I've been thinking a lot about this recently and Cranston really hit the nail on the head on this point. There's so much media out there that we don't have to settle for something that isn't quality or stimulating in some way because we can easily find something more relevant to our likes and curiosities and thus more entertaining.

The annoying thing about older TV was that what Conan said wasn't true. There were episodes where a character broke out of their stereotype and showed growth.. and then next week they were right back to their stereotype and completely forgot the lessons they learned in the last episode. At the beginning of every episode, everyone reverted to exactly who they were in the premier.

Seinfeld did this intentionally. They didn’t want any character devlopement. There is an episode where Elaine and Jerry get back together and then the next episode it’s like it never happened… and they had decided that it would be too altering to the characters.

MGM owns the rights and they'd certainly charge a licensing fee to use clips. Not that Conan couldn't afford it, but they probably don't want to set a precedent that they'll include clips of any show mentioned by the guests or Conan, else the show would be losing money. Those licenses aren't cheap.

Very good and true conversation. I’m 76 and grew up on that “formula” tv, (and left it behind). Even feature films have to spin the story in about 90 minutes, ok to a point, but along came HBO and say Deadwood, then the magnificent Breaking Bad, that is where the quality viewing really started. A minor incident in say episode 3 may turn up consequences in episode 6 in the next series, those are the plot challenges I really appreciate , it gives the shows so much more depth than the old tv or even today’s Hollywood theatre films. To me it’s all about $ risk, so much money to make a big film , Oh , we can’t afford to take any real risks, but these new tv series seem quite willing and as a result have come up with some absolute gems.

It took 50 years but people finally realized TV could do literary storytelling better than movies. A lot of classic novels were originally serialized in weekly publications in the 19th century than later all the chapters were published in a book.

@GritsAndEggsPod I think that's more due to the fact that the Rock can't really act beyond what he's done so far. Cranston doesn't have this problem. I'm sure you'd be hard pressed to find two of Cranston's characters that are as similar to each other as a lot of Rock's characters.
@DETHMOKIL
@DETHMOKIL Жыл бұрын
Stand alone episodes are cool option that still needs to exist. everything being so serialized makes these huge commitments to these giant 10 hour long movies that end up being canceled after season 1. The fact is that not every show has Breaking Bad level of premise so they stretch arcs out far to long with even longer gaps in between seasons. Condensing down simple plots into a single hour works well for higher paced productions. things are so crunched now that it takes years to spit out 8 episodes and who knows if you will even get a chance to finish properly.
@therokku7393

yeah but sadly that doesnt sell well nowadays, not at least in older audiences, all has to be morally grey bcs its more "mature", i dont mean that people are angels, but damn not everyone is borderline sociopath in how far they pursue their goals, its sad that some people thinks kids shows are dumb bcs "They are a flawed loving family, in reality you dont trust your own brother this is dumb", its really hard to find the balance between having complex characters and being kinda moral or having kinda common values, as a GenZ i have seen how there is even worship to villains now more than heroes, Patrick Bateman, Walter White, The Joker, etc. people say fiction is fiction but some people dont make the distinction, A movie with simple characters can sell really well, like Puss in Boots that was a succes, i think eventually we will go full circle and multi season series will be so exploited that people will return to simple things like Phineas and Ferb or go even more complex bcs you have to step up to new audiences.

There are always the front runners of a trend that set the stage for what follows. Breaking Bad wasn’t the first, but it was one of the first to do it exceedingly well AND connect into the culture on a deep level. We’re still early in this era of tv shows, but I can see it getting old fast because so many shows are either not good or instantly cancelled. I just want good stuff, I don’t care what form they take, and there are still good shows being made.

[unrelated to this particular video] Conan, I imagine you've heard occasionally that you should run for president. One reason I think you would (seriously) make a good president is your diplomatic and unifying skill. Being all over the world, able to communicate gracefully and humorously with officials from other cultures, is a rarity in the modern age. You've proven able to successfully run the "Conan Corporation," and you seem to be a peacemaker at heart; you want people to get along; and humor is your tool... As someone who's late millennial/early Gen Z age, I honestly have no idea what people my age want with entertainment. 90% of everything coming out these days is either some regurgitated retelling of a classic story that has nothing to do with the original source, or it's the next superhero movie that's been beaten to death for years now. My only demand is that the shows and movies feature interesting, original stories with a cast of actors/actresses who are passionate enough to nail the roles. Seems like every decent movie/show these days flies under the radar, while the crap nobody cares about makes all the headlines. It's only a matter of time before the current trend collapses.

Also, not only nowadays there are more entertainment options (i.e. quantity in the movies section), there are also new entertainment experiences which didn't exist before. Social media, producing content (which is entertaining by itself), hyperrealistic videogames in this world or other universes, haptics, VR, AR, and the list goes on. A person who has had all these experiences immediately knows that they are spending time doing 'x' while they could be doing 'y', 'z', 'r,', 'q', etc. I think the biggest accomplishment is to go mainstream, because it usually means its something universally liked, regardless of its form: Breaking Bad as a dark series, Malcolm as a comedy, Conan podcast, etc!.

If anyone wants proof that younger people demand more from their movies/shows, just look at the ridiculous number of video essays that pop up on KZbin whenever something new comes out. We’re the ones watching that stuff. I personally love to binge reactions/discussions/reviews on KZbin after finishing a show I really like because people will often have fun pieces of trivia that further extend the show and insights that I missed on my first watch.

@@THETRIVIALTHINGS if somebody has to ask that, then they've never seen a movie from those decades or the themes align with their world view, which would explain being outraged and triggered about a perceived change in filmmaking. Nearly every movie in those decades that featured war, espionage, foreign affairs, America as a foreign power, America as the military hero is an example. Hollywood has been the unofficial propaganda arm of the US since the 1940s. On the flip side, critically acclaimed movies like John Singleton's Boyz n the Hood (1991) transformed how black lives were portrayed on screen.
