Something worth pointing out about Gozabura, he did *not* want to adopt Seto and Mokuba. I've always thought that he was as abusive to Seto as he was because he wanted to punish the poor kid for outplaying him in chess.

That is not correct. In the manga it is directly told that gozaburo came to the orphanage to look for a child to adopt. Kaiba instead challenged him to a duel, and if he won, gozaburo would have adopted both instead of just just seto. I think gozaburo was just a horrible father and treated seto so bad because he considered him more like a pet to train that a child to teach.

personally i think Sora is quite a freaky character. when he's introduced he's seen as like a sweet innocent lil dude. even his deck reflects that at first only playing Fluffals but then his initial breakdown playing agsinst Shay sort of lets you know that there's definitely something wrong with him and that maybe you shouldn't trust him. honestly quite a few ARC V characters are a bit spooky when you look a bit deeper

Oh man, yeah Sora is super spooky. I do really like Sora from a character perspective though and his growth (that I remember) is really Cool. For me, Battle Beast was also a nightmare in a different way. More like a "Bounty Hunter mixed with a feral Animal". Like Raphiel if the Island took more of his humanity.

Also, here's an idea for a follow-up video: "Duelists With Disproportinately Horrifying Decks." These are duelists who use decks that are WAY creepier than the character themselves. For two examples: IV: Gimmick Puppets. Yes IV started as a villain, but he never matched the sheer, nightmarish cruelty of the gimmick puppets. Akira Zaizen: This guy is a noble, patient and protective older brother... who uses a deck themed around a lovecraftian horror story.

Ive always wondering this about Strings. He was actually able to summon abd use Slifer. Was this because Marik was controlling him and Marik was deemed worthy to use one of the Gods or was Strings himself deemed worthy by Slifer. Also, on a slightly releated note, Mai was allowed to summon Ra but just wasnt able to cast the spell that served as the last step to bring his coporal body to the living realm, meaning that Ra gave her the tasset approval for her to use him.

Right! I think for Strings that would be the case for sure -- Marik constantly refers to him as a doll, so I'd assume the god cards see the mind of the person controlling the doll (and possibly having the Millenium Rod's magic could help amplify the control of that power). As for Mai, I always found it interesting. In the Dub Yugi says that the Gods can only be used by a select few duelists, but there's not much to elaborate on that. Like, if the logic was that they needed a connection to Egypt then that falls apart with Mai (and later with Jaden from GX when he duels against the counterfeit Ra user, but then look at Odion who was knocked out by it), but if it's more based on will power or fighting spirit then that would make more sense. I used to think as a kid, "Oh Mai needs to say the chant as the final step to summon Ra for it to count" but I don't know If I'd deem that true on reflection. slightly off-topic but what do you think about the idea of Joey using it. Do you think he'd be strong enough if Yugi taught him "Da CHANT".

My favorite Battle City Duelist was Arkana. In the dub, he traps Yugi with a "Dark Energy Disk" that will "send him to the shadow realm", but in the OG, he was gonna saw off Yugi's legs with a buzzsaw!

Arkana was defiantly one that was top contenders. If there was an honorable mention he would be the GOAT. He truly has the vibes to show what an example of what Yami Yugi could look like in Duel Monsters if he gave into his dark thoughts. On top of that, his urge to bring back his wife no matter the cost and the damage he got to his face (Which we never see) is so heartbreaking, and shows the pain of a man willing to do anything (including sawing a teenager’s legs off) just to reach his goal. The biggest let down about him is actually not even his fault, but rather the fact that Yami/Yugi don’t include the 2nd copy of Dark Magician into their deck. It would have been so fun to see that being used against Seto or others not expecting it, and even cooler to see Yugi and Yami each get access to a Dark Magician. Especially since the red DM has more visual similarities to The anime version of Silent Magician and Gandora than the Purple one (and the fact that purple one is suppose to be the reincarnation of one of the pharaoh’s servants.)

oh that is a good one -- For me, From Duelist of the Roses, even with all the bangers in general (and that game has a ton), and probably my fav ost song from a game at all to be honest, it's got to be the Title intro song -- I know it's a "Safe Pick" but man do I get hyped every time I hear it. If ever I need a pick-me-up to get hyped for something, I'll pull up the intro video and blast that bad boy. The editing on it is so fun too, visually speaking, and weather 8 years old or 29 years old, it never lets me down.@@woodigel9700

Marik was a Beast. I would even say he was the most Evil out of the Villians. He wouldn't play Games for to long too but; he loves to toy with his opponents and when he says it's over it's OVER! I hope he makes a return in the coming years. It would be interesting seeing him in a Main threat movie or series without focusing on him as the Main threat but him going after someone and Yugi maybe intervene.

15:17 Actually, the closest employee to Seto and Mokuba is Roland, since he is their personal assistant and manages large portions of the company for them. Kuwabara is more like the new lead for R&D after Seto got rid of the Big 5.

Roland is definitely a strong candidate for that title as well! For me though, (again just my opinion) Kuwabara has a lot more potential to betray them -- His title come with a lot more power and knowledge which if he wanted to, Kuwabara could either sell info rival company (like industrial Illusions), or to make his own company like Scott does in Falsbound. I think Kuwabara has less to lose and way more to gain by stabbing them in the back than if Roland tried something, and although loyal, Kuwabara doesn't bend to Seto (At least in the same way that Roland does.) But Roland is a homie for life, no doubt!

From what I’ve been thinking, it would probably be a tossup between “virtual world” Which really has nothing in common with him except the fact that that’s their name. Like they’re not even knight and dragon themed, I think they’re based off of Chinese mythology, so maybe that, but I think the one that really feels right for him is “mementotlan”. It’s a fairly new deck that focuses on redesigning old normal monsters from back in the day, including cards like “dark blade” and “key mace”. It would kind of be like he’s re-coding older versions of cards in order to be controlled by him, which gives them the added benefit of gaining effects. That way, it’s not necessarily like he’s creating new cards out of thin air, he’s just changing pre-existing coded cards to help him win in fights, while also having the benefit of including a few cards that were actually in false bound kingdom now morphed into their new forms just for Scott. That would mean that his big boss monster, which is the “combined creation” would be an example of him combining all of the coding from his other monsters in order to summon it. It’s kind of like how Pokémon Colosseum has dark energy Pokémon that basically are different from their non-dark energy forms. Again, this is kind of off-the-cuff, but I feel like it fits with him a lot more than virtual world does, and also has the added benefit of being nostalgic.

I love making character decks and theres a card i really like for panik that fits him flavor wise and field wise when he makes everything dark. Its Swords of Concealing Light. Its also a nice parallel to Yugi being that they dueled each other and Swords is one of Yugis iconic cards

I'm sure that will change when I get to 5ds and beyond but it would be awesome if I could balance them to do a cross series match. I basically have a screenshot of the deck and the ydk file so my friends and I can mess around with them on edopro. Even made a randomizer wheel in case we wanted to pick at random. One annoying thing was figuring out how to bypass the limit 3 for Mai and her harpie ladies lol

One thing that I'd like to bring up, even though people love to shit on it. Is Rush duels. Our latest villain to date, Kuaidul, is literally a gigabrain god like marik, manipulating everyone, and his deck is literally the best cards of the main cast, but "prime'd"

I love Shaddolls so much to be honest, even tried to mix them with neo-spacians before the spacians got new support since they all use the "Mixed Element" school of thought when fusing monsters, but that one didn't work back then. -- Maybe eventually XD

Oh yeah, I loved Duelist of the Roeses -- THAT INTRO IS A SLAM DUNK NO MATTER HOW MANY YEARS GO BY! And dear lord those CD's were always playing on repeat at my Gandmas house when I was little. It was a warm memory to revisit, and I'd like to talk more about it soon. For me Cosmo Queen was the coolest monster back then! I remember sitting in my childhood bedroom and thinking it was neat to have my own Normal monster that wasn't in the anime. Like, "Yeah, now I have an independent monster that is all mine". That and "Wingedwever" both hold special places in my heart as big tribute monsters, and don't even get me started on "Harpies' Brother/ Sky Scout" Talking about this all hits a warm and fuzzy place in my heart so, thank you.

I might be off and this might be flimsy reasoning but I would've given Marik Darklords Ignoring the lack of egyptian theme Darklords were meant to represent angels but their rebellion lead to their fall and corruption. This works because Marik becoming corrupted lead him astray from his duty as a gravekeeper in a sense rebeling from a higher authority. The theme continues further with the monsters in that archetype achieving their darklord form by warping and mutilating themselves. tbh I am not taking effects into account

Darkness from GX, have him use Shaddoll cards to represent the corruption of certain characters like Atticus and Fujiwara. Maybe also throw in cards like Dark Honest and the new (at this time) Yubel fusion monster.

Right! It's not impossible, but Yugi and Kaiba would need work Super hard to overcome the threats Strings would bring out. Def might need a hand trap at some point, but I could see Yugi using "Dark Magic Circle" and "Eternal Soul" to banish components of Strings Deck to keep them from being used for fusion material. Still a hard fight for sure!

XD

People forget Yugioh is for a teen demographic in Japan. Which is why it’s horrifying in the manga, Japanese version anime, and in some OCG art. I mean, Shonen manga and anime are for early to late teen boys and the Yugioh OCG is literally confirmed this as well as stated on the back of every pack, deck or set. Understand I am excluding Rush Duels and anime associated with it. Only the mainstream Yugioh anime, manga and OCG.

Right! I do miss the feelings of Dreed and horror that Season Zero up to 5Ds brought. There was always something so sinister about the opponents they faced off against (sometime actively dueling cult members). My all-time favorite will be Kyriu/ Kallen Kestler from 5Ds cus of how insane he is but also his redemption arc later on is fantastic!

The name change of Osiris is genuinely one of THE most frustrating edits 4kids ever made. Seriously, the more you learn about the mythology, the more you learn just how fitting it was for Atem to have the Egyptian God of the afterlife as his ace card, not a random and careless joke about an exec. 10:49 ...Holy shit. I literally had Despia picked as an archetype for Yami Marik, and they're "Corrupted Dogmatika" 27:52 Other way around actually. Yami Marik wanting the God Cards to rule the world was 100% a dubism. In truth, he too just wanted to torture people. The God cards made that easier, but they were a means to an end. Kinda overselling Panik, sorry. In the manga, and the original dub, it's Yami who gets inside HIS head, exposing him as a cowardly fraud, playing mind games with him via a countdown to Panik's defeat and stringing him along throughout the duel. "Your life ends in five turns." As Shinta says: "It's hard to use darkness against a spirit who drowned in it, and survived." Personally, I'd go with the Shaddoll for panic. They've never appeared in the anime, they're flip effect monsters, so always facedown and hidden like Panik's cards were. Have a lot of control and disruption effects, and their nature as evil dolls/corrupted versions of other monsters foreshadows Pegasus' childlike deck and habbit of using his opponents monsters against them.

I agree with Osiris, actually in an interview, Dan Green (The Voice of Yugi) has gone on record saying Osiris is his favorite Egyptian God (in general, not just related to the card game). And Glad to hear I wasn't too far off with the Yami Marik pick XD it was one I had to really think about, other than that I was considering the mini-Lava Golem homies, the "Kaiju's", but those feel too reactive, like they need your opponent to pop off to even do anything, and on top of that, they just don't match up to the hype aesthetic that is the "Dogmatika"" and "Despia" cards that feel so much more like they match with his vibe. I definitely see your feelings on PaniK. He definitely isn't for everyone, and maybe it's a lot of nostalgia (I remember the first time I saw that episode I was watching it with my dad at my grandmas and a weather emergency report cut the episode short, but it was a real bonding time with him), but he holds a special point in my heart. He just feels so much like a Kenshin henchman and That was another series I loved growing up so there's some residual love for him cus of that. And I can see Shadolls being a good one too! For The Setting cards face-down to hide them in Darkness is also a really cool allegory for lurking in the shadows so very nice pick for sure! Thanks for the comment! Happy to chat. You're someone I also enjoy talking to. For Yami Marik, Despia was my pick, but that's not necessarily the best fit for him. As I learned more about the Despia playstyle, I've learnt that they're style is more about dramatic twists and reveals as opposed to slow torture. So Dogmatika might fit slightly better his actual playstyle. Archfiends were another one that was suggested for Marik as not only do they have several control effects, not only are they dark and sinister, but their heavy life point costs reflects Mariks willingness to throw away lifepoints to power up Ra. As for Panik, I think you're right on nostalgia, and specifically, I think a LOT of credit should go to that song. The song does an amazing job of hyping Panik up and making him feel like the ultimate badass. Honestly, 4Kids music department doesn't get enough credit for practically CARRYING that company in the old days. I actually think it's really cool that he's a personal favourite of yours. It honestly reminds me of my very personal love of Scorpion as a Spiderman villain.@@CardHeroes

When I first heard Panik’s voice, I kinda thought he was voiced by an African-American voice actor. I mean I’m not pointing it out in a racial way but just hear me out: if any of you watch the back to back episodes of Yami Yugi dueling against Panik and if you ever hear Panik talk throughout the duel, one would think that his voice sounds like it’s from an African-American voice actor. Kinda like the famous MORTAL KOMBAT cry on the hit Mortal Kombat movie theme song. I mean I thought it was from an African-American voice yet I found out that it’s from an Anglo American voice. Not sure if anyone can understand what I’m saying but when it comes to hearing so many different voices through our favorite animated shows or video games, one doesn’t expect that they are voiced by different people of different backgrounds. Regardless, the true voice actor David Moo did an awesome job bringing Panik to life with his voice work.

Is it weird I was expecting Pegasus to be in this list? I mean, I know you elaborated why, but think about it for a sec and realize what Pegasus is as a character: A Tragic man who is willing to give away his very self if it means meeting the one he loves one more time, even going as far as to KILL people (I say Kill because, holy hell, Grandpa's soul got stolen, and the Manga makes it even more crazy w/ how Bandit Keith went out), as well as tapping into powers he may not understand, just to achieve such a goal. A man who plays coy and gives a false sense of hope, before snatching it away with either his Millennium eye to let him see any strategy his opponent may make, His toons that practically makes them near indestructible, or his Eyes Restrict cards by PHYSICALLY taking their wincon and using it against them, even letting those monsters get harmed and have their attacks be used without consent to their previous wielder. If you think about it, Pegasus is Horrifying.

@@Set2Seth I see Pegasus as someone who just misses the simple and innocent days of his childhood before the cruelty and harshness of the world made itself known to him by mercilessly taking the love of his life from him at such a young age. Deep down, he's really not all that malicious....he's just desperate and heartbroken, and that was warping and twisting him into someone that he really wasn't at his core (just look at Pegasus in GX, he's one of the most supportive, encouraging, and nicest characters around by the time GX starts). Losing to Yugi wound up being a wake-up call to Pegasus that made him realize that he was going down a dark and dangerous path, and that he was turning into someone that he wasn't and who Cecilia wouldn't approve of. In fact, I see Pegasus' original motivation for creating Duel Monsters to be his attempt to bring some much-needed cheer and fun into a cruel and callous world, in the hopes of making the world as a whole at least bit brighter. Besides, after Duelist Kingdom, Pegasus is generally shown to have shifted from a villain to more of a hero (or anti-hero/anti-villain) who is quite willing to lend a hand to Yugi and the others whenever they need it, at least on those rare occasions that he reappears.

BIG AGREE! I think he is called the Chop-man in the English run of the manga (I might be misremembering), but he was horrifying.
