Very interesting - I've definitely found in myself that while my maintenance is around 2400 kcal, I need to consume over 2700 to gain weight slowly, and need to be well below 2000 to cut. Great podcast as always! Btw just bought the strength and nutrition pyramids and am so excited to read :)

How do you figure the right maintenance calories when you are returning to gym after being off a year or so. I’m gaining muscle and losing fat at same time which I have found makes it difficult to use scale and tracking calories even when taking weekly averages. Do I just have to wait until my muscle gain slows down to be able to correctly determine my true maintenance calories? I literally maintained roughly the same weekly average weight over the last month but can see noticeable fat loss in appearance. Is this a case where scale weight isn’t as useful of a tool at the moment? I calculated my initial (ballpark figure) from a Eric’s formula off the Nutrition Pyramid and dropped it 500 calories.
