Zorah Magdaros may be the bulkiest monster we've had thus far. Shame that the massive-scale turtle was more of a set piece and plot piece in World than a proper fight. Other than that, I think Dalamadur deserves a comeback as serpentine monsters of that scale really haven't been a thing in recent MH games as much.

The developers themselves once said in an interview that underwater in 3rd gen just took way too much development resources. Don't think just making the movesets work underwater; think about any movement, physics, mechanics, or orientation in the water at all. For the most part, underwater combat is mechanically closer to a second game than a feature. Also keep in mind they would not be able to use much from 3rd gen because new mh is incredibly different, far beyond what fans of the games understand. I'm sure they could make it fun, but would the tradeoff even be worth it? I'd guess probably not even close for most people.
@eandlbloodflower6765

Maybe a few generations in the consoles would allow underwater to return, if they will have enough assets to work with in order to lighten the development of ground fights. If they could develop it, it could probably be one of the main selling points of future MH games -- the inclusion of actual and good underwater combat in a game which is rarely, if ever, tackled.

Yeah but that was literally over a decade ago, and now they have a bigger, more experienced team, better tech to work with, and presumably a bigger budget allocated by Capcom's higher-ups on account on the success and growth of the franchise following the 5th gen.

They had limited success adding underwater combat in 3rd gen even with the relatively simple moveset weapons had back then. Making it work with the much more elaborate movesets weapons now have would take an absurd amount of work and there’s still the risk that it will again not be that fun. It’s just not worth it. I would like to see a return to underwater MH, but in a spinoff with its own mechanics and gear distinct from mainline MH.

I think Ahtal-ka has a chance to return in Sunbreak because although not related, there are two spider monsters there already, meaning the concept of using silk and web is already there, and it wouldn’t be too hard to implement, plus with how crazy Sunbreak is already, a giant bug with a giant mech doesn’t sound too crazy.

Theoretically I think they could reintroduce underwater combat. And I have an idea as to how they could do it, they could have us sink to the bottom with air tanks so we don’t drown the combat would be almost exactly like fighting ibushi and Narwa but with different monsters. It would still be one hell of a design ask

This is a very smart way to do it. I believe I have seen something like this in Runescape as well, so its a smart way to get around doing the insane amount of weapons animations. The other way they could do it would be basically to set up 1 monster hunter game on the current engine where they do underwater and incorporate all the animations at a limited roster, and then they could use that as their stepping stone and port a lot of the animations and stuff into future titles. Sort of how like Elden Ring has a lot of the same skeletons, boss types, and animations from the older games.

Semi Aquatic monsters: Capcom can make Boats a unique way to hunt then using boats similar to Jhen Mohran and Dahren Mohran, if there was a closed area like that with water on it and balissta and and a land and no Swimming mechanic then they will just force us to make use Balista and cannon until the monster comes out for a second phase or something like that.

siege fights over quick spamy monsters any day. i don't know if its because im a vet but when i finished rise, there was nothing to do other than doing all the quests and completing builds, i didnt feel like ive killed any gargantuan monsters that needed so much prep or just careful positioning and i didnt have motivation to help people online since hunts can be very quick. same thing happened in world where it was just mostly the same monsters in master rank but just beefed up (other than that one monster at the end of master rank). i still wish they did a dah mohran with magdaros where you fight him on foot and not just walk back and forth the entire time, occasionally mining rocks. the fact i have 450hrs in mh4u and i STILL havent finished that game because the single player quests are genuinely hard and I play with randos online to have the shit kicked out of us when we verse g-rank only monsters says something. bring back the big bois

They could go bigger but it would have to move water mechanics to land, ie flying or some sort of bad ass grappling hook system.

I don't know or care how. I just want them to bring back Laviente from Frontiers (or just monsters and unique gameplay from Frontiers and Online in general because it would suck for them to have to die with those games after they shut down in 2019).

I honestly think they're done with Ultra big monsters when people generally seem more receptive to the Huge monsters instead. Zorah Magdaros took a metric amount of time but Kulve'Taroth far eclipsed it in terms of enjoyment and engagement and even Xeno'Jivah i dare say was a more entertaining fight than Zorah. SunRise also seemed to be opt for the Huge fights instead with Narwa, Ibushi, Allmother and Gaismagorn who are, again far superior encounters than Zorah and didn't even try a Super Massive fight. Also whenever you read an article about Zorah Magadaros from the developers you can really get a sense that they feel Zorah was a massive mistake especially for how hard it was to make.

I've only played world so the largest monster I've fought is Zorah Magdaros which seems like the least fun fight of all the large monster :(

Dalamandur was just about as big, but it wasn't a gimmick fight. Outside of climbng the mountain just to get a drop attack, much the same way you did in Dark Souls 3 for the ancient wyvern. It wasn't a kill move though, just an easy damage phase. It was a standard hunt, against a very much not standard opponent. You couldn't even lock on to the whole thing, you would have to focus on its tail or face. You could also be a gangster and roll off the cliff and land on a platform right below its arm, and basically camp his armpit. Never managed to do enough damage solo before running out of time.

My hope fr a future title with water combat: A fatalis Sea Serpent, tha you fight deep underwater, In the abyss of a giant serpent corpse. The cavern is full of Bioluminescence moss, and The Fatal is has very few limbs, and the wings are large fins. The eyes glow Deep Blue.

Honestly, I wouldn't count Dire Miralis out so soon. We've seen the return of two of its fellows among the Black Dragon Club, Alatreon and regular Fatalis, so never say never when it comes to the angry volcano dragon. Hell, they could even show him walking out of the water as a homage to where it was first met. :p

i want a lot of things from MH g6, but one of the things i absolutely want is it to be insanely big but also highly reactive. zola was super large. but it didn't feel large. and it being pretty slow and bing chilling made its size really not that cool. i would definetely love a long snake like look but with also really coiling design where it maybe coils it's really long limbs to "Concentrate" it's strength and giving up it's long reach. i guess something that has Ahtal-Ka mechanics but also dalamadur designs and yama tsukumi designs

Also including all features like under water fights, fights on the Sand etc.. i know that its a lot of work for devs, but it would be Amazing to go through Evry mh in one Big Big game, it would be so much hours of hunts, so much pleasur to play

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice has an interesting underwater area that features smaller enemy types and a mini-boss fight. I enjoyed it but imo it wasn't fun as the rest of the Sekiro combat. I think MH would be fine without underwater fights until they find a way to seamlessly blend it into the more common gameplay loop

For the atahl ka, i am thinking that you are wrong. In fact we know that its meca is not fully built like 50% only and that it takes the form of the strongest monster the athal ka have seen so in future games like wild we could have another one with a unique meca with it

i think under water combat done right would be extremely cool, if they kept alot of the larger scale monster attacks and maybe different monster movesets in water and on land and the player could have a fast movement push/swim under water would make under water combat fast pace and fun and if they made it so monsters and players could move from land to water at will and make it a seamless fighting experience it would be awesome doing this would be very hard but i think it would be a huge step if they managed to pull it off
