Jane has been my personal inspiration for many decades. She inspired me to work out with the Jane Fonda Workout when it was just a book, followed by a record and then a video. Her voice talked me through the "I can't" and "I don't want to" just to hear her say "Don't you feel good?" at the end of the workout. Her praise was worth it. She taught me how the mental and emotional parts connect with the physical. She is simply my hero.

If you've ever heard of the classic gameshow "What's My Line?" it shows many of the Hollywood greats, and TV/movie stars of the 50s/60s. It's like a time capsule, seeing the stars of old...the people who set the tone for the industry to come, and Jane Fonda appeared many times on that show both as guest and a panelist. She looked great then, and still does now.

Jane's response was the more important point.
@kentGrey
@kentGrey Жыл бұрын
@@Poetic_Justice1962 They are talking about two different things. Being mad at the government (her point) is NOT an excuse to oppress others (his point). He said "So many people angry about how someone else is living their life", (not-neoliberalism) and she "they are mad because of the effects of Neoliberalism". Given that Neoliberalism refers to "market-oriented reform policies such as "eliminating price controls, deregulating capital markets, lowering trade barriers" and reducing, especially through privatization and austerity, state influence in the economy", it they are mad about that they're attacking people (Transexuals, women seeking abortions, etc) who had even less control over the effects of neoliberalism then they did. I'm not saying she's wrong, people often "kick the dog" when they are angry. Problem is, kicked dogs feel pain and suffer real harm! Karma doesn't care that your reason for "kicking" Bobbie is because Bill did things that harmed you. ALL the "neoliberals" are million- and billionaires, with judges and congress in their pockets. They are insulated from the hate that Conan is talking about. So for ME Conan makes the more important point. The people Jane is advocating for are less deserving of MY empathy because of their status as "oppressor". But of course each of us has the right to show empathy as we see fit.
@Poetic_Justice1962
@Poetic_Justice1962 Жыл бұрын
@@kentGrey You make many excellent points, but Jane just explained the causes of anger - neoliberalism, greed, political corruption, disenfranchisement -, which does not imply that she agrees with the way that this anger is misdirected at vulnerable and minority groups, which misplacement is exploited by political opportunists of the far right.
@kentGrey
@kentGrey Жыл бұрын
@@Poetic_Justice1962 I was not implying that she agrees with the way the anger is misdirected. That would be showing 'sympathy'. But she is empathetic to their pain; otherwise she would not have explained about neoliberalism in response to conan's negative judgement of their oppression of others. That said, my original comment was only regarding what Conan said. You felt her response was more important. I do not. That is what prompted me to type "each of us has the right to show empathy as we see fit".

It’s difficult to understand why people find her inspiring. I wonder if anyone even cares what she did to our soldiers and POW’s in Vietnam? She betrayed them and our country. She’s unrepentant. Nothing she says has any value to me.

She was vehemently against the Vietnam war and did a very ill-advised photo shoot in Hanoi which she later acknowledged was a mistake and apologized for. But her intention was to STOP sending American soldiers to die in a war we had no business being in, which is the opposite of your assertion. Being a patriot doesn't always mean agreeing with the things politicians do.

@@marccardiff Respectfully, You need to do more research. In front of the cameras, in the presence of the enemy, she said those American POW’s were war criminals and should be executed. She betrayed those men. Several of them passed her notes, thinking she would help. She gave the notes to the commanding officer of the North Vietnamese. She never apologized for what she said or did. She only apologized for sitting on the North Vietnamese gun. It’s one thing to oppose a war and criticize Presidents or political leaders. I agree, that is patriotic to hold them to account. It’s a completely different thing to allow yourself to be propaganda for the very men who are killing, torturing and wounding our soldiers, who were sent by their country to fight. Her actions greatly contributed to their suffering and the detestable attitude of the public toward those men when they arrived home. She isn’t inspiring. She betrayed those men and her country.

I like Jane Fonda. But the quote of "there would be no climate crisis if there was no racism" is one of the most vapid and ignorant things I've heard since this bizarre century began

not really that bizarre, it's a basic precept of intersectional theory that capitalism and racism are deeply intertwined, and this has been talked about by several activists/revolutionaries even before Fonda.
