23 years and now retired LEO, you hit that on the head.

Great topic. After 20 years in LE I assumed my first leadership role and had a little bit of a struggle with being an effective leader.

I feel that even if you are a leader with 30 years of experience and believe that you are the smartest person in the unit. Your knowledge and experience does not even equal the cumulative knowledge and experience of those you lead. A leader that can bring a group of individuals together and lead/guide them in a productive direction is worth more than single person with the most knowledge in the world, but can't lead or listen to his or her followers.

Five Fucking Stars. Taking responsibility is huge. It's different than takingl the credit. Commando stuff, awesome. It works in regular life too.

Solid. Do you modify your approach when counseling elite level operators/very high performers, other than the Complement Sandwich?

I think what kind of smart should be clarified? There is IQ smart, book smart, & job/MOS smart. I've known guys who aren't real smart but they know their job & how to do it better than most anybody. If you're a smart leader you'll learn from a guy who might not have as high a GT score as you, but knows more about the skills of your MOS than you do.
