Because it is funny! Lol! I didn't see it coming and that's a big part of it. The element of surprise is another. But the biggest part is that it's so simple. Put that all together and you have a fresh stew of giggles my friend. It's also a transition and it is very difficult to make a transition funny. It's also a secondary line and those always get me. You wouldn't see that line in the trailer if this was a movie either I laughed too, I didn't see it coming and now I'm stealing it :D

bashbrannigan I can't believe I never thought about it but yeah, he seems like an obvious choice. I mean, he comes from the same time as Billy Crystal and he could adapt his humor better to these times better than Crystal did back in 2012. However, my concern would be how much freedom they would give him because it seems like the academy nowadays sets a team of writers to write the jokes and the host is reduced to some puppet dancing and reading lines from the teleprompter, which seemed to be the issue with Neil Patrick Harris. Anyway, it would be a great opportunity to bring back Jiminy Glick too(probably not for the entire ceremony though, that might be a bit too much).

I love him. He will always be relavent to me but at this point in time I don't think most people find him relavent. When I say relevant I basically mean current and I think that's why he will not be hosting these days. I mean I think there definitely are young people who have no idea who he is. It's a pittty but I believe it to be true. The oscars aren't gonna hire people who don't appeal to young people.

Martin Short is most definitely one of the funniest, quickest comedians of our time! It doesn't matter how old he gets he remains so quick & nimble- mentally & physically. There's a series of clips available on YT of him and Conan in the latter's late night talk shows, all from the early 2000's. They did work well together at that time, so yeah I'm all for that too.
