Definitely a distinct period for him in that he was allowed to show more variety in his characterizations. I haven’t read any comments here, so I don’t know whether this has been said already. But for those of you who aren’t experienced with his seventies films, seeing Dog Day Afternoon should be a priority. The late, great director of that film said that he’d never witnessed a greater acting performance. Long before I ever knew that he thought that I’d already reached the place in my long, film-watching history that there was no greater performance I’d ever seen. It’s nothing short of a tour de force.
