Ak47 fires the 7.62x39 the AK74 fires the 5.56x45. The difference is that the 7.62x39 has a 123 grain bullet which has a velocity of 2,400fps and the 5.56x45 has a much smaller bullet weight at 63 grains(almost half the weight) with a higher velocity of 3,000fps. What that means is a little more distance with the 5.56(some will argue better accuracy) and a harder hitting round with the 7.62.

Both the AK-47 and AK-74 are assault rifles, just the AK-74 fires a 5.45x39mm bullet instead of the 7.62x39mm that the AK-47 fires

Ak-47 = 7.62 and the Ak-74 = 5.56. Those are only the diameters though. 7.62 = .308 5.56 = .223 For those over in the new world.

AK-74 is actually 5.45mm not 5.56mm.
