sense, This was also a large gamble on their part. On the basis that a new request causes the old request to disappear, they worded their request so that it only included remake with only the existing robot parts (virus included) knowing that it will disappear with the second request. They requested for him to remake penny using her existing parts, because the virus would be included and that this remake would also not transfer her soul with the maiden powers. Because him can only create and not destroy, he is unable to leave her soul with no body to sustain it. Thus he needs to build her a new body as a byproduct of the request (Which is what the really want). The gamble is that Because team RWBY only requested a remade Penny bot with no soul and that he has a inability to destroy, they would be able to create the desired byproduct and that her new human body it is not bound by the one creation at a time rule. This is them working a small loophole in his rules. I think this Works within the rules of the show and that the loophole is no something that can be used very often and will only work in small isolated situation like Penny."

And a lot of people make videos for views which isn't a bad reason to do so. Adel aka explains the reason he continues to watch rwby is because he already spend a lot of time on it that he should see it until the end, to see how the show resolves itself. While not the smartest reason to continue watching a show, it's something I can understand. While yes, he hates and insults rwby a lot, he`s also gives solutions to certain issues and compliments the show when it does something he considers good writing, he's not afraid to state his opinion. He just didn't understand the the whole staff of creation scene and you can't say it was easy to understand considering many including I didn't understand the plan. There you meet two identical twins who start speaking at the same time "Hello stranger, we will answer only one question. Know that one of us always lies and the other always tells the truth." The relic spirits we've seen so far have the monkey's paw/genie stipulation where they need to be extremely specific otherwise they WILL be taken advantage of. Being weird and specific with Penny put everything into Ambrosius' hands, and since he can't destroy her aura which is what would happen were the wish to go on without the loophole, he was forced to create a vessel for her. I like to headcanon that he knew what was up, much like Jinn when Ruby summoned her for a grace period, but admired the way they played everything and how they used his own rules so much that he decided to grant their wish for a proper body for Penny. Eta: fantastic video, Arnold. The visual aid was a lot of fun, and I imagine this will help quite a few people out

This is exactly how I’d interpreted their plan! Anyone complaining about loopholes forget: the spirits seem to really like when people use their relics in unconventional ways. Jinn acted annoyed, but begrudgingly admitted that Ruby summoning her to buy time for her to focus was a clever move. She also seemed to be fine with being summoned for little more than being used to prove that Ozpin was telling the truth to Hazel. In short: they like it when people get creative and think outside of the box. They encourage it.

Here's a thing I've been itching to say for ages that appiles to this situation: nobody understands just how much work goes into cheating in video games. The coding, the testing, the compiling, all of it must take hours to get just one or two working codes that don't crash the game. It's hard work and it's impressive that Team RWBY managed to craft their cheat code of a request so well in under an hour. Also, just to pick at Ambrosius' mind/personality more and to also go off of my own comment regarding the lack of handrails, he said the girls were "quite thorough" as if he knew the design for the portals was flawed and which is why he bothered to warn them. Also, Ambrosius seems to pride himself in is craftsmanship and that the complexity of the thing he's being asked to make is what motivates him (he thinks a floating city is pedestrian (how Atlas was designed was kinda bad so I can seen why he'd think it to be pedestrian, he'd probably be able to do better) but a soul-infused/powered android piques his interest).

Really glad you made this, hopefully people can see this and understand the episode. A lot of people will say this is cheap, but it makes sense given the rules Ambrosius had. The characters had a loophole and they used it, it's all in the word-play, and like Arnold said, it was a once-in-a-lifetime situation. And, not to spoil anything for chapter 13, but some of the wording they used in their creations came to bite them, so it's not like everything goes perfectly I feel a lot of confusion would have been avoided if the rules for the staff were explained earlier this volume and not right before it was used, but oh well The tl;dr of the situation, the human penny with the soul wasn't asked for, it was just something Ambrosius had to make because he couldn't destroy. Thus, it didn't disappear next time the staff was used. Team RWBY didn't even know if it would work, they just gave it a shot
@ameliapotter7980

One thing also is that Ambrosius said "do not fall". And Yang basically said that the central location would be like inside the vaults. So does that mean the in the vaults there's an edge you can fall off of? The vaults doors lead to another dimension. The relics are another dimension. Either Ozpin created these other dimensions or he found four pocket dimensions and built schools on top of them or the Gods built them to place the relics in. Either way, if the central location is like "a place like here a.k.a the vaults" and you can fall and people will fall, (those platforms look awfully small for so much people and not everyone would immediately turn back to go through the portal so people will fall.....just the background characters, so it's fine). It may not be in the central location that a main character will fall but in a vault itself that they may fall off the edge.

so to dumb this down, Ambrosius ended up creating a new robot Penny with the virus, while leaving the original (aura) Penny and of course he took his own liberty to give that aura a human vessel. So once Ambrosius created the portals or whatever, the robot he created with the virus disappeared. (it still doesnt make sense to me how human Penny didnt disappear as he still created her, call it a by product or whatever, she was still created by Ambrosius, so how come only the robot with the virus disappeared after Ambrosius created the portals) mind you Ambrosius could have just left that aura floating around im sure, but it was clear in the show he wanted to exploit the loopholes for team RWBY just because he felt like it. After all the audience is already aware the spirits in the relics have their own somewhat free wills even if they strictly follow through with their own rules, sometimes.

OK so. What exactly is stopping them from using this exact Technique on Salem? Create a new Organic Body for her, with all the grim esceance in it, with her ability to use magic too (maybe if possible). Have Ambrosius create a new body for Salems soul. Then destroy the corrupted body. Now Salem is sitting there, maybe still Immortal and able to use magic, but unable to control Grimm. Would vastly improve their chances.

He'd still need some sort of reference though, right? They'd probably need a way of incapacitating Salem so he can examine her or give him a really good photo of her.

So nice of you to make this video. Very well explained I have to say 👍 Honestly I was so confused with Ruby's wording ar first and I felt really dumb for it but the people on KZbin were very nice to explain things to me in the comment section. You could always go seeking for help in any Rwby video but it's great that there is a crash course video on the wording so anyone can just watch 👍👍👍

That scene, where the old penny scanned her was rather weird. It didn’t show anything underneath in the new vessel, just a free flowing aura. I’d be satisfied and also puzzled that even if it wasn’t intentional, Ambrosious created a new life. But I’m also thinking that maybe this new Penny isn’t exactly human either. Just a vessel of power that can never truly cease

It might depend what it was scanning for... But yeah, I don't think we can know for sure yet... Unless they said in the new episode I can't watch yet.

@Declan McKenna that's what I've been thinking about this past week, even commented about it on another video, especially after the recent episode. She's still not human to me until I see her bleed personally. What were to happen if her aura breaks? Would her "body" remain as it is seen, or would it lose shape until her aura regenerates? What did Ambrosius create her "body" out of? I thought Arnold might touch on that a bit in this video but he mainly focused on the creation process, rather than the product 😅

Pretty great explanation about how that wish worked for Ambrosious. The jars certainly helped.
